High surface area charcoal bed filters have been used for over a half a century to adsorb undesirable vapors from gas streams. One problem encountered when using these niter beds is that there is presently no simple, reliable, nondestructive method to measure their Residual Adsorption Capacity, RAC. This is particularly critical in situations where harmful vapors are being adsorbed. An investigation has been underway to use pulses of weakly adsorbed gases such as ethane and/or methane to measure RAC. The hypothesis being that these weakly adsorbed gases will “count” unoccupied adsorption sites. In the present study, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) was used to “irreversibly” occupy available siles to various extents on different niters. In this work, the viability of producing biogenic hydroxyapatite from bio-waste animal bones, namely bovine (cow), caprine (goat) and galline (chicken), through a heat treatment process has been investigated. The animal bones were locally sourced, cleaned to remove collagen and subsequently heat treated in air atmosphere at different temperatures ranging from 600?°C to 1000?°C. From the range of sintering temperatures investigated, it was found that hydroxyapatite derived from bovine bone showed good thermal stability while those produced from caprine and galline bones exhibited phase instability with traces of tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) being detected after heat treatment beyond 700?°C. The porous nature of the bone samples can be observed from the microstructures obtained and supported by low relative density. Heating the bovine and caprine bones at selected temperatures yielded porous HA body, having hardness values that are comparable with human cortical bone. However, the sintered galline bone sample showed higher porosity levels and low hardness when compared to the other two bone types. 相似文献
Mushroom blanch water was concentrated by ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO). UF prefiltration was essential in preventing severe fouling during the RO process. When the UF blanch water permeate was processed by RO, linear relationships between pressure and flux were observed at all concentrations tested. The blanch water was concentrated by UF/RO from 2% to 13% total solids at 60°C and 120 KPa/5000 KPa operating pressures with flux higher than 15 L/m2 hr. Maximum concentration obtained was approximately 20% total solids with 90% recovery of the nonvolatiles. Recoveries of some major volatiles were above 50%. Panelists could not differentiate the original from the reconstituted blanch waters in sensory evaluations. 相似文献
In a recent study by Gurnani (1983), ‘Economic analysis of inventory systems’, three main conclusions were presented. (1) The inventory models analysed in his paper demonstrate that the inventory policy derived from the discounted (PW) coat differs substantially from that given by the traditional undiscounted inventory analysis. (2) The difference between the two depends upon the discounting rate. The discounting causes the optimum order quantity and correspondingly the period length to vary monotonically with the discounting rate. (3) However, it is not influenced by the inventory system planning horizon. This paper first examines each conclusion and demonstrates why his conclusions are either unfounded or irrelevant to his analysis. Next, some crucial derivational errors in his exposition are demonstrated via corrected formulations. Finally, a net present value maximizing framework that is consistent with modern theory of financial analysis, is suggested for the economic analysis of inventory systems. 相似文献
RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine), a nitramine explosive, is often found as a subsurface contaminant at military installations. Though biological transformations of RDX are often reported, abiotic studies in a defined medium are uncommon. The work reported here was initiated to investigate the transformation of RDX by ferrous iron (Fe(II)) associated with a mineral surface. RDX is transformed by Fe(II) in aqueous suspensions of magnetite (Fe3O4). Negligible transformation of RDX occurred when it was exposed to Fe(II) or magnetite alone. The sequential nitroso reduction products (MNX, DNX, and TNX) were observed as intermediates. NH4+, N2O, and HCHO were stable products of the transformation. Experiments with radiolabeled RDX indicate that 90% of the carbon end products remained in solution and that negligible mineralization occurred. Rates of RDX transformation measured for a range of initial Fe(II) concentrations and solution pH values indicate that greater amounts of adsorbed Fe(II) result in faster transformation rates. As pH increases, more Fe(II) adsorbs and k(obs) increases. The degradation of RDX by Fe(II)-magnetite suspensions indicates a possible remedial option that could be employed in natural and engineered environments where iron oxides are abundant and ferrous iron is present. 相似文献
An instrumental method of texture measurement for scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) meats after frozen storage has been developed to replace the sensory method. Non-destructive and destructive compressive forces at 50 and 80% deformation respectively and shear peak force gave significant correlation coefficients of 0.89, 0.78 and 0.82 respectively with sensory evaluation of the cooked meats. The coefficient of variation associated with the compression method was smaller, however, than with the shear method. 相似文献
Solvent extracts were prepared from Manda Enzyme®, one of the fermented health foods, and their activities of radical scavenging and cancer cell growth inhibition were evaluated. Manda Enzyme® was extracted with 55% ethanol, and then fractionated into n‐hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol‐soluble and methanol‐insoluble fractions. The antioxidant activities were in the order chloroform > ethyl acetate > other fractions and of each fraction were positively related to the amount of total phenolics and the intensity of brown color. The cancer cell growth inhibitory activities were in the order n‐hexane > chloroform > other fractions. Proliferation of HRT‐18, HCT‐48 and HepG2 human cancer cells was inhibited by the treatment of the n‐hexane fraction of Manda Enzyme® at a concentration of 400 μg/mL to the extent of 75, 89 and 90%, respectively. From these results, it is considered that Manda Enzyme® has chemically different ingredients showing strong antioxidant and anticancer activity in vitro. 相似文献
Past editions of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide for Design of Pavement Structures have served well for several decades; nevertheless, many serious limitations exist for their continued use as the nation’s primary pavement design procedures. Researchers are now incorporating the latest advances in pavement design into the new Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), developed under the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) 1-37A project and adopted and published by AASHTO. The MEPDG procedure offers several dramatic improvements over the current pavement design guide and presents a new paradigm in the way pavement design is performed. However, MEPDG is substantially more complex than the AASHTO Design Guide by considering the input parameters that influence pavement performance, including traffic, climate, pavement structure and material properties, and applying the principles of engineering mechanics to predict critical pavement responses. It requires significantly more input from the designer. Some of the required data are either not tracked previously or are stored in locations not familiar to designers, and many data sets need to be preprocessed for use in the MEPDG. As a result, tremendous research work has been conducted and still more challenges need to be tackled both in federal and state levels for the full implementation of MEPDG. This paper, for the first time, provides a comprehensive bird’s eye view for the MEPDG procedure, including the evolvement of the design methodology, an overview of the design philosophy and its components, the research conducted during the development, improvement, and implementation phases, and the challenges remained and future developments directions. It is anticipated that the efforts in this paper aid in enhancing the mechanistic-empirical based pavement design for future continuous improvement to keep up with changes in trucking, materials, construction, design concepts, computers, and so on.
