Predeformation affects the work-hardening behavior of sheet metals in sequential forming operations by producing various strain
histories in different parts of the sheet. Several investigators have reported the effects of two-stage deformation on the
behavior of sheet metals, particularly justification has been presented on face-centered cubic (fcc) alloys. However, the
works on low-carbon ferritic steels are not conclusive. This article reports some new findings of the effects of two modes
of predeformation on the subsequent stress-strain relationship in ultra-low-carbon sheet steels. The details of a laboratory
test system are presented along with methods used to reduce the data. The effect of the stability ratio, a measure of the
degree to which the interstitial atoms are free, on the hardening rate at second-stage of deformation was studied. For stabilized
sheet steels, it was found that changes in strain path from equibiaxial stretching to uniaxial tension cause an increase in
the flow stress relative to the flow stress at similar effective strain in continued monotonic. For unstabilized sheet steels,
a significant increase in the flow stress was not observed with either equibiaxial prestraining or cold rolling and equibiaxial

Kendler and Zuriff both chided the authors for interjecting values into the realm of science. The authors, however, state that both seriously misread the argument, imagining that they talked about "morality" when they did not. The authors claim to hold the same view as Kendler and Zuriff about the dichotomy between data and values and revisit portions of their argument further questioned. To Johnson, they state that the issues are not as clear cut as he has suggested. The authors do, however, reevaluate their original article in light of his criticisms. BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that Streptomyces malonyl CoA: holo acyl carrier protein transacylases (MCATs) provide a link between fatty acid and polyketide biosynthesis. Two recent studies have provided evidence that the presence of MCAT is essential for polyketide synthesis to proceed in reconstituted minimal polyketide synthases (PKSs). In contrast to this, we previously showed that the holo acyl carrier proteins (ACPs) from type II PKSs are capable of catalytic self-malonylation in the presence of malonyl CoA, which suggests that MCAT might not be necessary for polyketide biosynthesis. RESULTS: We reconstituted a homologous actinorhodin (act) type II minimal PKS in vitro. When act holo-ACP is present in limiting concentrations, MCAT is required by the synthase complex in order for polyketide biosynthesis to proceed. When holo-ACP is present in excess, however, efficient polyketide synthesis proceeds without MCAT. The rate of polyketide production increases with holo-ACP concentration, but at low ACP concentration or equimolar AC:KS:CLF (KS, ketosynthase; CLF, chain length determining factor) concentrations this rate is significantly lower than expected, indicating that free holo-ACP is sequestered by the KS/CLF complex. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of polyketide biosynthesis is dictated by the ratio of holo-ACP to KS and CLF, as well as by the total protein concentration. There is no absolute requirement for MCAT in polyketide biosynthesis in vitro, although the role of MCAT during polyketide synthesis in vivo remains an open question. MCAT might be responsible for the rate enhancement of malonyl transfer at very low free holo-ACP concentrations or it could be required to catalyse the transfer of malonyl groups from malonyl CoA to sequestered holo-ACP. 相似文献

A microencapsulation and nanoparticle deposition technique, termed “repair‐and‐go,” is employed for inducing mechanical restoration of damaged polymer films. In “repair‐and‐go,” polymer‐stabilized emulsion droplets, containing surface‐functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles, traverse a substrate and deposit their nanoparticle contents selectively into the damaged regions. Surface‐oxidized poly(dimethylsiloxane) is employed as the substrate, and dynamic mechanical analysis reveals the enhanced mechanical properties of the film following nanoparticle deposition. We apply instrumental variables (IV) techniques to a pooled data set of employment-focused experiments to examine the relation between type of preschool childcare and subsequent externalizing problem behavior for a large sample of low-income children. To assess the potential usefulness of this approach for addressing biases that can confound causal inferences in child care research, we compare instrumental variables results with those obtained using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. We find that our OLS estimates concur with prior studies showing small positive associations between center-based care and later externalizing behavior. By contrast, our IV estimates indicate that preschool-aged children with center care experience are rated by mothers and teachers as having fewer externalizing problems on entering elementary school than their peers who were not in child care as preschoolers. Findings are discussed in relation to the literature on associations between different types of community-based child care and children's social behavior, particularly within low-income populations. Moreover, we use this study to highlight the relative strengths and weaknesses of each analytic method for addressing causal questions in developmental research. The abdominal flap of the rat has become a popular model with investigators. Recently, researchers have been reporting survival of skin flaps with varying blood supplies. We studied the viability of skin flaps on a consistent model with varied blood supply. An 8 x 9 cm flap was raised in 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The viability of the flaps could be studied in 25 rats. The survival of a pedicled flap based on the left inferior epigastric artery and vein was compared with that of a pedicled flap with enhanced venous drainage. The survival of a venous flap based on the paired inferior epigastric veins and the paired long thoracic veins was compared with that of an arterialized venous flap. A composite graft was used as a control for all groups. A qualitatively improved survival was found in the pedicled venous-enhanced group (66 percent) compared with the pedicled flaps (56 percent) (p > 0.05). An improved survival was found in the arterialized venous flap (57 percent) compared with the venous flap (40 percent) (p < 0.05). All flaps had improved survival compared with the composite graft (0.6 percent) (p < 0.05). 相似文献
