Large group treatment of severely disturbed/conduct-disordered adolescents

Group psychotherapy is an effective treatment modality for many teenagers. Although group treatment usually refer to a group of 10 or fewer members, this article argues that larger groups are an even better choice when the members are severely disturbed/conduct-disordered adolescents. Although challenging and exciting, group psychotherapy with these youngsters can be a difficult task. Their narcissistic vulnerability, impaired ability to mediate between internal and external events, and their propensity for violently expressing their frustration, rage, and despair demand a structure that is both firm and flexible, and carefully planned strategies. A structure and technique that maximizes safety during and following group meetings, that positively influences behavior, and that may facilitate an altered perception of self and others are discussed.     

ANALYZING MYOPIC APPROACHES FOR MULTI-AGENT COMMUNICATION

Choosing when to communicate is a fundamental problem in multi-agent systems. This problem becomes particularly challenging when communication is constrained and each agent has different partial information about the overall situation. We take a decision-theoretic approach to this problem that balances the benefits of communication against the costs. Although computing the exact value of communication is intractable, it can be estimated using a standard myopic assumption—that communication is only possible at the present time. We examine specific situations in which this assumption leads to poor performance and demonstrate an alternative approach that relaxes the assumption and improves performance. The results provide an effective method for value-driven communication policies in multi-agent systems.     

Stability of fats used for deep fat frying

This paper presents the results of some commercial doughnut frying tests using types of shortening available to the baker. The broad conclusion is that, from the stability viewpoint, the difference in shortening when used for deep fat frying is exaggerated.     

Effects of supercritical CO2 and N2O pasteurisation on the quality of fresh apple juice

Supercritical pasteurisation is receiving increasing attention as an alternative technology for foodstuff pasteurisation, but often the possible effects on the perceptible quality are not sufficiently considered.     

High-lifetime GaAs on Si using GeSi buffers and its potential for space photovoltaics

Record-high minority carrier lifetimes exceeding 10 ns are reported for GaAs grown on Si wafers using compositionallygraded GeSi buffers coupled with monolayer-scale control of the GaAs/Ge interface nucleation during molecular beam epitaxy. The GaAs layers are free of anti-phase domain disorder, with threading dislocation densities at or below 2×10⁶ cm⁻². Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) reveals that crossdiffusion of Ga, As and Ge at the GaAs/Ge interface formed on the graded buffers are below detection limits in the interface region. Test diodes yielded excellent I–V characteristics, matching those of GaAs diodes on Ge and GaAs wafers, indicating that to a first order, threading dislocations do not limit device performance.     

In-situ forces in the human posterior cruciate ligament in response to posterior tibial loading

The presence of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) DNA in liver, spleen, and kidney samples of HCMV-seropositive trauma victims during latency was demonstrated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using primers reactive with the major immediate early gene exon 4 and the structural gene pp150. Sequence analysis of the PCR amplificates showed more than 95% homology with the reference HCMV strain AD169. The few mutations observed were mostly distributed randomly. In one subject two types of the MIE-4 gene were detected, and in another subject two types of the pp150 gene were found, suggesting that different strains of HCMV can be found in organs of the same patient during latency.     

Toward ultrahigh-efficiency aluminum oxide microcavitylight-emitting diodes: guided mode extraction by photonic crystals

In this paper, we present an improved version of microcavity light-emitting diodes, relying on the use of a low-index material, aluminum oxide. Our work addresses in particular the injection scheme required by the insulating nature of this oxide. The device we fabricated demonstrated efficiencies up to 28% in air, using only planar technology. In these structures, most of the emission is guided. We further propose to include photonic crystals to extract this guided light. The design of the photonic crystals are discussed and substantiated by photoluminescence-based experiments     

Vitamin a added to fats as related to stability during baking

Summary Various types of baked goods prepared from fats fortified with vitamin A have been assayed for the vitamin by the Carr-Price color reaction and by U.S.P. bio-assays. In products such as bread, biscuits, and cake, which are baked under moderate conditions, it appears that 80 to 100 per cent of the vitamin survives the baking process. In pie crust, which undergoes more severe baking conditions, considerable destruction, depending on the extent of the baking, is likely to occur.
