Treatment issues arising in working with victims of violent crime and other traumatic incidents of adulthood.

This article examines treatment issues in the assessment and treatment of trauma resulting from incidents of adulthood, as exemplified by the experience of victims of violent crime. Issues addressed include resistance, trauma-engineered identifications, roles based on violence-based parataxic distortions, and recommendations for an integrative ongoing listening perspective. The Role of Trust in Channels of Strategic Communication for Building Civil Society

In these turbulent times, development communication is a growing and important area of both academic research and practice. This article explores the role of strategic communication channels in the development of civil society in Bosnia. This case study reports the results of a survey that asked Bosnians about their levels of trust in government officials, alternative media, and state-controlled media outlets. The findings suggest that shortly after the war Bosnians had medium levels of trust in their communication channels, and when it comes to obtaining important information, it appears that alternative media were considered more trustworthy than either the state media or local government officials. Finally, political affiliation and ethnicity affect trust in communication channels in complex ways.     

Victimization and substance abuse among women: Contributing factors, interventions, and implications.

Although the literature indicates that there is an association of victimization with substance abuse, there has been limited research focused on understanding and synthesizing the factors that have been identified as contributing to victimization and substance abuse and on interventions designed to address these contributing factors. The purposes of this article are to (a) review the literature on factors related to victimization and substance abuse, (b) review interventions and outcomes, and (c) discuss clinical implications for interventions and research. Results suggest that there is a high rate of co-occurrence of victimization and substance abuse among women, that the factors contributing to victimization and substance abuse are complex, and that there is a lack of treatment models addressing victimization and substance abuse. Modeling continuous electropermutation with effects of water dissociation included

The repeating unit consisting of a cell pair of one concentrate and one feed compartment of an electropermutation stack is modeled. Both the feed and the concentrate compartments are filled with an ion‐exchange textile material. Enhanced water dissociation taking place at the surface of the membrane is included in the model as a hetrogeneous surface reaction. Results from simulations of nitrate removal for drinking water production are presented and comparisons with previous experimental results are made. The influence of both conductive and inert textile spacers on the process is investigated via simulations. © 2010 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010     

Review of liquid metal corrosion issues for potential containment materials for liquid lead and lead–bismuth eutectic spallation targets as a neutron source

Lead (Pb) and lead–bismuth eutectic (44Pb–56Bi) have been the two primary candidate liquid metal target materials for the production of spallation neutrons. Selection of a container material for the liquid metal target will greatly affect the lifetime and safety of the target subsystem. For the liquid lead target, niobium–1 wt% zirconium (Nb–1Zr) is a candidate containment material for liquid lead, but its poor oxidation resistance has been a major concern. In this paper, the oxidation rate of Nb–1Zr was studied based on the calculations of thickness loss resulting from oxidation. According to these calculations, it appeared that uncoated Nb–1Zr may be used for a 1-year operation at 900°C at P_O2=1×10^–6 Torr, but the same material may not be used in argon with 5-ppm oxygen. Coating technologies to reduce the oxidation of Nb–1Zr are reviewed, as are other candidate refractory metals such as molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten. For the liquid lead–bismuth eutectic target, three candidate containment materials are suggested, based on a literature survey of the materials’ compatibility and proton irradiation tests: Croloy 2-1/4, modified 9Cr–1Mo, and 12Cr–1Mo (HT-9) steel. These materials seem to be used only if the lead–bismuth is thoroughly deoxidized and treated with zirconium and magnesium.

ABSTRACT

When regarding the atmospheric contact drying of granular beds wetted with a liquid mixture, both the drying rate and the selectivity of the process, i.e. the change of moisture composition, are of interest. The batch drying of a free flowing ceramic substance, wetted with a 2-propanol-water mixture, is investigated in a rotary dryer with heated wall and air flow.

The theoretical analysis is based on physical models for heat and mass transfer, moisture migration and particle transport, which are presented in examples.

The experimental and theoretical results show that higher selectivities can be achieved by reducing the particle size because of the lower liquid-phase mass-transfer resistance. An increase of the rotational speed leads to a higher drying rate with slightly decreased selectivity if the particles are sufficiently small, since contact heat transfer is enhanced.
