Periurethral fat injection in the treatment of recurrent genuine stress incontinence

A benign, transient proliferation of atypical lymphocytes and a monoclonal rearrangement of the T-cell receptor beta (TRB) locus was found in a 60-year-old woman who presented with low-grade fever, anorexia and fatigue. A marked and transient atypical lymphocytosis (white blood cell count 90.5 x 10(9)/l) with CD8 surface antigen improved without specific treatment. Although tests for IgM antibodies to hepatitis A, varicella zoster, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) were all negative, a monoclonal gene rearrangement of TRB locus was observed in the DNA of the proliferated atypical lymphocytes by Southern blotting. The clonal rearrangement and the atypical lymphocytes disappeared after 14 d, and the patient has remained well for 7 years. These results suggest that monoclonal proliferation of CD8 lymphocytes can occur based on a non-neoplastic aetiology.     

InAs/AlSb/GaSb resonant interband tunneling diodes andAu-on-InAs/AlSb-superlattice Schottky diodes for logic circuits

Integrated resonant interband tunneling (RIT) and Schottky diode structures, based on the InAs/GaSb/AlSb heterostructure system, are demonstrated for the first time. The RIT diodes are advantageous for logic circuits due to the relatively low bias voltages (~100 mV) required to attain peak current densities in the mid-10⁴ A/cm ² range. The use of n-type InAs/AlSb superlattices for the semiconducting side of Schottky barrier devices provides a means for tailoring the barrier height for a given circuit architecture. The monolithically integrated RIT/Schottky structure is suitable for fabrication of a complete diode logic family (AND, OR, XOR, INV)     

Urban ecological structure and perceived child and adolescent psychological disorder

This research examined the distribution and ecological correlates of referrals of children and adolescents to the Regional Children's Centre, a psychological assessment and treatment centre located in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Referral data were collected by the Regional Children's Centre for the study period April 1992 through March 1994. The ecological structure of the study area was derived using principal components analysis of a set of socio-economic indicator variables from the 1991 Census of Canada and a cluster analysis of component scores. Referral rates were calculated for each ecological area for two referral subgroups; modi/conduct/stress-related concerns and neurophysiologically based concerns. The distribution of referrals was tested using the Poisson probability test. This test revealed that, for both subgroups analysed, the distribution of referrals in the study area was non-random. Stepwise multiple regression revealed a significant ecological relationship between the mood/conduct/stress-related concerns referral rate and the ecological structure of the study area. No such relationship was found, however, when examining referrals for neurophysiologically based concerns.     

Estimation of Circulating Blood Volume from a Tracer-Response Curve

A method is developed for analyzing sudden injection dye (tracer) curves in order to obtain the distribution of first passage times in the mammalian circulation. The moments of the distribution yield useful quantities such as circulating blood volume. The method involves the use of Liouville-Neumann series. The calculation of the first passage time distribution (FPD) also requires a deconvolution through the use of Fourier transforms, but the calculation of moments does not.     

The optimal projection equations with Petersen-Hollot bounds:robust stability and performance via fixed-order dynamic compensationfor systems with structured real-valued parameter uncertainty

A feedback control design problem involving structured real-valued plant parameter uncertainties is considered. A quadratic Lyapunov bound suggested by recent work of I.R. Petersen and C.V. Hollot (1986) is utilized in conjunction with the guaranteed cost approach of S.S.L. Chang and T.K.C. Peng (1972) to guarantee robust stability with robust performance bound. Necessary conditions that generalize the optimal projection equations for fixed-order dynamic compensation are used to characterize the controller that minimizes the performance bound. The design equations thus effectively serve as sufficient conditions for synthesizing dynamic output-feedback controllers that provide robust stability and performance     

Revised laboratory manual helps solve problems

This paper describes a project to design a laboratory manual which could be easily understood and used by both those who work in and those who utilize the laboratory in a large teaching hospital complex. Results indicated increased employee knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, and an improved relationship between patient units and the laboratory.
