An automated inspection station for machine-vision grading of potatoes

A prototype inspection station based on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection standards was developed for potato grading. The station consisted of an imaging chamber, conveyor, camera, sorting unit, and personal computer for image acquisition, analysis, and equipment control. A sample of 9.1kg (201b) of pregraded potatoes were evaluated in three separate experimental runs to assess the system performance. The system correctly classified 80%, 77%, and 88% of the moving potatoes in the three runs at 3 potatoes/min, and 98%, 97%, and 97%, in three runs of stationary potatoes. Shape analysis was adversely affected by the potato motion, and this contributed to the misclassification error.     

Scalability study of the ad hoc on‐demand distance vector routing protocol

As mobile networking continues to experience increasing popularity, the need to connect large numbers of wireless devices will become more prevalent. Many recent proposals for ad hoc routing have certain characteristics that may limit their scalability to large networks. This paper examines five different combinations of modifications that may be incorporated into virtually any on‐demand protocol in order to improve its scalability. The scalability of current on‐demand routing protocols is evaluated through the selection of a representative from this class of protocols. The performance of the un‐modified on‐demand protocol is compared against that of it combined with each of the scalability modifications. Each scheme's behavior is analyzed in networks as large as 10,000 nodes through detailed simulation. Report of the Second Fusion Energy Sciences Committee of Visitors

This report summarizes the findings and recommendations of the second Committee of Visitors (COV) whose charge was to review the manner in which the U. S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fusion Energy Science (OFES) manages certain programs under its charter. The specific programs reviewed by this COV involve confinement innovation and basic plasma sciences. The charge letter from the Department of Energy is included as Appendix A.     

What Situations Induce Intimate Partner Violence? A Reliability and Validity Study of the Proximal Antecedents to Violent Episodes (PAVE) Scale.

The current study investigated the reliability of a new self-report questionnaire assessing stimuli that would likely elicit intimate partner violence. The Proximal Antecedents to Violent Episodes (PAVE) scale is a 30-item, Likert-type measure designed to assess situations that would reportedly precede the use of violence. In Study 1, an exploratory factor analysis on a clinical sample revealed 3 factors: Violence to Control, Violence Out of Jealousy, and Violence Following Verbal Abuse. In Study 2, the factor structure was replicated on a community sample using confirmatory factor analysis. In both studies, different types of batterers, on the basis of A. Holtzworth-Munroe and G. L. Stuart's (1994) typology, scored differently on the 3 factors in ways consistent with theory. Therefore, the PAVE shows promise as a reliable and valid tool to help to understand the context and function of intimate partner violence. An electroanalytical application of 2-aminothiazole-modified silica gel after adsorption and separation of Hg(II) from heavy metals in aqueous solution

2-Aminothiazole covalently attached to a silica gel surface was prepared in order to obtain an adsorbent for Hg(II) ions having the following characteristics: good sorption capacity, chemical stability under conditions of use, and, especially, high selectivity. The accumulation voltammetry of mercury(II) was investigated at a carbon paste electrode chemically modified with silica gel functionalized with 2-aminothiazole (SIAMT-CPE). The repetitive cyclic voltammogram of mercury(II) solution in the potential range −0.2 to +0.6 V versus Ag/AgCl (0.02 mol L⁻¹ KNO₃; v=20 mV s−1) show two peaks one at about 0.1 V and other at 0.205 V. The anodic wave peak at 0.205 V is well defined and does not change during the cycles and it was therefore further investigated for analytical purposes using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry in differents supporting electrolytes. The mercury response was evaluated with respect to pH, electrode composition, preconcentration time, mercury concentration, “cleaning” solution, possible interferences and other variables. The precision for six determinations (n = 6) of 0.02 and 0.20 mg L⁻¹ Hg(II) was 4.1 and 3.5% (relative standard deviation), respectively. The detection limit was estimated as 0.10 μg L⁻¹ mercury(II) by means of 3:1 current-to-noise ratio in connection with the optimization of the various parameters involved and using the highest-possible analyser sensitivity.     

Documenting and explaining the common AAB pattern in music and humor: Establishing and breaking expectations.

The AAB pattern consists of two similar events followed by a third dissimilar event. The prevalence of this pattern in the aesthetic domain may be explained as violation of expectation: A minimum of two iterations is required to establish a repetitive pattern; once established, it is most efficient to promptly violate the expected continuance of the pattern to produce the maximal aesthetic effect. We demonstrate the prevalence of this pattern (in comparison to AB or AAAB) in a representative sample of a variety of musical genres and in a representative sample of repetitive genre of jokes. We also provide experimental evidence that the AAB pattern in jokes is maximally effective in producing a humor response in participants. What makes vocational rehabilitation effective? Program characteristics versus employment outcomes nationally in VA.

With the focus on well-defined models for rehabilitation of people with mental illness, there is interest in program elements that predict successful outcomes. Data on programmatic elements from 92 Veterans Affairs Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) programs were merged with 6,891 individual records. General estimation equation analyses were used to identify correlates of 3 dependent variables representing successful outcomes. Community-based work at the individual level was positively associated with all 3 measures of success. Program emphasis on assertive outreach was positively associated with competitive employment and achievement of constructive activity. Greater amounts of assertive outreach and less integration of mental health and vocational staff were associated with a greater likelihood of constructive activity. These results suggest that the best outcomes are achieved by community-oriented programs incorporating assertive outreach. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
