Detection of ammonia by photoacoustic spectroscopy with semiconductor lasers

Sensitive photoacoustic detection of ammonia with near-infrared diode lasers (1.53 microns) and a novel differential acoustic resonator is described; a sensitivity of 0.2 parts per million volume (signal-to-noise ratio = 1) is attained. To eliminate adsorption-desorption processes of the polar NH3 molecules, a relatively high gas flow of 300 SCCM was used for the ammonia-nitrogen mixture. The results are compared with recent ammonia measurements with a NIR diode and absorption spectroscopy used for detection and photoacoustic experiments performed with an infrared quantum-cascade laser. The performance of the much simpler and more compact setup introduced here was comparable with these previous state-of-the-art measurements.     

Age-related variation in the influences of aging stereotypes on memory in adulthood.

Adults 24-86 years of age read positive or negative information about aging and memory prior to a memory test. The impact of this information on recall performance varied with age. Performance in the youngest and oldest participants was minimally affected by stereotype activation. Adults in their 60s exhibited weak effects consistent with the operation of stereotype threat, whereas middle-age adults exhibited a contrast effect in memory performance, suggestive of stereotype lift. Beliefs about aging and memory were also affected by stereotypic information, and older adults' changed beliefs were more important in predicting performance than was exposure to stereotype-based information alone. Double‐Inverse‐Opal Photonic Crystals: The Route to Photonic Bandgap Switching

Photonic crystals with a complete bandgap can stop the propagation of light of a certain frequency in all directions. We introduce double‐inverse‐opal photonic crystals (DIOPCs) as a new kind of optical switch. In the DIOPC, a movable, weakly scattering sphere is embedded within each pore of the inverse‐opal photonic crystal lattice. Switching between a diffusive reflector and a photonic crystal environment is experimentally demonstrated. Theory shows that a complete bandgap can be realized that can be opened or closed by moving the spheres. This functionality opens up new possibilities for the control of light emission and propagation. The close link and interaction between the chemical synthesis and the computational design and analysis underlines the interdisciplinary focus of this report.     

A middleware infrastructure for active spaces

The paper discusses the Gaia metaoperating system which extends the reach of traditional operating systems to manage ubiquitous computing habitats and living spaces as integrated programmable environments. Gaia exports services to query, access, and use existing resources and context, and provides a framework to develop user-centric, resource-aware, multidevice, context-sensitive, and mobile applications.     

Transit-time flow measurement for detection of early graft failure during myocardial revascularization

BACKGROUND: A low-flow situation in arterial and venous grafts has been associated with high rates of perioperative infarction and mortality. This study was designed to look at intraoperative graft flow and resistance in patients with coronary artery disease. METHODS: Coronary artery bypass graft flow was measured in 46 patients. Transit-time flow was used for coronary flow measurements at rest as well as after maximal vasodilation with adenosine infusion. RESULTS: Forty-three of the 46 patients showed normal internal mammary artery graft flow (>20 mL/min); 3 patients had no or minimal graft flow. Redoing the graft anastomosis in these 3 patients resulted in normalization of graft flow. The mean flow increased significantly after correction from 0.5 +/- 0.7 mL/min to 15.7 +/- 9.6 mL/min (p < 0.02). Conversely, vascular resistance decreased significantly from 138 +/- 10 to 4.8 +/- 1.8 Ohmv (p < 0.0001), as did the pulsatility index (from 146.9 +/- 95.7 to 3.4 +/- 1.8; p < 0.001). After correction, coronary flow reserve was 2.5 +/- 1.1. CONCLUSIONS: Measurements of intraoperative flow and resistance as well as derived variables allow assessment of early graft function and thus help prevent graft failure and reduce perioperative infarction. Transit-time volume flow might be a simple tool for quality control in coronary bypass procedures.     

Psychopathology in young adults with congenital heart disease. Follow-up results

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit constitutive (COX-1) and induced cyclooxygenase (COX-2), blocking prostaglandin production. We have compared the effects on nociceptive reflexes of meloxicam, which is COX-2 selective, with indomethacin, which is non-selective, using an in vitro spinal cord preparation. Cords were taken from naive rats, and from rats with carrageenan-induced hyperalgesia of one hindpaw. Reflex thresholds were lower in carrageenan preparations. Superfusion with meloxicam (10-100 microM) dose-dependently inhibited baseline reflexes and wind-up in normal and carrageenan preparations, whereas indomethacin (100-300 microM) had no effect. Thus meloxicam inhibits spinal reflexes, whereas indomethacin does not, despite its high affinity for both COX isoforms. We conclude that meloxicam has spinal antinociceptive actions which cannot be explained by the current concept of COX inhibition.     

Alloy clustering and its effect on impact ionization in ternary III–V compounds

The influence of alloy clustering in ternary A_xB_1?xC III–V compounds on the impact ionization rate is discussed. A simple alloy clustering model is introduced and impact ionization rates are calculated assuming that the electron wavevector is much larger than the reciprocal cluster size. We show that the impact ionization rates of electrons and holes exhibit the same asymmetry as the band edge discontinuity of the AB-AC heterojunction. Numerical values are obtained for Al_xGa_1?xAs as a function of alloy composition x.
