Focus of attention, chronic expectancy, and responses to a feared stimulus.

Tested an attentional model of fear-based behavior with 44 undergraduates. It was predicted that among Ss with moderate fear of snakes, heightened self-attention during an approach attempt would cause increased awareness of existing anxiety, followed by 1 of 2 courses of events: Ss who believed that they could do the behavior in spite of their fear were expected to redirect their attention to the behavior–goal comparison and exhibit no behavioral deficit. Ss who doubted their ability to do the behavior were expected to divert their attention from the behavior–goal comparison and to withdraw behaviorally from the approach attempt. Measured mutual coupling between microstrip antennas

Mutual coupling betweenL-band rectangular, nearly square, and circular microstrip antennas has been investigated experimentally by a series of measurements of theS-parameters. The mutual coupling level decreases monotonically with increasing separation between elements with theE-plane coupling down 20 dB and theH-plane coupling down 25 dB for typical adjacent element spacings. For 1/16 in and 1/8 in substrates atL-band the predominant coupling mechanism is via the space wave since the surface wave is shown experimentally to be small.     

The female alcoholic in treatment.

The plight of the female alcoholic is examined with particular reference to her contact with treatment agencies and the role of the psychologist in providing improved services for such women. It is noted that the stigma attached to the female alcoholic prevents many women from seeking appropriate treatment. Once in treatment women, in contrast to men, are often seen as having less ability to cope, have fewer role models among the treatment staff and are at greater risk to be prescribed and become dependent on psychotropic medication. The ViewStation: a software-intensive approach to media processing and distribution

The ViewStation architecture embodies a software-intensive approach to the support of interactive media-based applications. Starting from the premise that the raw media data, e.g., the video pixels themselves, must eventually be made accessible to the application, we have derived a set of architectural guidelines for the design of media-processing environments. The resultant ViewStation architecture, as described in this paper, consists of the VuSystem, a complete media-programming environment, and the VuNet, a substrate for the acquisition, communication, and rendering of video and closed caption text. We describe a set of computer-participative applications that demonstrate the present day viability of applications that actively process live media-based information. Early performance results illustrate the affordability and benefits of our software-intensive approach.     

A model for software reuse

Software reusability is widely believed to be a key to help overcome the ongoing software crisis by improving software productivity and quality. New computer technology and the demands of an advancing society require new and more complicated software. It is unrealistic to expect that every software system can be developed solely reusing existing software; however, software reusability has proven to be a way of enhancing software productivity and quality in different organizations. It is also believed that reuse of code segments alone does not significantly reduce software development effort.By creating reuse support information while software is being developed (when the software is best known to software developers), the reuse effort for both software development and maintenance can be potentially reduced.In this paper, five types of RSI are presented: Semantic Web, Horizontal Web, Vertical Web, Syntactic Web, and Alternative Web. We collectively call these five webs a Quintet Web. The Semantic Web enables software developers to locate a software segment. The Horizontal Web provides a means to reuse a block of soflware along with other types of software from other phases of a development process. The inter-phase integration of software can be performed through this Web. The Vertical Web identifies the vertical relationship of a software block to its operational environment. The Syntactic Web locates all statements in which a variable is used. The Alternative Web provides alternative software blocks that perform an identical operation.A prototype of the Quintet Web is presented.     

Perceived Partner Reactions to Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer: Impact on Psychosocial and Psychosexual Adjustment.

Two studies examined breast cancer patients' perceptions of their partners' reactions to their diagnosis and treatment as influences on 3 aspects of patients' well-being: psychosexual adjustment, emotional distress, and marital satisfaction. Study 1, cross-sectional, indicated that partner initiation of sex, frequency of sex, a positive 1st sexual experience after treatment, and especially perception of the partner's emotional involvement in the relationship, were relevant to these outcomes. Study 2, longitudinal, confirmed many of these findings in prospective tests across 1 year of recovery after surgery. Partner involvement prospectively predicted all 3 outcomes. Partner initiation of sex predicted greater marital satisfaction; partner adverse reaction to the scar predicted less marital satisfaction. Rated quality of the 1st sexual experience after treatment predicted less distress. The pattern suggests that women's impressions of their partners' emotional involvement after surgery for breast cancer forecast their adjustment in sexual, marital, and emotional arenas over the following year.
