The tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a devastating pest of cultivated tomato Solanum lycopersicum throughout South and Central America and Europe. We aimed to characterize the behavioral mechanisms and the chemical cues
involved in host selection of T. absoluta females by chemical analysis of tomato leaf volatiles, wind tunnel attraction assays, and oviposition bioassays. Tomato leaf
odor elicited in mated females upwind orientation flight followed by landing as well as egg-laying, demonstrating the essential
role of plant volatiles in T. absoluta host-finding behavior. In wind tunnel and oviposition choice experiments, T. absoluta females significantly preferred tomato S. lycopersicum over wild tomato Solanum habrochaites, which is resistant to larval feeding. This indicates that leaf volatiles provide information on the suitability of plants
as larval hosts. Mated females also discriminated three cultivars of S. lycopersicum according to their volatile profiles. Headspace collections from leaves of these three cultivars contained large amounts
of β-phellandrene, followed by limonene, 2-carene, and (E)-β-caryophyllene, which together accounted for more than 70% of tomato foliage headspace. Most leaf volatiles were released
by all three cultivars, but they showed significant differences with respect to the presence of a few minor compounds and

Background
Air pollution, mainly from combustion, is one of the leading global health risk factors. A susceptible group is the more than 200 million people worldwide suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). There are few data on lung deposition of airborne particles in patients with COPD and none for combustion particles.Objectives
To determine respiratory tract deposition of diesel combustion particles in patients with COPD during spontaneous breathing.Methods
Ten COPD patients and seven healthy subjects inhaled diesel exhaust particles generated during idling and transient driving in an exposure chamber. The respiratory tract deposition of the particles was measured in the size range 10?C500?nm during spontaneous breathing.Results
The deposited dose rate increased with increasing severity of the disease. However, the deposition probability of the ultrafine combustion particles (< 100?nm) was decreased in COPD patients. The deposition probability was associated with both breathing parameters and lung function, but could be predicted only based on lung function.Conclusions
The higher deposited dose rate of inhaled air pollution particles in COPD patients may be one of the factors contributing to their increased vulnerability. We propose a method to narrow the gap between the rigorous methods for the propagation of partially coherent light, which require excessive computational capacity, and the numerical methods used in practical engineering applications, where it is not clear how to handle spatial and temporal coherence in a statistically correct manner. As is the case for the latter methods, the numerical method described can deal with fields with a large spatial and temporal extent, which is necessary in practical applications such as laser fusion or optical lithography. However, the method also takes a few steps toward a more rigorous, yet efficient, representation of the optical field, which depends on detailed specified coherence properties of the radiation. The described method uses a set of independent monochromatic fields at different oscillation frequencies. The frequencies are chosen such that the statistical properties of the integrated intensity closely resemble those from a full-time trace treatment. Finally, we demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of the method with a few numerical examples of the propagation of a large field with a specified spatial and temporal coherence. 相似文献

The analog switching mode in ferroelectric liquid crystals, sometimes referred to as 'V-shaped switching,' has, thanks to its submillisecond switching capability, attracted much interest for future fast electro-optic displays where it is to be used for amplitude modulation. We have studied this mode for analog phase-only modulation. As V-shaped switching is based on a conical motion of the index ellipsoid this presents a challenging problem since both the orientation of the slow and fast axes, as well as the amount of birefringence varies in the switching process. We show theoretically, partly by means of Poincaré sphere analysis, that it is in fact possible to obtain near-lossless analog phase modulation between zero and pi radians in an ideal V-shaped switching cell through careful tuning of the polarization state of the input light. Furthermore, we were able to demonstrate this experimentally in a fabricated cell. Although this cell deviated slightly from the ideal conditions, e.g., the tilt cone half-angle was 38 degrees instead of the desired 45 degrees , we still obtained a continuous phase modulation between zero and 0.78pi rad with less than 2% modulation of the amplitude; the measured values agree very well with our numerical simulations of the real device. 相似文献

Single-shot thermometry with dual-broadband rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy that employs amplified spontaneous emission from a broadband modeless dye laser has been examined. Evaluation of single-shot spectra of air, N2, and O2 showed an improved temperature precision at room temperature compared with the precision obtained with a conventional dye laser. A comparison was also made between the use of single-mode and multimode Nd:YAG lasers as sources for narrowband radiation, and in all cases the single-mode Nd:YAG laser resulted in higher precision. The detection of contamination such as salt in outdoor high-voltage insulator systems and its subsequent removal are vital for a reliable transmission of electric power. Remote detection of salt on a copper metal surface was carried out by using a mobile laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) Lidar system with a laser wavelength of 355 nm. Detection of salt on a polymeric high-voltage insulator was obtained when an additional lens was inserted into the beam path, and the number of photons that was detected could be calculated by using a calibrated white light source. Ablative cleaning could readily be carried out with LIBS and was verified by observing the disappearance of the sodium D-line emission. 相似文献
