Departments of transportation in the United States are under increasing pressure to accelerate projects to meet user-defined constraints and reduce the inconvenience to the traveling public. Although there is information about acceleration projects in other industries, there has been little specifically aimed at highway projects. A domestic scan sponsored by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program was tasked with providing information in this area. The objective of this paper is to synthesize the resulting information into fundamentals that support successful planned accelerated highway project delivery. Case studies of how departments of transportation successfully accelerated the construction of four very different projects in California, Florida, and Texas serve as the basis for identifying these fundamentals. The fundamentals include upfront and detailed planning, designs that facilitate accelerated construction, a collaborative environment for project stakeholders, and incentives and disincentives to motivate construction contractors. 相似文献

Pesticide adsorption by soil clays can be dramatically influenced by the exchangeable cations present. Among the common exchangeable base cations in soils (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+), K+-saturated clays frequently demonstrate the strongest affinity for pesticides. In the presence of multiple exchangeable cations in the system, we hypothesize that the magnitude of pesticide sorption to soil minerals is proportional to the fraction of clay interlayers saturated with K+ ions. To test this hypothesis, we measured sorption of three pesticides with different polarities (dichlobenil, monuron, and biphenyl) by homoionic K- and Ca-smectite (SWy-2) in KCl/CaCl2 aqueous solutions. The presence of different amounts of KCl and CaCl2 resulted in varying populations of K+ and Ca2+ on the clay exchange sites. The sorption of dichlobenil and, to a lesser extent monuron, increased with the fraction of K+ on clay mineral exchange sites. Ca- and K-SWy-2 displayed the same sorption capacities for nonpolar biphenyl. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that at lower fractions of K+-saturation, exchangeable K+ ions were randomly distributed in clay interlayers and did not enhance pesticide sorption. At higher populations of K+ (vs Ca2+), demixing occurred causing some clay interlayers, regions, or tactoids to become fully saturated by K+, manifesting greatly enhanced pesticide sorption. The forward and reverse cation exchange reactions influenced not only K+ and Ca2+ populations on clays but also the nanostructures of clay quasicrystals in aqueous solution which plays an important, if not dominant, role in controlling the extent of pesticide sorption. Modulating the cation type and composition on clay mineral surfaces through cation exchange processes provides an environmental-safe protocol to manipulate the mobility and availability of polar pesticides, which could have applications for pesticide formulation and in environmental remediation. 相似文献

The effect of light and seed rinsing during the germination of lentil seeds (Lens culinaris var. vulgaris, cultivar Magda-20) on the level of monosaccharides, disaccharides and α-galactosides (raffinose, ciceritol and stachyose) was investigated. The total soluble sugar content corresponded to about 9% of the mature seed weight, about 65% of which was α-galactosides. Germination brought about a large decrease in α-galactosides: 18% to 40% losses after 3 days and 100% after 6 days. However, glucose, which was not detected in ungerminated seeds, as well as fructose and sucrose gradually increased during germination. The content of α-galactosides decreased more rapidly when germinating seeds were given 6 h light per day, but under these conditions there was also a major reduction in the levels of fructose, glucose and sucrose. Seeds rinsed daily showed a greater reduction of α-galactosides and an increase in the levels of fructose, glucose and sucrose. When seeds were germinated for 10 days in the dark with daily rinsing, the content of α-galactosides decreased gradually during the first 4 days and they were not detected after 6 days. Under these conditions, fructose, glucose and sucrose, which represented about 3% of the mature seed weight, started increasing after day 2 and represented more than 13% of the germinated seed dry weight after 10 days. 相似文献

Barium magnesium fluoride (BaMgF4) has recently emerged as a strong candidate for application as the gate dielectric in ferroelectric random access memory (FERRAM) devices with nondestructive readout (NDRO). In earlier papers we reported the successful growth of oriented BaMgF4 films on Si(100) and other substrates in a ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) system, as well as the results of the structural and electrical characterization of these ferroelectric films. In the present paper, we review some of the earlier results, and also examine the effect of variations in the growth temperature and various post-growth anneals on the stoichiometry, crystallinity, orientation, and electrical characteristics of the BaMgF4 films. Initial attempts at integrating the ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FEMFET) with the standard CMOS VLSIC processing, as well as the effect of adding a thin capping layer of SiO2 on the BaMgF4 will also be described. 相似文献

Power- and bandwidth-efficient differentially encoded transmission over slowly time-varying fading channels with noncoherent reception and without channel state information is considered. For high bandwidth efficiencies, combined phase and amplitude modulation is used. For increased power efficiency, channel coding and multiple-symbol differential detection are applied, i.e., interleaving and detection are based on blocks of N>2 consecutive symbols. The presented concepts are directly applicable to transmission over flat fading channels. However, concentrating on the situation of frequency-selective channels, we consider their application to multicarrier transmission using orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). When coding across subcarriers, OFDM transforms the actual frequency-selective channel into a slowly time-varying frequency-nonselective fading channel. This paper presents a design for multilevel coding schemes to approach theoretical limits for power- and bandwidth-efficient noncoherent transmission over the equivalent fading channel. It is shown that bit-interleaved coded modulation, which relies on Gray labeling, is competitive only in the case of conventional differential detection with N=2. Simulation is widely applied as a practical tool for planning and analysis in many industries. However, in the case of construction processes, it has not yet emerged from the research stage into practice. The lack of confidence in selection of a probability distribution function (PDF) for an activity duration has limited the use of simulation as a practical tool for constructors. A modified β1-β2 plane analysis by AbouRizk and Halpin revealed that most of the construction data sets they analyzed laid in the beta region. Based on research in experimental psychology, it is recommended that the subjective information used to define beta parameters include the minimum and maximum activity durations, as well as the mode and the 75th or 25th percentiles. Atypical expression of CD44 splice variants has been implicated in the progression of numerous tumors. This abnormal CD44 expression is presumed to result from gene alterations that cause tumorigenic transformation. Two tumor types that have been linked to specific gene alterations are schwannomas, which have mutations in the neurofibromatosis (NF) type 2 (NF2) gene, and neurofibromas, which characteristically possess NF type 1 (NF1) gene mutations. We examined CD44 expression in normal sciatic nerves, in schwannomas with confirmed NF2 mutations, and in neurofibromas and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor tissue and cell lines from NF1 patients. Compared to normal nerves, schwannomas express higher total levels of CD44 and additional splice variants, whereas CD44 expression in neurofibromas is unaltered. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor tissue and cell lines express the CD44v6 epitope, which is not expressed by normal Schwann cells or by other Schwann cell tumors. These data indicate that altered CD44 expression correlates strictly with mutations in the NF2 but not NF1 gene and suggest that CD44v6 might be a marker for the malignant transformation of Schwann cells. 相似文献

This paper investigates a methodology for the optimization of wet granulation processes in planetary mixers. A model formulation was granulated in a planetary mixer (two different bowl sizes). The wet masses were characterized by their bulk density and consistency (as measured by mixer torque rheometry), and the feasibility of scale-up from one mixer bowl to the other was studied using a dimensionless numbers approach for the estimation of the power consumption at the granulation end point. Both bowls gave the same dimensionless power relationships (a relationship between the power number, Reynolds number, Froude number, and bowl fill ratio), which could therefore be used for calculating the power consumption level when the wet mass achieves its target values of density and consistency, i.e., the point at which granulation should be stopped. It was also shown that batches granulated in different conditions (batch size, blade speed) in two planetary mixers, but presenting similar wet mass characteristics (bulk density and consistency) led to dry granules of similar properties: granule size distribution, density, friability, and flow. This work suggests that it is possible to characterize the wet mass by only two parameters which describe the quality of the downstream granules. The scale-up procedure based on the use of dimensionless numbers was found to be applicable to planetary mixers, provided they give one common dimensionless power relationship. 相似文献
