Hydrogen fuel is a promising alternative to fossil fuels because of its energy content, clean nature, and fuel efficiency. However, it is not readily available. Most current producion processes are very energy intensive and emit carbon dioxide. Therefore, this article reviews technological options for hydrogen production that are eco-friendly and generate clean hydrogen fuel. Biological methods, such different fermentation processes and photolysis are discussed together with the required substrates and the process efficiency.  相似文献

This article describes the crystallization process of polypropylene random copolymer (PPCP) under isothermal conditions in presence of varying amounts of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) ranging from 0.5 to 4.0% w/w. Increase in the crystallization temperature under dynamic conditions confirmed the nucleating behavior of MWCNTs, which was also corroborated by crystallization studies under isothermal conditions. The crystallization kinetics was analyzed using Avrami equation and the parameters such as Avrami exponent, the equilibrium melting temperature and fold surface energy for the crystallization of PPCP chains in nanocomposites were obtained from the calorimetric data in order to determine the effect of MWCNTs on these parameters. Spherulitic growth of PPCP crystals was also investigated as a function of time and MWCNT content using hot stage polarizing microscope. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Herein, nanocrystals of Er3+ and Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 upconversion (UC) phosphor were prepared via the reverse-microemulsion method. The impact of different concentrations of Er3+ ions on the UC emission intensity after 980?nm diode laser excitation is discussed. The structure, morphology and composition of the nanophosphors were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and the results showed the presence of NaYF4 nanocrystals with hexagonal phases of NaYF4. The UC spectra revealed two emission bands including a green and a red emission band and the CIE coordinate for the samples were estimated. The present research revealed that the reverse-microemulsion approach will be suitable for the synthesis of efficient upconversion nanophosphors.  相似文献

We present efficient labelling of several proteins with orange‐emissive carbon dots. N‐Hydroxysuccinimide was used to activate the carboxyl groups of carbon dots, which subsequently reacted with the lysine groups present on the protein. Labelling was confirmed by UV absorption spectroscopy, PAGE and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. Protein‐conjugated carbon dots showed an enhancement in fluorescence lifetime and intensity owing to reduced intramolecular dynamic fluctuations. Single‐molecule fluorescence measurements showed reduced fluorescence fluctuations and higher photon budget after protein tagging. Our study opens up opportunities to use carbon dots as highly precise biolabelling probes.  相似文献

Biodegradable counterparts of petro plastics for packaging applications are highly desired due to environmental considerations. Agar can be a potential material due to its availability and biodegradability. However, moderate mechanical strength and thermal stability, in addition to poor resistance against water, needs to be addressed before agar can be commercially implemented as packaging material. As a step toward this objective, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced GO (RGO) were incorporated in agar and were solution casted in the form of films. The tensile strength was increased by 118.4% and 69.4% at 2% GO and 2% RGO loading, respectively. Higher interfacial bonding between GO and agar compared to that of RGO and agar was attributed for the observed mechanical properties. Resistance to swelling and hydrophobicity (contact angle) of the composite were improved as well when compared to pure agar. The tensile strength and the contact angle values were however, decreased after the addition of 2% GO and 2% RGO. The morphological investigation showed that the formation of pores at higher concentration of reinforcement was the contributing factor for the decrease in tensile strength. No significant change in thermal properties was observed. The transmittance value was reduced to 0% after the incorporation of GO and RGO. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. N‐Acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs) are used by a wide variety of bacteria for cell–cell communication in “quorum‐sensing”. These compounds are derived from L ‐homoserine lactone and a fatty acid, which varies in chain‐length, degree of saturation, and the presence or absence of an oxygen atom at C‐3. In this study we describe for the first time the occurrence of acyl chains carrying a methyl branch, and present a GC‐MS‐based method that can be used to distinguish these compounds from unbranched isomers. The bacterium Aeromonas culicicola produces several methyl branched AHLs. In Jannaschia helgolandensis—a marine bacterium of the Roseobacter clade—a doubly unsaturated AHL, (2E,9Z)‐N‐(2,9‐hexadecadienoyl)‐L ‐homoserine lactone, occurs. The location and configuration of the double bonds was proven by spectrometric investigation and synthesis. Finally, a method was developed to establish the absolute configuration of 3‐hydroxyalkanoyl‐HSLs by mild cleavage and chiral gas chromatography. The AHLs synthesized during this study were tested in sensor systems specific for certain AHL types. The results show that these compounds display varying responses to the respective sensors; this underlines the importance of determining the whole bouquet of AHLs and its function to fully understand their importance for regulatory functions in bacteria.  相似文献

For the first time (The patent application no. 201611000546 has been filed in India and USA.), nano-size Functionalized Brine sludge Precursor Material (FBSPM) containing multi-elemental and multi-shielding phases in the desired morphology and size has been synthesized by using conventional as well as microwave heating. It was reacted with polydimethylsiloxane for obtaining tailored hybrid inorganic–organic gel which is necessary for making advanced flexible and moldable x-ray radiation shielding material. The characterization studies of FBSPM confirm: (a) presence of shielding phases by XRD, (b) multi-elemental characteristics by EDS and (c) morphology and nano-size by FESEM. The quadrant of 15 mm thickness of the developed advanced flexible and moldable radiation shielding material has been tested for 30 kVp x-ray attenuation characteristics. Interestingly, it has been identified as providing 90% attenuation. The developed material possesses broad application spectrum ranging from x-ray and CT scanner room to nuclear power plants and other strategic radiation shielding installations.  相似文献

A hydrodynamic study was carried out on our patented radially cross-flow fluidized bed staged column, with the salt laden water and solid resins flowing counter-currently, to determine the loading/flooding criterion for a stable operation of the column, and also to ascertain the mal-distribution in flow. Residense time distribution measurements were taken to address the latter part of the study. The data collected from the hydrodynamic measurements show a wider range of liquid and solid flowrates that can be used for the stable operation of the column, in comparison to that obtained in the conventional multi-staged column. The extent of mal-distribution or channeling is also relatively smaller in the former. The observations are consistent with the mass-transfer results obtained in our recent study, where the separation of dissolved solids using the radially cross-flow ion exchange column was found to be 40% larger than that in the conventional column.  相似文献

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a serum protein whichunexpectedly folds to yield two stable tertiary structures withdifferent disulphide connectivities; native IGF-1 [18–61,6–48,47–52]and IGF-1 swap [18–61,6–47, 48–52]. Here we demonstratein detail the biological properties of recombinant human nativeIGF-1 and IGF-1 swap secreted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.IGF-1 swap had a ~30 fold loss in affinity for the IGF-1 receptoroverexpressed on BHK cells compared with native IGF-1.The parallelincrease in dose required to induce negative cooperativity togetherwith the parallel loss in mitogenicity in NIH 3T3 cells impliesthat disruption of the IGF-1 receptor binding interaction ratherthan restriction of a post-binding conformational change isresponsible for the reduction in biological activity of IGF-1swap. Interestingly, the affinity of IGF-1 swap for the insulinreceptor was ~200 fold lower than that of native IGF-1 indicatingthat the binding surface complementary to the insulin receptor(or the ability to attain it) is disturbed to a greater extentthan that to the IGF-1 receptor. A 1.0 ns high-temperature moleculardynamics study of the local energy landscape of IGF-1 swap resultedin uncoiling of the first A-region -helix and a rearrangementin the relative orientation of the A- and B-regions. The modelof IGF-1 swap is structurally homologous to the NMR structureof insulin swap and CD spectra consistent with the model arepresented. However, in the model of IGF-1 swap the C-regionhas filled the space where the first A-region -helix has uncoiledand this may be hindering interaction of Val44 with the secondinsulin receptor binding pocket.  相似文献
