"On the job" motor vehicle deaths number more than 4,000 annually in the U.S. and comprise nearly one-third of all work-related deaths. Yet the Department of Labor has set no standards relating to on-the-road safety of the millions of workers whose jobs entail large amounts of driving, and Department of Transportation standards affecting occupational safety cover only drivers in interstate commerce. Drivers of some commercial vehicles, such as heavy trucks, are at special risk of injury because trucks have usually been exempted for many years from federal motor vehicle safety standards--such as standards for brakes and seatbelts--designed to prevent crashes or protect occupants in crashes. Observations based on a series of 150 fatal crashes involving tractor trailers illustrate the need for better protection of this large population of high-risk workers. Clarification of responsibility within the various federal agencies and application of available knowledge and technology are essential.  相似文献

In this article, we discussed the emerging informatics issues of high-throughput screening (HTS) using automated fluorescence microscopy technology, otherwise known as high-content screening (HCS) in the pharmaceutical industry. Optimal methods of scoring biomarkers and identifying candidate hits have been actively studied in academia and industry, with the exception of data modeling topics. To find candidate hits, we need to score the images associated with different compound interventions. In the application example of RNAi genome-wide screening, we aim to find the candidate effectors or genes which correspond to the images acquired using the three channels. Scoring the effectors is equivalent to scoring the images based on the number of phenotypes existing in those images. Our ultimate objective of studying HTS is to model the relationship between gene networks and cellular phenotypes, investigate cellular communication via protein interaction, and study the disease mechanism beyond the prediction based on the molecular structure of the compound. Finally, computational image analysis has become a powerful tool in cellular and molecular biology studies. Signal processing and modeling for high-throughput image screening is an emerging filed that requires novel algorithms for dynamical system analysis, image processing, and statistical modeling. We hope that this article will motivate the signal processing communities to address challenging data modeling and other informatics issues of HTS.  相似文献

In semiconductor manufacturing, the accurate placement of circuit components ensures the proper functioning of microelectronic circuits. This is often subject to photolithography, an optical technique that transfers circuit patterns from photomasks to silicon wafers. Sources of placement error include aberration and misalignment between different levels, and we focus on the former. Aberration is an optical phenomenon that often degrades imaging system performance. Since aberration differs from one imaging system to another, a photomask design that minimizes the aberration-induced placement error is desired. In this paper, we discuss the optimization process of a general one-dimensional mask pattern under a general illumination condition. The constraint is a known population mean of the root mean square aberrations for the imaging systems under consideration. To apply the theory, we search for the optimal parameters for two common mask designs: alternating phase-shifting masks (PSMs) and attenuated PSMs. The theoretical results are compared with those from a Monte Carlo analysis on a large set of imaging systems. These results are indicative to mask manufacturers and circuit designers of increasing manufacturability of circuits.  相似文献

Two advanced techniques have been developed for modeling vapor pressure within the plastic IC packages during solder reflow. The first involves the extension of the "wetness" technique to delamination along multimaterial interface and during dynamic solder reflow. Despite its simplicity, this technique is capable of offering reliable and accurate prediction for packages with high flexural rigidity. For packages with low flexural rigidity, the new "decoupling" technique that integrates thermodynamics, moisture diffusion, and structural analysis into a unified procedure has been shown to be more useful. The rigorous technique has been validated on both leadframe-based as well as laminate-based packages. With high accuracy and computational efficiency, these dynamic modeling tools will be valuable for optimization of package construction, materials, and solder reflow profile against popcorn cracking for both SnPb and Pb-free solders  相似文献

To improve the electrical properties of electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs), different types of aldehydes, salicylaldehyde and transcinnamaldehyde, were introduced into ECA formulations. During the curing process, the aldehydes acted as a reducing agent and reduced metal oxide in ECAs. At the same time, aldehydes could consume ambient oxygen and prevent the oxidation of the metal fillers in the ECA. The oxidation product of aldehydes, carboxylic acids with shorter molecular chains, could partially replace or remove the long chain stearic acid (C 18) surfactant on the lubricated Ag flakes and enhance the electrons tunneling between the Ag flakes in the ECAs. As such, the multiple effects of aldehydes in ECAs improved the conductivity significantly. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermomechanical analysis studies indicated the improved performance for mechanical and physical properties of ECAs as well  相似文献

Although the construction pollution index has been put forward and proved to be an efficient approach to reducing or mitigating pollution level during the construction planning stage, the problem of how to select the best construction plan based on distinguishing the degree of its potential adverse environmental impacts is still a research task. This paper first reviews environmental issues and their characteristics in construction, which are critical factors in evaluating potential adverse impacts of a construction plan. These environmental characteristics are then used to structure two decision models for environmental-conscious construction planning by using an analytic network process (ANP), including a complicated model and a simplified model. The two ANP models are combined and called the EnvironalPlanning system, which is applied to evaluate potential adverse environmental impacts of alternative construction plans.  相似文献

Partnering has been advocated for use in construction as a project-delivery approach to curb dispute and enable a cooperative contracting environment. Successful construction partnering is perceived to derive benefits to both developers and contractors. In view of significant implications to successful project delivery, there has been a surge of research and studies on construction partnering. These studies typically focus on the partnering process as well as the identification of critical success factors. Among the various success factors that underpin partnering success, establishing trust among partners is considered the most important. Moreover, skeptics have been swift to point out that establishing trust in construction is daunting. A better understanding of the role of trust and its manifestation in partnering efforts is therefore of both academic and practical value. In this study, motivating trust in construction partnering is described within the classic framework of “the prisoner’s dilemma,” which suggests the trust cycle can be kick-started if construction partners put cooperation before competition and self-interest. This paper reports a study that is designed to suggest a suitable candidate for the trust initiator. As such, the critical trust factors for two groups of construction partners in Hong Kong—developers/consultants and contractors—are first identified. It is found that “performance” and “permeability” of partners are the two most critical trust factors. “Performance” describes the partner’s competence and problem-solving ability as perceived by their counterpart. “Permeability” reflects the partner’s openness in sharing information. The result of a multiple-regression analysis further suggests that the contractor is in a position to initiate trust through competent performance and maintaining effective communication with the client. In this manner, the trust cycle can expand with reciprocal trustworthiness from the client.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a 2-D virtual reality (VR) program for training people with intellectual disabilities to shop. Study Design: Pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design. Participants: Sixteen persons with intellectual disabilities (age 17-23 years; IQ = 40-54). Intervention: A VR program or a conventional program training them in supermarket-shopping skills. Main Outcome Measure: Checklist for supermarket-shopping skills. Results: Participants in both training groups showed significant improvement. There was no significant difference in effectiveness between the two methods. Conclusions: The VR program appears effective in training people with intellectual disabilities in an important community living skill. A refinement algorithm for electromagnetic field computations using a combination of finite element and meshless methods is introduced. Bridging scales are used to separate the finite element and meshless shape functions to make the refinement hierarchical and to uphold the mathematical properties such as consistency and linear independence for all the bases. To facilitate the application of the proposed algorithm, details about the node addition, requirements for the node distribution, and relationships between the finite element and meshless shape functions, as well as the determination of the stop criterion are also fully addressed. Primary numerical results are reported to demonstrate and validate the applicability and advantages of the proposed algorithm over traditional ones.  相似文献
