Summary The polymerization of styrene with catalysts based on Ni(acac)2 supported on SiO2 and Al2O3 was investigated. Using catalysts based on MAO supported on silica, a highly isotactic polystyrene was obtained. Nevertheless, the Al2O3-supported catalyst can promote isospecific polymerization activated by common. alkyl aluminum compounds even by any prior support treatment with MAO. In artificial intelligence (AI), a number of criticisms were raised against the use of probability for dealing with uncertainty. All these criticisms, except what in this article we call the non-adequacy claim, have been eventually confuted. The non-adequacy claim is an exception because, unlike the other criticisms, it is exquisitely philosophical and, possibly for this reason, it was not discussed in the technical literature. A lack of clarity and understanding of this claim had a major impact on AI. Indeed, mostly leaning on this claim, some scientists developed an alternative research direction and, as a result, the AI community split in two schools: a probabilistic and an alternative one. In this article, we argue that the non-adequacy claim has a strongly metaphysical character and, as such, should not be accepted as a conclusive argument against the adequacy of probability.

Food proteins and peptides are able to exert a variety of well-known bioactivities, some of which are related to well-being and disease prevention in humans and animals. Currently, an active trend in research focuses on chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, delineating their major pathogenetic role in age-related diseases and in some forms of cancer. The present study aims to investigate the potential effects of pseudocereal proteins and their derived peptides on chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. After purification and attribution to protein classes according to classic Osborne’s classification, the immune-modulating, antioxidant, and trypsin inhibitor activities of proteins from quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) seeds have been assessed in vitro. The peptides generated by simulated gastro-intestinal digestion of each fraction have been also investigated for the selected bioactivities. None of the proteins or peptides elicited inflammation in Caco-2 cells; furthermore, all protein fractions showed different degrees of protection of cells from IL-1β-induced inflammation. Immune-modulating and antioxidant activities were, in general, higher for the albumin fraction. Overall, seed proteins can express these bioactivities mainly after hydrolysis. On the contrary, higher trypsin inhibitor activity was expressed by globulins in their intact form. These findings lay the foundations for the exploitation of these pseudocereal seeds as source of anti-inflammatory molecules.  相似文献

We investigate the use of subspace analysis methods for learning low-dimensional representations for classification. We propose a kernel-pooled local discriminant subspace method and compare it against competing techniques: kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and generalized discriminant analysis (GDA) in classification problems. We evaluate the classification performance of the nearest-neighbor rule with each subspace representation. The experimental results using several data sets demonstrate the effectiveness and performance superiority of the kernel-pooled subspace method over competing methods such as KPCA and GDA in some classification problems.  相似文献

Shigella is a leading diarrheal cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries and in children under five years of age. Increasing levels of antimicrobial resistance make vaccine development an even higher global health priority. S. flexneri serotype 6 is one of the targets of many multicomponent vaccines in development to ensure broad protection against Shigella. The O-antigen (OAg) is a key active ingredient and its content is a critical quality attribute for vaccine release in order to monitor their stability and to ensure appropriate immune response. Here, the optimization of two methods to quantify S. flexneri 6 OAg is reported together with the characterization of their performances. The optimized Dische colorimetric method allows a tenfold increment of the sensitivity with respect to the original method and is useful for fast analysis detecting selectively methyl-pentoses, as rhamnose in S. flexneri 6 OAg. Also, a more specific HPAEC-PAD method was developed, detecting the dimer galacturonic acid-galactosamine (GalA-GalN) coming from S. flexneri 6 OAg acid hydrolysis. These methods will facilitate characterization of S. flexneri 6 OAg based vaccines. The colorimetric method can be used for quantification of other polysaccharide containing methyl-pentoses, and the HPAEC-PAD could be extended to other polysaccharides containing uronic acids.  相似文献

A study on the filtering activity has been carried out on reared specimens of the demosponge Spongia officinalis var. adriatica coming from an off-shore farm displaced off the Apulian coast (Ionian Sea). The experience was carried out under laboratory conditions, by using natural seawater collected from the sponge environment. The study demonstrates a high efficiency of the sponge in removing bacteria. Bacterial concentration significantly decreases in presence of the sponge, with a marked drop after 2 h from the start of the experience. The maximum clearance rate was 210 ml h(-1) g(-1) DW at 60 min. Retention efficiency reached the highest value of 61% at 120 min. The bacterial density removed by the S. officinalis filtering activity was 12.3 +/- 1.8 x 10(4) cells ml(-1) corresponding to a biomass of about 11.7 +/- 1.4 microg Cl(-1). The sponge fed preferentially large- and medium-size bacteria, whereas the small ones are fed after the removal of the largest size categories. The results obtained suggest that S. offcinalis is a suitable species for marine environmental bioremediation.  相似文献

A fluorous metal–organic framework [Cu(FBTB)(DMF)] (FMOF‐3) [H2FBTB = 1,4‐bis(1‐H‐tetrazol‐5‐yl)tetrafluorobenzene] and fluorous nonporous coordination polymer [Ag2(FBTB)] (FN‐PCP‐1) are synthesized and characterized as for their structural, thermal, and textural properties. Together with the corresponding nonfluorinated analogues lc‐[Cu(BTB)(DMF)] and [Ag2(BTB)], and two known (super)hydrophobic MOFs, FMOF‐1 and ZIF‐8, they have been investigated as low‐dielectric constant (low‐κ) materials under dry and humid conditions. The results show that substitution of hydrogen with fluorine or fluoroalkyl groups on the organic linker imparts higher hydrophobicity and lower polarizability to the overall material. Pellets of FMOF‐1, FMOF‐3, and FN‐PCP‐1 exhibit κ values of 1.63(1), 2.44(3), and 2.57(3) at 2 × 106 Hz, respectively, under ambient conditions, versus 2.94(8) and 3.79(1) for lc‐[Cu(BTB)(DMF)] and [Ag2(BTB)], respectively. Such low‐κ values persist even upon exposure to almost saturated humidity levels. Correcting for the experimental pellet density, the intrinsic κ for FMOF‐1 reaches the remarkably low value of 1.28, the lowest value known to date for a hydrophobic material.  相似文献

Sarcopenia is a gradual and generalized skeletal muscle (SKM) syndrome, characterized by the impairment of muscle components and functionality. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), endogenously formed within the body from the activity of cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE), cystathionine- β-synthase (CBS), and mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase, is involved in SKM function. Here, in an in vitro model of sarcopenia based on damage induced by dexamethasone (DEX, 1 μM, 48 h treatment) in C2C12-derived myotubes, we investigated the protective potential of exogenous and endogenous sources of H2S, i.e., glucoraphanin (30 μM), L-cysteine (150 μM), and 3-mercaptopyruvate (150 μM). DEX impaired the H2S signalling in terms of a reduction in CBS and CSE expression and H2S biosynthesis. Glucoraphanin and 3-mercaptopyruvate but not L-cysteine prevented the apoptotic process induced by DEX. In parallel, the H2S-releasing molecules reduced the oxidative unbalance evoked by DEX, reducing catalase activity, O2 levels, and protein carbonylation. Glucoraphanin, 3-mercaptopyruvate, and L-cysteine avoided the changes in myotubes morphology and morphometrics after DEX treatment. In conclusion, in an in vitro model of sarcopenia, an impairment in CBS/CSE/H2S signalling occurs, whereas glucoraphanin, a natural H2S-releasing molecule, appears more effective for preventing the SKM damage. Therefore, glucoraphanin supplementation could be an innovative therapeutic approach in the management of sarcopenia.  相似文献
