Determining Intent — Opportunistic vs Targeted Attacks

To assess the importance and potential impact of an incident accurately computer security professionals need to understand an offender’s criminal skill, knowledge of targets, and intent. A thief who selects targets of opportunity based on insecure systems presents a significantly different threat than an individual who targets a specific organization to obtain specific information. This article compares two intellectual property theft cases to provide readers with practical investigative insights, noting costly mistakes and pointing out behaviour reflected in digital evidence. Although these cases are based on actual investigations, they have been modified to protect the innocent.     

Nursing diagnosis: language antithetical to nursing's ontology

The term nursing diagnosis is constructed in male, medical language. As such, it is proposed that it has no legitimacy in nursing discourse as it is antithetical to notions claimed foremost in nursing's ontology. It is also posited that the term 'nursing diagnosis', whilst reinforcing biomedicine, has little or no meaning to many nurses, is not understood by patients and has no justifiable place in health care discourse.     

EMP coupling through cable shields

Both tubular shields and shields with apertures are discussed with reference to the physical coupling mechanisms and their mathematical representations in terms of transmission-line models.     

A CONVENIENT DOMINANT SELECTION MARKER FOR GENE TRANSFER IN INDUSTRIAL STRAINS OF SACCHAROMYCES YEAST: SMRI ENCODED RESISTANCE TO THE HERBICIDE SULFOMETURON METHYL

The SMR1-410 gene of S. cerevisiae, encoding resistance to the herbicide sulfometuron methyl (SM), was used as a dominant selection marker in yeast replicating and yeast integrating vectors for the transformation of wild type strains of baking, brewing (ale and lager), distilling, wine and sake Saccharomyces yeasts. Transformation of lithium treated cells by a YEp vector resulted in transformation frequencies ranging from 200 to 8,000 transformants per 10 ug of DNA. Utilizing a yeast integrating vector with SMR1–410 as the only yeast DNA sequences, it was demonstrated that a single copy of SMR1–410 is sufficient to confer stably inherited SM resistance. Thus the SMR1–410 sequence has the unique ability to act as a selectable marker and to also provide a site for chromosomal integration. Since transformants were resistant to levels at least seven fold higher than wild type strains the resistance phenotype was clearly expressed and easily scored in all industrial strains tested. Unlike other selection markers derived from mammalian or bacterial cells, SMR1–410 is derived from S. cerevisiae. Thus industrial utilization of this marker as a means of genetically improving food and beverage strains of Saccharomyces yeasts by recombinant DNA technology is enhanced, as government regulatory agencies are likely to view it in a more favourable light.     

Studies of the morphology of one-way drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate) films by X-ray diffraction

Films made by stretching amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in one direction have been examined using techniques of wide- and narrow-angle X-ray diffraction. The films were not subsequently annealed. The in-plane c-axis orientation of crystallites was assessed from measurements of reflections from 1&;#x0304;05 crystal planes as in the method of Dumbleton and Bowles. However, we found that rather than tending to align parallel to the draw direction, the crystallites tended to lie in two groups inclined at a small angle to the draw direction. The angle of tilt of this ‘preferred’ direction to the draw axis became smaller for more highly drawn films, and a plot of tensile strength against tilt angle shows a trend to a ‘strength limit’ for zero tilt. (This tilt must not be confused with the well-known and quite different crystalline tilt which occurs after drawn PET is annealed.) Wide-angle diffraction has also been used to estimate crystal dimensions, and low-angle diffraction was used to determine long-period spacings. An analysis of the shape of the diffraction maxima gave an estimate of the shape of the diffracting units, and their influence on mechanical properties is discussed.     

The outcome of psychotherapy with children.

Examined 75 studies, published between 1952 and 1983, in which children who received psychotherapy were compared with controls or children receiving another form of treatment. Only those studies using Ss younger than a mean age of 13 yrs at the time of treatment were included. Exceptions to the age limitation were made only if separate analyses for younger children were reported or if individual data from older Ss could be eliminated. Results show that therapy with children was similar in effectiveness to therapy with adults; treated children achieved outcomes about two-thirds of a standard deviation better than untreated children. Although behavioral treatments appeared to be more effective than nonbehavioral treatments, this apparent superiority was due largely to the types of outcome and target problems included in behavioral studies. No differences in outcome were found to result from other treatment characteristics such as the use of play in therapy or the administration of treatment individually or in groups. The evidence suggests that previous doubts about the overall efficacy of psychotherapy with children can be laid to rest. A bibliography of the studies examined is appended. CMOS drive and control circuitry for 1-10 MHz power conversion

The design, implementation, and experimental evaluation of CMOS subcircuits that can be combined to implement integrated control and drive for 1-10 MHz power circuits are presented. The approach taken is to develop controller/driver ICs for a specific prototype power converter. By maximizing the performance of the different subcircuits in successive design iterations, the fundamental questions about the viability of CMOS technology for high-frequency controller/driver applications can be answered. The ability of CMOS to satisfactorily perform at these high frequencies is documented     

Partial structure of the gene encoding the 78 kDa gastrin binding protein excludes a close relationship with the peroxisomal trifunctional enzyme

A 10.9 kb porcine genomic clone encoding nucleotides 124-732 of the cDNA for the porcine 78 kDa gastrin-binding protein has been isolated and characterized. The coding sequence is interrupted by 7 introns, which vary in length from 93 to 3000bp. The positions of the intron/exon junctions are different from the junctions in the gene encoding the rat peroxisomal trifunctional enzyme. Despite 33% amino acid sequence identity between the two proteins it is concluded that the porcine gastrin binding protein is not closely related to the rat trifunctional enzyme.
