We provide the complete record of methodology that let us evolve BrilliAnt, the winner of the Ant Wars contest. Ant Wars contestants are virtual ants collecting food on a grid board in the presence of a competing ant. BrilliAnt has been evolved through a competitive one-population coevolution using genetic programming and fitnessless selection. In this paper, we detail the evolutionary setup that lead to BrilliAnt’s emergence, assess its direct and indirect human-competitiveness, and describe the behavioral patterns observed in its strategy.

Self-assembly can easily produce intricate structures that would be difficult to make by conventional fabrication means. Here, self-assembly is used to prepare multicomponent polymeric microspheres of arbitrary internal symmetries. Droplets of liquid prepolymers are printed onto a water-soluble hydrogel, and are allowed to spread and coalesce into composite patches. These patches are then immersed in an isodense liquid, which both compensates the force of gravity and dissolves the gel beneath the polymers. Subsequently, the patches fold into spheres whose internal structures are dictated by the arrangement of the droplets printed onto the surface. The spheres can be solidified either thermally or by ultraviolet radiation. We present a theoretical analysis of droplet spreading, coalescence and folding. Conditions for the stability of the folded microspheres are derived from linear stability analysis. The composite microbeads that we describe are likely to find uses in optics, colloidal self-assembly and controlled-delivery applications.  相似文献

Retinal lipofuscin accumulates with age in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), where its fluorescence properties are used to assess retinal health. It was observed that there is a decrease in lipofuscin fluorescence above the age of 75 years and in the early stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the response of lipofuscin isolated from human RPE and lipofuscin-laden cells to visible light, and to determine whether an abundant component of lipofuscin, docosahexaenoate (DHA), can contribute to lipofuscin fluorescence upon oxidation. Exposure of lipofuscin to visible light leads to a decrease in its long-wavelength fluorescence at about 610 nm, with a concomitant increase in the short-wavelength fluorescence. The emission spectrum of photodegraded lipofuscin exhibits similarity with that of oxidized DHA. Exposure of lipofuscin-laden cells to light leads to a loss of lipofuscin granules from cells, while retaining cell viability. The spectral changes in fluorescence in lipofuscin-laden cells resemble those seen during photodegradation of isolated lipofuscin. Our results demonstrate that fluorescence emission spectra, together with quantitation of the intensity of long-wavelength fluorescence, can serve as a marker useful for lipofuscin quantification and for monitoring its oxidation, and hence useful for screening the retina for increased oxidative damage and early AMD-related changes.  相似文献

Background: Gestagens are the most widely used therapy in anestrus type II. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaginal progesterone inserts therapy in anestrus type II in cows. Methods: The study was conducted on 33 cows. Progesterone (PR) and estrogen (ER) receptors expression in endometrium was assessed on a molecular level based on mRNA tissue expression. Additionally, blood 17ß-estradiol and progesterone levels were evaluated. Results: A decrease in mRNA expression of A and B PR and ER α was noted in treated and untreated animals. In the treated group, an increase of ERß mRNA expression was observed, while a decreased was found in untreated animals. There was increased PR, ERα and ß expression in endometrial tissue in treated cows, and decreased expression of these factors in untreated cows. In the treated group, recurrence of ovarian cyclicity was noted in 52% of animals and pregnancy was obtained in 34.8% of them, while in the untreated group, recurrence did not occur. In the control group, spontaneous recurrence of ovarian cyclicity was not observed. An increase of PR expression was correlated with increased proliferation of endometrial cells. Conclusions: It seems likely that the endometrium is well developed and ready for placentation after removing the exogenous source of progesterone and preventing the recurrence of cyclicity of ovaries.  相似文献

This paper presents an event routing service (ERS) that represents a pattern for the establishment and processing of lightweight sessions between a source and a destination of events. It is based on the CORBA notification service. To illustrate the features of the proposed service, its application in computer telephony is discussed in detail. Most of the positive features of the ERS are inherited from the CORBA notification service, but its implementation requires a novel protocol describing the lightweight session establishment mechanism. The implementation of ERS is described and its application to routing events in a computer telephony system is presented. The paper concludes with a performance measurement study. This paper begins with a survey of both passive and active microfluidic mixers that have been implemented in recent years. It then describes a micromixing device based on dynamic self-assembly. This device is easy to fabricate and has excellent working characteristics in the continuous-flow mode. Electrical resistivities of two icosahedral (I) Al-Pd-Re alloys have been measured between room temperature and mK temperatures. One quasicrystalline (QC) polygrain Al-Pd-Re sample exhibited insulating behavior in its resistivities, increasing by a factor of r=R(4 K)/R(300 K)=7.76; its room temperature resistivity was 9,890 μΩ cm. A “phenomenological” expression fitted the conductivity data well between 300 K to 0.5 K. Below 0.4 K a crossover to an activated variable-range hopping law was observed. Low temperature magnetoresistance ratio data and fits using the wave function shrinkage theory are presented. A second QC Al-Pd-Re sample had a small resistance temperature ratio r=2.12. The room temperature resistivity was extremely large, ρ(300 K)≈40,980 μΩ cm. Its conductivity could be described well using a simple temperature power law between 300 K to 20 K. Below 20 K there was a crossover to a new behavior. Below 1 K, the conductivity could be fitted using a very weakly insulating power law where σ(T)≈11.37T 0.032 in (Ω cm)−1, suggesting that this sample is located just below the metal-insulator transition. The magnetoconductivity data could not be fitted successfully using the 3D weak localization (WL) theory and inserting into it physical and realistic fitting magnitudes for the inelastic magnetic field B in.   相似文献

The view established in EU Member States assumes that the level of personal data protection in EU Member States (and the EU as such) is much higher than that provided by the US legal system. This assumption will (presumably) find its validation in relation to the US federal law. However, many of the solutions found at the state level in the US are only now being introduced into the EU system (and that of the EU Member States). The article highlights that such established views (or stereotypes) can be unfounded (and may lead to even more unsubstantiated conclusions).  相似文献

Liquid ethanol introduced as microdroplets into the tip of microwave nitrogen plasma, operating at 2.45 GHz under atmospheric pressure, has been investigated. Injection of ethanol outside the region of plasma generation eliminated a problem of soot formation at that region, which was responsible for short reactor lifetime. Using liquid ethanol allows to save energy needed for vaporization. Hydrogen, carbon monoxide and solid carbon were the main outlet products. Other products detected with gas chromatography were CH4, C2H4 and C2H2. The best results concerning hydrogen production were as follows: concentration in the outlet gas up to 28%, production rate up to 1043 L/h, energy yield up to 209 L per kWh of microwave power, and were obtained for liquid C2H5OH flow rate of 3.7 L/h. A numerical 0D model was used to determine contributions of chemical reactions in formation of measured gaseous products. Simplified model involving only radical reactions without any ions and electrons predicts final concentrations of main compounds quite well for microwave power up to 4 kW.  相似文献
