In a previous study on Zygosaccharomyces bailii, three growth/no growth models have been developed, predicting growth probability of the yeast at different conditions typical for acidified foods (Dang, T.D.T., Mertens, L., Vermeulen, A., Geeraerd, A.H., Van Impe, J.F., Debevere, J., Devlieghere, F., 2010. Modeling the growth/no growth boundary of Z. bailii in acidic conditions: A contribution to the alternative method to preserve foods without using chemical preservatives. International Journal of Food Microbiology 137, 1-12). In these broth-based models, the variables were pH, water activity and acetic acid, with acetic acid concentration expressed in volume % on the total culture medium (i.e., broth). To continue the previous study, validation experiments were performed for 15 selected combinations of intrinsic factors to assess the performance of the model at 22 °C (60 days) in a real food product (ketchup). Although the majority of experimental results were consistent, some remarkable deviations between prediction and validation were observed, e.g., Z. bailii growth occurred in conditions where almost no growth had been predicted. A thorough investigation revealed that the difference between two ways of expressing acetic acid concentration (i.e., on broth basis and on water basis) is rather significant, particularly for media containing high amounts of dry matter. Consequently, the use of broth-based concentrations in the models was not appropriate. Three models with acetic acid concentration expressed on water basis were established and it was observed that predictions by these models well matched the validation results; therefore a “systematic error” in broth-based models was recognized. In practice, quantities of antimicrobial agents are often calculated based on the water content of food products. Hence, to assure reliable predictions and facilitate the application of models (developed from lab media with high dry matter contents), it is important to express antimicrobial agents' concentrations on a common basis—the water content. Reviews over other published growth/no growth models in literature are carried out and expressions of the stress factors' concentrations (on broth basis) found in these models confirm this finding.  相似文献

In the search for alternative chemotherapeutic strategies against leukemia, various 1‐indanone thiosemicarbazones, as well as eight novel platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes, with the formula [MCl2(HL)] and [M(HL)(L)]Cl, derived from two 1‐indanone thiosemicarbazones were synthesized and tested for antiproliferative activity against the human leukemia U937 cell line. The crystal structure of [Pt(HL1)(L1)]Cl.2M eOH, where L1=1‐indanone thiosemicarbazone, was solved by X‐ray diffraction. Free thiosemicarbazone ligands showed no antiproliferative effect, but the corresponding platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Platinum(II) complexes also displayed selective apoptotic activity in U937 cells but not in peripheral blood monocytes or the human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cell line used to screen for potential hepatotoxicity. Present findings show that, in U937 cells, 1‐indanone thiosemicarbazones coordinated to palladium(II) were more cytotoxic than those complexed with platinum(II), although the latter were found to be more selective for leukemic cells suggesting that they are promising compounds with potential therapeutic application against hematological malignancies.  相似文献

Lip synchronization is considered a key parameter during interactive communication. In the case of video conferencing and television broadcasting, the differential delay between audio and video should remain below certain thresholds, as recommended by several standardization bodies. However, further research has also shown that these thresholds can be relaxed, depending on the targeted application and use case. In this article, we investigate the influence of lip sync on the ability to perform real-time language interpretation during video conferencing. Furthermore, we are also interested in determining proper lip sync visibility thresholds applicable to this use case. Therefore, we conducted a subjective experiment using expert interpreters, which were required to perform a simultaneous translation, and non-experts. Our results show that significant differences are obtained when conducting subjective experiments with expert interpreters. As interpreters are primarily focused on performing the simultaneous translation, lip sync detectability thresholds are higher compared with existing recommended thresholds. As such, primary focus and the targeted application and use case are important factors to be considered when selecting proper lip sync acceptability thresholds.  相似文献

In this paper we address the design and implementation of a generic terminal architecture for videoconferencing based on the principle of programmable protocol stacks. In this architecture, there exist two types of software components. A first type are the multimedia engines, which are responsible for handling the multimedia stream (execution layer). Secondly, the managing components handle the multimedia engines' lifecycles and provide a set of network- and codec-independent CORBA-IDL interfaces which make building the desired protocol stack straightforward (middleware based control layer). As a result, the developed platform can be easily integrated in existing multimedia control frameworks such as the TINA architecture or the H.323 terminal framework.  相似文献

A new technique for the separation of bitumen from tar sand is described. In this technique an electrical current is passed through a quantity of tar sand which is positioned in a vessel beneath a column of water. The passage of current causes the tar sand and the lower portion of the water column to become violently agitated and to eject particles of bitumen and sand. The bitumen particles rise to the surface of the water where they combine to form a froth. The sand particles rise only a short distance and then fall back towards the bottom of the vessel. Figures for energy balance and for the composition of the extracted bitumen and the tailings are given for laboratory scale experiments. The technique is compared to the commercially used hot-water separation process.  相似文献

Chitosan has recently gained more interest due to its applications in food and pharmaceutics. Among others, the antimicrobial activity of chitosan has been pointed out as one of its most interesting properties of chitosan.The aim of this study was threefold: (1) the quantification of the antimicrobial effect of chitosan with a deacetylation degree of 94% and a molecular weight of 43 kDa on different psychrotrophic spoilage organisms and food pathogens. (2) The determination of the influence of different food components (starch, whey protein, NaCl and oil) on the antimicrobial effect of chitosan and (3) the investigation of the effects of chitosan coatings on controlling decay of minimally processed fruits and vegetables (strawberry and lettuce). For the first aim several bacteria and yeast were exposed to chitosan concentrations varying from 40 to 750 mg/l. Generally, Gram-negative bacteria seemed to be very sensitive for the applied chitosan (MIC0.006% (w/v)) while the sensitivity of Gram-positive bacteria was highly variable and that of yeast was intermediary (0.01% (w/v)). To achieve the second aim, the media, with one of these components added, were inoculated with Candida lambica (±2 log cfu/ml) and were incubated at 7°C until the yeast reached the stationary phase. Starch, whey proteins and NaCl had a negative effect on the antimicrobial activity. Oil conversely had no influence. For the third aim, the chitosan coating was formed by dipping the products in a chitosan–lactic acid/Na-lactate solution from which the pH was adjusted to the pH of the products. These products were equilibrium modified atmosphere (EMA)-packaged, stored at 7°C and during storage sensorially and microbiologically evaluated. A chitosan coating on strawberries was applicable while on mixed lettuce the chitosan coating was not applicable due to the development of a bitter taste. The microbiological load on the chitosan-dipped samples was lower for both products. The antimicrobial effect of chitosan on lettuce disappeared after 4 days of storage, while it maintained on the strawberries during 12 days.  相似文献
