The effects of caffeine withdrawal on cardiovascular and gastrointestinal responses.

The withdrawal of caffeine from 18 psychiatric inpatients with hypertension, tachycardia, or gastrointestinal complaints (GTCs) over an 8-wk period resulted in decreased blood pressure, heart rate, and GTCs and increased headache complaints. Perspectives on future health care.

Discusses the achievement of health goals for the future through changes in behavior. Goals include immunization, lowering the infant mortality rate, controlling blood pressure, and lowering the number of cigarette smokers. The role of health care providers in this effort is discussed, and reports from the Public Health Service and the American Psychological Association are briefly described. Society's options for promoting positive health behaviors without being coercive and the responsibility of researchers to practice with integrity are discussed. Alkaline phosphatases in tissues and sera of cats

The numbers and widths of bands of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in polyacrylamide gels and the comparison of their electrophoretic mobility to that of a reference substance (Rf value) were found to be reliable aids in the identificaiton of various isoenzymes in in serum and organ extracts from cats. The hepatic isoenzyme was identified in sera of clinically normal adult cats, pregnant cats late in gestation, and cats with common bile duct occlusion. In addition to the hepatic isoenzyme, placental ALP was found late in gestation in sera from queens. Sera from kittens less than 15 weeks of age contained only the osseous ALP isoenzyme.     

Structural changes associated with the semiconductor-to-metal transition in Ti2O3

Single crystal x-ray structure determinations of Ti₂O₃ at 8 temperatures through the region where this material undergoes a semiconductor-to-metal transition show that the TiTi distance along the three-fold axis increases as predicted by previous theories. The slight decrease in the TiTi distance in the basal plane suggests that the conduction band in Ti₂O₃ is effectively nonbonding.     

Increased biological activity of a recombinant factor IX variant carrying alanine at position +1

In attempts to improve the post-translational modification andprocessing of recombinant factor IX (FIX) we have altered thecDNA sequence encoding pre-pro-FIX using site-directed mutagenesisand have expressed the variant cDNAs in BHK21 cells using avaccinia-virus-derived vector. We find that substitution ofthe tyrosine residue at +1 for an alanine increases the biologicalactivity of the recombinant molecules 2–fold. On the otherhand, substitution of the proline at –3 for a valine resultsin no significant change to the specific activity of the protein.Other alterations to the N-terminus of the FIX proteins, inattempts to mimic other vitamin-K-dependent proteins, resultin the failure to produce a secreted polypeptide. N-terminalsequence analysis of purified recombinant molecules revealsa correlation between specific activity and the efficiency ofcorrect pro-sequence cleavage. -Carboxylation analysis of purifiedrecombinant proteins indicates that each molecule includingunmutated FIX is completely -carboxylated in this system. Thusthe observed increase in biological activity of FIX variantscontaining an alanine at position +1 is not due to increased-carboxylation but, at least in part, to more efficient pro-peptidecleavage.     

Perception of maternal child-rearing attitudes by schizophrenic males, their normal male siblings, and normal males whose siblings are normal.

This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that a group of normal male siblings of schizophrenics (N-Sc) will agree with a group of male schizophrenic siblings (Sc-N) in their perception of their mothers' child-rearing attitudes and will perceive these attitudes as being more deviant (undesirable) than a group of normal males whose siblings are all normal (N-N). Perception was measured on a child-study questionnaire which Ss were instructed to answer as they thought their mothers would have when Ss were growing up. The results were that the normal siblings of schizophrenics perceive their mothers' attitudes as being more martyred and subtly dominating than do normal siblings of normals (p = .05). There were no other significant differences, although the trend was toward perception of maternal attitudes as least deviant by the N-N group, most deviant by the N-Sc group, and in-between by the Sc-N group. The use of coloring ingredients in fatty food products. Their physiology,chemistry, and stability

Summary Vegetable oil suspensions of ethyl bixin andbeta-carotene, to which vitamin A may be added, have excellent stability and are readily adaptable for use in coloring margarine and other fatty food products. Based on normal finished product turnover these colorants maintain adequate stability. In frying fats and popcorn oils only FD&C Yellows 3 and 4 are completely stable.     

Bias of Sire Evaluations for Natural Service Sires and Age of Sire

In the Herdmate Comparison natural service sires often were overevaluated relative to sires in artificial insemination, and younger sires were underevaluated relative to older sires. The Modified Contemporary Comparison was designed to remove these biases. These sire evaluation methods were compared for their evaluation of artificial insemination versus natural service sires. In addition, the Modified Contemporary Comparison and Herdmate Comparison were compared with the Northeast Artificial Insemination Sire Comparison for their evaluation of sires of different ages. Sires from natural service were evaluated lower on the Modified Contemporary Comparison than on the Herdmate Comparison. Younger sires were evaluated higher on the Modified Contemporary Comparison than on the Herdmate Comparison. In both cases the Modified Contemporary Comparison values were intermediate to those of the Herdmate Comparison and Northeast Artificial Insemination Sire Comparison. The Modified Contemporary Comparison appears to remove a substantial portion of the biases favoring natural service and older sires in the Herdmate Comparison. Both the Modified Contemporary Comparison and the Northeast Artificial Insemination Sire Comparison show positive genetic trend.
