Summary Electrochemical initiation of cationic polymerization of heterocyclic and vinyl monomers such as cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and butyl vinylether (BVE), respectively at low potentials in the presence of allylic salts namely, allyl-thiophenium (AT), allyl-triphenyl phosphonium (APP), allyl-isoquinolinium (AIQ), allyl-pyridinium (AP) and allyl-dimethyl anilinium salts, was investigated. The mechanism of this polymerization was studied using cyclic voltammetry and by electropolymerization experiments performed in undivided and H-type cells. A mechanism involving addition-fragmentation decomposition of allylic salts by free radical species formed by electrolysis of trace amounts of water present in the system is postulated. The purpose was to investigate the surface characteristics of various resin-based materials by immersing in probiotic beverages. A total of 420 disc-shaped samples (5 mm × 2 mm) were prepared from resin-based composites. Samples were divided into four groups and immersed for 10 min/day for 1 month in either a probiotic sachet, kefir, kombucha, or artificial saliva (control). Surface roughness was measured at baseline and 1 month. One sample of each of the tested materials was examined under nanoindentation to evaluate the reduced elasticity modulus and nanohardness scores. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to compare surface differences. Data were analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA test and the significance was set at p < .05. The lowest roughness scores were observed in Z250, Estelite Bulk Fill, and HRi ENA in most of the test groups. Among conventional composites, Z250 group had the highest nanohardness and elasticity modulus scores. Among bulk-fill composites, Estelite Bulk Fill Flow had the lowest surface roughness after immersion in probiotic beverages and the highest nanohardness values. Reveal HD, as a bulk-fill group showed higher surface roughness and considerably lower nanohardness and elasticity modulus scores. Maximum height levels of samples were recorded. SEM images revealed voids and microcracks on the surfaces of test materials. Dentists may prefer Z250 as microhybrid and Estelite Bulk Fill Flow as bulk-fill composites for the restorations of patients who consume gut-friendly drinks regularly. When there are various types of materials, nanoindentation is a useful method for evaluating surface alterations and sensible comparisons.  相似文献

Lithium triborate (LiB3O5) was synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction method, and then rare earth oxides were doped into LiB3O5 to enhance its thermoluminescent (TL) properties. The identification and characteristics of the obtained compounds were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses, differential thermal analyses (DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The glow curves were obtained using a thermoluminescent (TL) reader. The results revealed that all the rare earth oxides were not good activators for lithium triborate and the obtained compounds could not be used for dosimetric applications.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop drug delivery system of doxycycline‐loaded polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres. The investigated microsphere formulation can be considered for local application in bone infections and degenerative joint diseases, which generally require long‐term treatments via systemic drugs. PCL‐14 kDa and 65 kDa were used in microsphere preparation. Before release, the microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mean particle size of microspheres was in the range of 74–122 µm and their drug loadings ranged between 10 and 30%. In vitro release profiles were described using the Higuchi and the Korsmeyer–Peppas equations. Diffusion model was applied to experimental data for estimating diffusion coefficients of microspheres; calculated as between 4.5 × 10?10 and 9.5 × 10?10 cm2/s. Although long‐term release from microspheres of PCL‐14 kDa obeyed diffusion model, PCL‐65 kDa microspheres showed this tendency only for some period. Modeling studies showed that the drug release mechanism was mainly dependent on loading and molecular weight differences. Release behavior of PCL‐65 kDa microspheres, however, might be better represented by derivation of a different equation to model for the total release period. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A sub-band decomposition filter bank can be recursively used in a tree structure to divide the frequency domain into various subfrequency bands. The frequency bands of the sub-band signals have a counter intuitive order in such a decomposition. Alkannin is a potent pharmaceutical substance with a wide spectrum of biological activities. In the scope of this study, supercritical CO2 extraction and sonication with hexane were applied to various Alkanna species, which were then subjected to hydrolysis. Total alkannins were quantified by HPLC/DAD and incorporated into yoghurt. Viscosities, pH values and microbial analyses were reported at 7 days of intervals for 21 days of storage. A. tinctoria possessed the highest amounts of alkannins and total phenols (686.3 mg GAE/g extract). The results revealed no significant changes in pH values (4.1–4.0), viable counts of Streptococcus salivarius ssp. thermophilus (80–150 × 106 cfu g−1) and slightly lower viscosities of enriched yoghurts (8,250–6,750 cPs) compared with the control (4.15–4.0; 110–105 × 106 cfu g−1; 12,600–11,310 cPs) during storage. However, viable counts of Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus of enriched yoghurts (87 × 103 cfu g−1) were much better than the control (191 × 103 cfu g−1), indicating a significant decrease in post acidification and generation of bitter peptides. Among the species investigated, A. tinctoria is the most promising source, obtained at higher yields via supercritical fluid extraction technology as a green alternative to solvent extraction and thus can be utilized at industrial scale in order to develop yoghurt products with improved health benefits.  相似文献

Content-based microscopic image retrieval system for multi-image queries   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this paper, we describe the design and development of a multitiered content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system for microscopic images utilizing a reference database that contains images of more than one disease. The proposed CBIR system uses a multitiered approach to classify and retrieve microscopic images involving their specific subtypes, which are mostly difficult to discriminate and classify. This system enables both multi-image query and slide-level image retrieval in order to protect the semantic consistency among the retrieved images. New weighting terms, inspired from information retrieval theory, are defined for multiple-image query and retrieval. The performance of the system was tested on a dataset including 1666 imaged high power fields extracted from 57 follicular lymphoma (FL) tissue slides with three subtypes and 44 neuroblastoma (NB) tissue slides with four subtypes. Each slide is semantically annotated according to their subtypes by expert pathologists. By using leave-one-slide out testing scheme, the multi-image query algorithm with the proposed weighting strategy achieves about 93% and 86% of average classification accuracy at the first rank retrieval, outperforming the image-level retrieval accuracy by about 38 and 26 percentage points, for FL and NB diseases, respectively.  相似文献

Image segmentation is a very important step in the computerized analysis of digital images. The maxflow mincut approach has been successfully used to obtain minimum energy segmentations of images in many fields. Classical algorithms for maxflow in networks do not directly lend themselves to efficient parallel implementations on contemporary parallel processors. We present the results of an implementation of Goldberg–Tarjan preflow‐push algorithm on the Cray XMT‐2 massively multithreaded supercomputer. This machine has hardware support for 128 threads in each physical processor, a uniformly accessible shared memory of up to 4 TB and hardware synchronization for each 64 bit word. It is thus well‐suited to the parallelization of graph theoretic algorithms, such as preflow‐push. We describe the implementation of the preflow‐push code on the XMT‐2 and present the results of timing experiments on a series of synthetically generated as well as real images. Our results indicate very good performance on large images and pave the way for practical applications of this machine architecture for image analysis in a production setting. In the diagnosis of preinvasive breast cancer, some of the intraductal proliferations pose a special challenge. The continuum of intraductal breast lesions includes the usual ductal hyperplasia (UDH), atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The current standard of care is to perform percutaneous needle biopsies for diagnosis of palpable and image-detected breast abnormalities. UDH is considered benign and patients diagnosed UDH undergo routine follow-up, whereas ADH and DCIS are considered actionable and patients diagnosed with these two subtypes get additional surgical procedures. About 250,000 new cases of intraductal breast lesions are diagnosed every year. A conservative estimate would suggest that at least 50% of these patients are needlessly undergoing unnecessary surgeries. Thus, improvement in the diagnostic reproducibility and accuracy is critically important for effective clinical management of these patients. In this study, a prototype system for automatically classifying breast microscopic tissues to distinguish between UDH and actionable subtypes (ADH and DCIS) is introduced. This system automatically evaluates digitized slides of tissues for certain cytological criteria and classifies the tissues based on the quantitative features derived from the images. The system is trained using a total of 327 regions of interest (ROIs) collected across 62 patient cases and tested with a sequestered set of 149 ROIs collected across 33 patient cases. An overall accuracy of 87.9% is achieved on the entire test data. The test accuracy of 84.6% is obtained with borderline cases (26 of the 33 test cases) only, when compared against the diagnostic accuracies of nine pathologists on the same set (81.2% average), indicates that the system is highly competitive with the expert pathologists as a stand-alone diagnostic tool and has a great potential in improving diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility when used as a "second reader" in conjunction with the pathologists.  相似文献
