Effects of observer metamerism in the determination of human color-matching functions

This article addresses the results of the recent North and Fairchild article on observer metamerism. It reports on the results of a different experiment that produced similar results to those of North and Fairchild. The history of observer metamerism is outlined briefly and some possible sources of the large variations in inter-observer matches are suggested. Finally, a plea for a commercially viable special index of metamerism for change in observer is formulated. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Esterification in reactive extrusion

A condensation type reaction has been studied for reactive extrusion in a twin-screw extruder. The esterification reaction is to graft a nonylphenyl-ethoxylate (NP8) onto a pre-maleated ethylene-propylene (EPR_MA). The kinetics were initially characterized in the static mixture using a thermally controlled call in a FTIR spectrometer. These were then used to predict the conversion along the length of the extruder screws, having determined the residence time distribution at various sampling locations. A reasonable fit with the data was obtained, although the kinetics seem to be slightly faster in the flowing medium than those predicted. Over short screw distances, the equilibrium rapidly approached equilibrium. Moreover, the NP8 was shown to penetrate the EPR_MA within screw distance of less than 1.3 L/D, despite using conveying elements known for their minimal mixing capacity. Within the molten medium, a mixing model showed that obtaining the expected conversion in a product does not imply that the reactants in the product have in fact been well mixed.     

Comparative study of lipid systems from various sources by rotational viscometry and potentiometry

We carried out the analysis of lecithins with a common polar group and paraffin chains of different lengths and degree of saturation at two levels, namely: (a) that of the paraffin chain proper, by studying whether structural defects arising from the different mobility of the lipid chains affected their rheological properties; and (b) that of the polar group, which is known to be affected by perturbations to the paraffin chain, and so should its ionization.     

The use of probability theory in fracture mechanics—A case study

A probabilistic approach to fracture mechanics in the form of a typical case study is described wherein the integrity of a high-pressure water pipeline is assessed. An analysis methodology is discussed incorporating the probability density functions of defect sizes, the statistics of defect occurrences and the statistical distribution of material properties. This method enables the analyst to supply a very simple assessment of safety, based on the probability of failure (a single number) which may be compared to accepted industrial standards (e.g. 10⁻⁶ for nuclear applications). It is argued that this method often offers the only way to scientifically and economically assess the integrity of fracture prone structures.     

Planning for CAD systems

A basic problem in buying a CAD system arises from the fact that, if you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there. The solution is to plan where you want to go, and the rest more-or-less follows. The author shows how there are several ways in which you can acquire the expertise so that you can define your destination (i.e. your total CAD requirement) and hence plan your route (the justification and selection of the system)     

Multidimensional augmented current equation including velocityovershoot

The augmented drift-diffusion current equation, which includes velocity overshoot effects through the space derivatives of the electric field, cannot be directly extended beyond one dimension. A new formalism is developed which considers the carrier heating and the distribution relaxation effects to obtain a multidimensional augmented drift diffusion current equation. The equivalent mobility containing the velocity overshoot correction is derived from the perturbation analysis on the carrier temperature using the energy balance equation. The issues related to the numerical implementation of this generalized model and the validity of the assumptions are also discussed     

Damage of polymers studied by micro-Fourier Transform Raman spectroscopy

Summary The potential of the micro-Fourier Transform Raman tool in examining specific localized regions in polymeric materials with some degree of fluorescence when analyzed by conventional Raman spectroscopy is examined. Analysis of characteristic bands of the vibrational spectra obtained in a small area damaged by a visible and NIR laser beam in commercial Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) shows a different conformer ratio than that observed in a non irradiated zone.
