Natural occurrence of Fusarium toxins in feedstuff

The mycotoxins diacetoxyscirpenol, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone, produced by Fusarium roseum, were found naturally occuring in mixed feed samples. In all cases analyzed, deoxynivalenol occurred together with zearalenone. The natural occurrence of zearalenone in sesame seed is reported for the first time. Strains of F. roseum isolated in various parts of the world form feed implicated in animal mycotoxicosis produced monoacetoxyscirpenol, diacetoxyscirpenol, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone.     

Cardiovascular risk reduction in a community setting: some comments

Four case reports are presented of patients who ate the meat of a hog inadvertently fed seed treated with fungicides containing ethyl mercury chloride. The clinical, electrophysiological, and toxicological, and in two of the patients the pathological data, showed that this organic mercury compound has a very high toxicity not only for the brain, but also for the spinal motoneurones, peripheral nerves, skeletal muscles, and myocardium.     

Superior efficacy of liposomal amphotericin B with prolonged circulation in blood in the treatment of severe candidiasis in leukopenic mice

In leukopenic mice with severe systemic candidiasis, single-dose treatment (5 mg of amphotericin B [AMB]/kg of body weight) with long-circulating polyethylene glycol-coated AMB liposomes (PEG-AMB-LIP) resulted in zero mortality and a significant reduction in the number of viable Candida albicans in the kidney, whereas 70% mortality was seen in mice treated with five daily doses of AmBisome (5 mg of AMB/kg . day). When the first of five daily doses of AmBisome was combined with a single low dose of Fungizone (0.1 mg of AMB/kg), the efficacy was equal to that of PEG-AMB-LIP.     

Group routing without group routing tables: an exercise in protocol design

We present a group routing protocol for a network of processes. The task of the protocol is to route data messages to each member of a process group. To this end, a tree of processes is constructed in the network, ensuring that each group member is included in the tree. To build this tree, the group routing protocol relies upon the local unicast routing tables of each process. Thus, group routing is accomplished by composing two protocols: an underlying unicast routing protocol, whose detailed behavior is unknown but its basic properties are given, and a protocol that builds a group tree based upon the unicast routing tables. The group routing protocol is developed in three steps. First, a simple protocol is obtained, and is proven correct. Then, the protocol is refined twice. Each refined protocol improves upon its predecessor by satisfying all of the predecessor's properties plus some additional stronger properties. The final protocol has the property of adapting the group tree to changes in the unicast routing tables without compromising the integrity of the group tree, even in the presence of unicast routing loops.     

Clinico-epidemiological analysis of imported malaria in Donetsk region (1979-1997)

AIM: The study of possibility of reappearance of malaria foci in the Donets region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 322 cases of imported malaria (IM) in the Donets region registered in 1979-1997 have been analysed clinically and epidemiologically. Malaria was diagnosed in immigrants from and visitors to Africa, Asia and Latin America, malaria-endemic Azerbaidjan, Tadzhikistan, Afghanistan. RESULTS: Late diagnosis of malaria occurred in immigrants and businessmen who got infected during their business trips. Causative agents of malaria imported from Azerbaijan and Asia were resistant to chemoprophylaxis with delagil and primaxine. Clinical forms of IM are described. CONCLUSION: There is a real danger of malaria reappearance in the Donetsk region as the residents are at risk of being infected from late-diagnosis foreign tourists, immigrants, refugees.     

A rural vision of a healthy community

The planimetric Z-plasty proposed by Roggendorf provides elongation by excision of a pair of triangular pieces of tissue. The application of planimetric Z-plasties has been modified by making the vertical angle flexible, and making them continuous in the same or in opposite directions. Continuous planimetric Z-plasties in the same direction elongate an oblique contracture in the longitudinal direction. Continuous planimetric Z-plasties in an alternative direction elongate a disproportioned scar contracture in the longitudinal direction. Both techniques partially reduce unsightly scarring. Furthermore, they can be used in combination with V-Y-plasties. These modifications permit rational planing of the treatment of complicated scars with contracture.
