Five years ago, Lane Hughston showed that some of the symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures (SICs) in dimension 3 coincide with the Hesse configuration (a structure well known to algebraic geometers, which arises from the torsion points of a certain elliptic curve). This connection with elliptic curves is signalled by the presence of linear dependencies among the SIC vectors. Here we look for analogous connections between SICs and algebraic geometry by performing computer searches for linear dependencies in higher dimensional SICs. We prove that linear dependencies will always emerge in Weyl–Heisenberg orbits when the fiducial vector lies in a certain subspace of an order 3 unitary matrix. This includes SICs when the dimension is divisible by 3 or equal to 8 mod 9. We examine the linear dependencies in dimension 6 in detail and show that smaller dimensional SICs are contained within this structure, potentially impacting the SIC existence problem. We extend our results to look for linear dependencies in orbits when the fiducial vector lies in an eigenspace of other elements of the Clifford group that are not order 3. Finally, we align our work with recent studies on representations of the Clifford group.  相似文献

The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a model for how animals sense, discriminate, and respond to chemical signals. However, with D. melanogaster our knowledge of the behavioral activity of olfactory receptor ligands has relied largely on close-range attraction, rather than on long-range orientation behavior. We developed a flight assay to relate chemosensory perception to behavior. Headspace volatiles from vinegar attracted 62% of assayed flies during a 15-min experimental period. Flies responded irrespective of age, sex, and mating state, provided they had been starved. To identify behaviorally relevant chemicals from vinegar, we compared the responses to vinegar and synthetic chemicals. Stimuli were applied by a piezoelectric sprayer at known and constant release rates. Re-vaporized methanol extracts of Super Q-trapped vinegar volatiles attracted as many flies as vinegar. The main volatile component of vinegar, acetic acid, elicited significant attraction as a single compound. Two other vinegar volatiles, 2-phenyl ethanol and acetoin, produced a synergistic effect when added to acetic acid. Geosmin, a microbiological off-flavor, diminished attraction to vinegar. This wind tunnel assay based on a conspicuous and unambiguous behavioral response provides the necessary resolution for the investigation of physiologically and ecologically relevant odors and will become an essential tool for the functional analysis of the D. melanogaster olfactory system.  相似文献

This paper presents a complete mathematical model of a Moving Bed biofilm process for waste-water treatment, in particular for the nitrification process. The model is based on a bottom up approach adopting a multidimensional model for the biofilm growth and metabolism and a global mass balance model for the whole reactor. The model shows that oxygen is limiting the amount of biomass involved in the nitrification process. Furthermore, it suggests the existence of an optimal amount biomass for an optimal reactor turnover rate. Studies of two specific new suspended carriers show that the model output is dependable on the geometry of the carrier, and to a satisfactory extent agreeable with measurements.  相似文献

Adults of the sorghum chafer, Pachnoda interrupta Olivier (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae), form aggregations during the mating period in July, but also in October. The beetles aggregate on food sources, e.g., Acacia spp. trees or sorghum with ripe seeds, to feed and mate. During the mating season, field trapping experiments with live beetles as bait demonstrated attraction of males to unmated females, but not to mated females or males, indicating the presence of a female-emitted sex pheromone. Unmated females combined with banana (food source) attracted significantly more males and females than did unmated females alone. Other combinations of beetles with banana were not more attractive than banana alone. Thus, aggregation behavior appears to be guided by a combination of pheromone and host volatiles. Females and males were extracted with hexane during the mating period, and the extracts were compared by using GC-MS. In a field trapping experiment, 19 compounds found only in females were tested, both singly and in a mixture. Traps baited with one of the female-associated compounds, phenylacetaldehyde, caught significantly more beetles than any other treatment. However, the sex ratio of beetles caught in these traps did not differ from that of control traps, and it is possible that other components may be involved in the sex pheromone signal. Furthermore, traps baited with a mixture of all 19 compounds attracted significantly fewer beetles than did phenylacetaldehyde alone.  相似文献

This report investigates the low-temperature bed drying of biomass particles for use in a gasification process. Experimental drying equipment capable of drying up to 0.25 m3 of biomass batchwise was constructed. The experimental result indicates that the drying equipment and applied method are appropriate to evaluate different drying parameters and their influence on the drying course. Drying parameters such as air temperature, air velocity, bed height, and type of wood are studied regarding the drying rate, final moisture content in the material, and bed pressure drop. The constant-rate and falling-rate drying period are studied to obtain an energy efficient drying process. Measurements show that the drying zone (where the actual drying occurs) progresses irregularly through the bed.  相似文献

Background

Air pollution, mainly from combustion, is one of the leading global health risk factors. A susceptible group is the more than 200 million people worldwide suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). There are few data on lung deposition of airborne particles in patients with COPD and none for combustion particles.

Objectives

To determine respiratory tract deposition of diesel combustion particles in patients with COPD during spontaneous breathing.

Methods

Ten COPD patients and seven healthy subjects inhaled diesel exhaust particles generated during idling and transient driving in an exposure chamber. The respiratory tract deposition of the particles was measured in the size range 10?C500?nm during spontaneous breathing.

Results

The deposited dose rate increased with increasing severity of the disease. However, the deposition probability of the ultrafine combustion particles (< 100?nm) was decreased in COPD patients. The deposition probability was associated with both breathing parameters and lung function, but could be predicted only based on lung function.

Conclusions

The higher deposited dose rate of inhaled air pollution particles in COPD patients may be one of the factors contributing to their increased vulnerability. The strong correlations between lung function and particle deposition, especially in the size range of 20?C30?nm, suggest that altered particle deposition could be used as an indicator respiratory disease.  相似文献

The analog switching mode in ferroelectric liquid crystals, sometimes referred to as 'V-shaped switching,' has, thanks to its submillisecond switching capability, attracted much interest for future fast electro-optic displays where it is to be used for amplitude modulation. We have studied this mode for analog phase-only modulation. As V-shaped switching is based on a conical motion of the index ellipsoid this presents a challenging problem since both the orientation of the slow and fast axes, as well as the amount of birefringence varies in the switching process. We show theoretically, partly by means of Poincaré sphere analysis, that it is in fact possible to obtain near-lossless analog phase modulation between zero and pi radians in an ideal V-shaped switching cell through careful tuning of the polarization state of the input light. Furthermore, we were able to demonstrate this experimentally in a fabricated cell. Although this cell deviated slightly from the ideal conditions, e.g., the tilt cone half-angle was 38 degrees instead of the desired 45 degrees , we still obtained a continuous phase modulation between zero and 0.78pi rad with less than 2% modulation of the amplitude; the measured values agree very well with our numerical simulations of the real device.  相似文献

We propose a method to narrow the gap between the rigorous methods for the propagation of partially coherent light, which require excessive computational capacity, and the numerical methods used in practical engineering applications, where it is not clear how to handle spatial and temporal coherence in a statistically correct manner. As is the case for the latter methods, the numerical method described can deal with fields with a large spatial and temporal extent, which is necessary in practical applications such as laser fusion or optical lithography. However, the method also takes a few steps toward a more rigorous, yet efficient, representation of the optical field, which depends on detailed specified coherence properties of the radiation. The described method uses a set of independent monochromatic fields at different oscillation frequencies. The frequencies are chosen such that the statistical properties of the integrated intensity closely resemble those from a full-time trace treatment. Finally, we demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of the method with a few numerical examples of the propagation of a large field with a specified spatial and temporal coherence.  相似文献

The effects of growth hormone (GH) treatment on 24-h energy expenditure (EE) were studied in a open trial over a period of 4 weeks. Five subjects, four men and one woman, with a history of complete GH deficiency were included. All the subjects were examined on 2 consecutive days on baseline and, thereafter, at six occasions during a period of 1 month (days 1, 2, 5, 8, 15, and 30). The dose of GH was 0.25 U/kg.week, administered sc once a day in the evening. EE was determined in a chamber for indirect calorimetry. Body composition was determined with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography using a four-scan technique. Blood samples were examined using well-established RIAs. During the first 2 weeks, 24-h EE increased by 6 +/- 3% (range 1-8%) from 40.9 +/- 4.8 to 42.9 +/- 4.8 kcal/24 h.kg (P < 0.05), sleeping metabolic rate by 14 +/- 3% (range 10-18%) from 28.4 +/- 1.9 to 32.9 +/- 2.2 kcal/24h.kg (P < 0.001), and basal metabolic rate by 11 +/- 7% (range 0-18%) from 29.6 +/- 2.4 to 33.3 +/- 2.6 kcal/24h.kg (P < 0.05). No change was found in daytime EE. The increase in EE covaried with changes in insulin-like growth factor 1, the free T3/free T4 ratio, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3, and the aminoterminal procollagen III peptide but not with changes in body composition. It is suggested that the stimulating effect of GH on EE occurs gradually during a 2-week period and is only detectable during night and morning hours, when significant levels of GH occur.  相似文献
