We consider short frame turbo codes, suitable for delay-sensitive services such as conversational speech, or for encoding single ATM cells. We compare the uniform interleaver bound of Benedetto and Montorsi, and a union bound obtained by estimating the weight distribution due to the actual pseudo-random interleaver, with the simulated BER using an iterative decoder. We show that the uniform interleaver bound is significantly pessimistic at high SNR, where the random interleaver union bound is quite close. However, at lower SNR the ber exceeds the union bound, showing that it does not achieve ml decoding. We also consider half rate turbo codes formed by puncturing various proportions of the data and parity sequences, and adapt the uniform interleaver bounds for these codes. We show that while the union bounds predict better performance for data-punctured codes, in practice they perform better only at high snr and for limited proportions of data puncturing.  相似文献

A new adhesive test specimen design was developed which embodied several key attributes, the most important of which was inclusion of tension, mixed-mode, and shear deformation mechanisms. The specimen design was easy to manufacture, required only simple tension testing equipment to test, and provided simple specimen geometry and boundary conditions for use in finite element model correlation exercises. By design, the individual failure points for each of the deformation mechanisms within the test specimen were separated and could be related directly to characteristics of the force versus displacement information from the experimental test. Finite element predictions using a Gurson constitutive model with element deletion at failure were generated and compared with experimental test results. It was found that while the order of failure modes within the prediction was the same as that found within the test, the element deletion technique yielded an abrupt change between failure modes not seen in the experimental test, and that a more complex numerical representation of failure would be a valuable development. Overall, the test specimen development was successful in providing a simple and repeatable method by which complex cohesive failure modes in a bonded system could be evaluated and correlated back to predictive tests.  相似文献

The location of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) within the starch granule matrix was determined for-two wheat starch-PAN graft copolymers which contained 22% and 44% grafted PAN. Granules of graft copolymer (which closely resembled ungrafted starch in appearance) were fractured by ballmilling. The milled copolymer was then heated under reflux in dilute hydrochloric acid to remove the starch moiety, and the fracture surfaces in the remaining PAN (which was inert to these conditions) were examined with a scanning electron microscope. Areas in the grafted granules which contained little or no PAN thus appeared as voids in the fracture surfaces. Micrographs suggested that granules of low add-on graft copolymer were largely surface grafted. In the higher add-on product, grafting had taken place throughout most of the granule interior; however, small areas in the centers of some granules still contained little or no PAN.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ethyl eicosopentate (EPA-E) on local cerebral blood flow (1-CBF) and local glucose utilization (1-CGU) in specific regions of the brain in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). EPA-E (100 mg/kg body weight) or saline was orally administered to 8-week-old SHRSP. L-CBF and 1-CGU in the EPA-E-treated, saline-treated, and 8-week-old control rats were measured autoradiographically using 14C-iodoantipyrine and 14C-deoxyglucose (Sakurada's and Sokoloff's methods). The 1-CBF of the saline-treated group decreased significantly with age in all areas measured. EPA-E treatment alleviated the age-dependent decrease in 1-CBF in all areas, especially those in the basal ganglia. The 1-CGU of the saline-treated group did not change with age, however EPA-E treatment increased 1-CGU in all areas measured, though the changes were not significant. EPA-E ameliorated the decrease in cerebral blood flow and improved glucose metabolism in SHRSP suffering from severe hypertension. These results suggest that EPA-E may be useful in the prevention of stroke.  相似文献

While there is generalised agreement in the literature on the importance of involving family members in critical care practice, there is little in regard to the roles and responsibilities of both nurses and families. There are many factors that can influence the nurse-family relationship, in both positive and negative dimension, and this relationship can impact significantly on the family member's experience of critical illness. It can also impact on his or her perception of need and need satisfaction. However, the complex nature of critical care practice may be too demanding, both physically and emotionally, for nurses to respond to many of the family's needs and concerns.  相似文献

We study the interpixel cross talk introduced to digital holographic data storage by use of a multilevel phase mask at the data-input plane. We evaluate numerically the intensity distribution at the output detector for Fourier plane hologram storage in a limited-aperture storage medium. Only the effect at an output pixel of interpixel cross talk from the four horizontal and vertical neighboring pixels is considered, permitting systematic evaluation of all possibilities. For random two-level and pseudorandom six-level phase masks, the influence of the pixel fill factor, as well as the aperture size of the storage medium, is studied. Our simulations show that, for a given aperture size, a random two-level mask is more susceptible to interpixel cross talk than is a pseudorandom six-level mask. Decreasing the pixel fill factor below 94% with a pseudorandom six-level phase mask makes it theoretically possible to have a system with no errors from interpixel cross talk if one particular 5-pixel pattern is forbidden through modulation coding. Reducing the input fill factor below 85% means that no patterns need to be excluded.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: As part of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), prevalence surveys were conducted among representative samples of school children from locations in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North and South America. SUBJECTS: 257,800 children aged 6-7 years from 91 centres in 38 countries, and 463,801 children aged 13-14 years from 155 centres in 56 countries. METHODS: Written symptom questionnaires were translated from English into the local language for self-completion by the 13-14-year-olds and completion by the parents of the 6-7-year-olds. Rhinitis was described as a problem with sneezing, or a runny, or blocked nose when you (your child) DID NOT have a cold or the flu. Additional questions were asked about rhinitis associated with itchy-watery eyes, interference with activities and a history of hay fever ever. RESULTS: The prevalence of rhinitis with itchy-watery eyes ("rhinoconjunctivitis") in the past year varied across centres from 0.8% to 14.9% in the 6-7-year-olds and from 1.4% to 39.7% in the 13-14-year-olds. Within each age group, the global pattern was broadly consistent across each of the symptom categories. In centres of higher prevalence there was great variability in the proportion of rhinoconjunctivitis labelled as hay fever. The lowest prevalences of rhinoconjunctivitis were found in parts of eastern Europe, south and central Asia. High prevalences were reported from centres in several regions. CONCLUSION: These results suggest substantial worldwide variations in the prevalence and labelling of symptoms of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis which require further study. These differences, if real, may offer important clues to environmental influences on allergy.  相似文献

Interactions between an intelligent software agent (ISA) and a human user are ubiquitous in everyday situations such as access to information, entertainment, and purchases. In such interactions, the ISA mediates the user’s access to the content, or controls some other aspect of the user experience, and is not designed to be neutral about outcomes of user choices. Like human users, ISAs are driven by goals, make autonomous decisions, and can learn from experience. Using ideas from bounded rationality (and deploying concepts from artificial intelligence, behavioural economics, control theory, and game theory), we frame these interactions as instances of an ISA whose reward depends on actions performed by the user. Such agents benefit by steering the user’s behaviour towards outcomes that maximise the ISA’s utility, which may or may not be aligned with that of the user. Video games, news recommendation aggregation engines, and fitness trackers can all be instances of this general case. Our analysis facilitates distinguishing various subcases of interaction (i.e. deception, coercion, trading, and nudging), as well as second-order effects that might include the possibility for adaptive interfaces to induce behavioural addiction, and/or change in user belief. We present these types of interaction within a conceptual framework, and review current examples of persuasive technologies and the issues that arise from their use. We argue that the nature of the feedback commonly used by learning agents to update their models and subsequent decisions could steer the behaviour of human users away from what benefits them, and in a direction that can undermine autonomy and cause further disparity between actions and goals as exemplified by addictive and compulsive behaviour. We discuss some of the ethical, social and legal implications of this technology and argue that it can sometimes exploit and reinforce weaknesses in human beings.  相似文献
