The putative tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 5q for hepatocellular carcinoma is distinct from the MCC and APC genes

We have previously shown that the tumor suppressor gene for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without cirrhosis may be located on chromosome 5q35-qter. In this study, we analyzed nine cases of primary HCC without cirrhosis using probes from the MCC and APC genes, which are in the region 5q21-22. None of the informative cases had allele loss detected by these probes, whereas the probe lambda MS8 for the region 5q35-qter showed allele loss in six out of six informative cases. The results confirm that the putative tumor suppressor gene for HCC without cirrhosis on chromosome 5q is distinct from the MCC and APC genes.     

Radiological case of the month. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy

The authors report a case of pregnancy in a rudimentary horn diagnosed by laparotomy. The location could not be suspected by any clinical sign. This pregnancy stopped at 19 weeks of amenorrhoea. Any attempts of induction of labour failed. Laparotomy was necessary to assess the diagnosis and to allow the resection of the uterine horn. The authors present a review of literature.     

Reliability and validity of the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease

American visceral leishmaniasis is a main public health matter in Brazil. Since dogs have been incriminated as the main urban reservoir of AVL agent Leishmania chagasi, a cohort study aimed at understanding the dynamics of the canine infection was carried out in Jequié--an endemic community in the Northeast of Brazil. The inhabited urban and periurban areas of Jequié were divided into 140 clusters of 0.25 km2. All 1681 dogs domiciled in 34 randomly selected clusters were screened for Leishmania antibodies in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. After the seropositive dogs were painlessly eliminated, a cohort of 1286 seronegative dogs was followed up for 18 months, yielding a total of 1739.7 dog-years. The overall incidence of Leishmania infection, as assessed by the detection of Leishmania antibodies in blood samples collected every six months, was 6.55 cases/100 dog-years (95% confidence interval; CI 6.04-7.26). Two subsets of clusters, with 0.70 and 1.35 relative risks of infection, were identified. The annual emigration rate was 2.26 cases/100 dog-years (95% CI 1.86-2.66). The implications of these findings for the control of American visceral leishmaniasis are discussed.     

Strengthening national capital: a postcolonial analysis of lifelong learning policy in St Lucia, Caribbean

This paper provides a postcolonial policy analysis of the Education Sector Development Plan: 2000-2005 and Beyond in the small Caribbean island nation of St Lucia. The specific focus is upon the nature of the lifelong learning policy as incorporated in the Plan. This is shown to be a globalised policy discourse. Drawing on a number of postcolonial theorists, the paper works with a concept of the postcolonial as an aspirational politics. Bourdieu's concept of 'national capital' is also utilised in the analysis in relation to the attempt to manage some autonomy for the nation in the process of policy text production in education. The analysis demonstrates the way a postcolonial politics, manifest as strengthening national capital, worked in relation to the production of the Plan in its consultative mode of production and in its extensive cross-sector coverage. However, the analysis also shows evidence of the effects of residues of the colonial past in the hegemony of English in the Plan's recommendations, in the restriction of lifelong learning facilitation to schools and in the denial of a place for indigenous knowledges. The mode of lifelong learning supported is also dominated by a human capital framework and neglect of other capitals (social, cultural, etc.) for constituting what might be seen as a postcolonial and creole learning society. The paper also reflects upon the extent of the postcoloniality of the analysis provided.     

Mathematical analysis of viscometric (polymer) flow fields in capillaries: Taylor dispersion revisited

A general formulation for capillary flow of two miscible fluids – one a dilute plug of polymer fluid inserted into a fully developed Poiseuille flow of the other, a Newtonian stream – is examined for its long time behavior. Phenomenologically, the system evolves from an initial state, that of a plug within the boundaries of sharp, well defined fronts inside a Newtonian stream, to a more homogenized state in the very long time scale. This problem was addressed by G.I. Taylor but with regard to a system of two Newtonian fluids, leading to the well-known results commonly described as `Taylor axial dispersion'. In this paper, a general and systematic perturbation analysis is presented from which Taylor's result is recovered as a special case of a more general solution which applies to fluids incorporating elastic properties. In particular, the influence of viscoelasticity and (polymer) diffusivity on the observed pressure profile in the capillary conduit is examined. This effect is clearly separated out for small Peclet number flows using asymptotic and numerical analysis. The results identify the influence of fluid viscosity, elasticity, and diffusivity on the observed pressure profile and form the basis for the improved characterization of polymeric elasticity using capillaries – a finding that is of significant scientific and commercial interest. These results were obtained by the authors as a class of observations resulting from the perturbation analysis of forced-flow capillary devices in viscoelastic fluid property investigation.     

A DUCTILITY EXHAUSTION EVALUATION OF SOME LONG TERM CREEP/FATIGUE TESTS ON AUSTENITIC STEEL

Abstract— A limited number of long term creep/fatigue tests performed on two batches of Type 316 steel and one batch of associated 17Cr8Ni2Mo weld metal are reported. Test durations range from 5000 to 32,000 h and temperatures from 5.50 to 625 ° C. Subsequent metallographic examination shows the failures to be wholly or predominantly intergranular. The results are analysed using a ductility exhaustion approach and it is shown that the endurances obtained are within a factor of two of predicted values. The results confirm that the design approach to creep/fatigue currently being developed in the U.K. and based on ductility exhaustion is likely to be satisfactory.

Savoring Versus Dampening: Self-Esteem Differences in Regulating Positive Affect.

Five studies examined the hypotheses that when people experience positive affect, those low in self-esteem are especially likely to dampen that affect, whereas those high in self-esteem are especially likely to savor it. Undergraduate participants' memories for a positive event (Study 1) and their reported reactions to a success (Study 2) supported the dampening prediction. Results also suggest that dampening was associated with worse mood the day after a success (Study 2), that positive and negative affect regulation are distinct, that self-esteem is associated with affect regulation even when Neuroticism and Extraversion are controlled (Studies 3 and 4), and that self-esteem may be especially important for certain types of positive events and positive affect regulation (Study 5).
