We study the accuracy and uncertainty of single-shot nonresonant laser-induced thermal acoustics measurements of the speed of sound and the thermal diffusivity in unseeded atmospheric air from electrostrictive gratings as a function of the laser power settings. For low pump energies, the measured speed of sound is too low, which is due to the influence of noise on the numerical data analysis scheme. For pump energies comparable to and higher than the breakdown energy of the gas, the measured speed of sound is too high. This is an effect of leaving the acoustic limit, and instead creating finite-amplitude density perturbations. The measured thermal diffusivity is too large for high noise levels but it decreases below the predicted value for high pump energies. The pump energy where the error is minimal coincides for the speed of sound and for the thermal diffusivity measurements. The errors at this minimum are 0.03% and 1%, respectively. The uncertainties for the speed of sound and the thermal diffusivity decrease monotonically with signal intensity to 0.25% and 5%, respectively.  相似文献

The demand for RNs in nursing homes will continue to intensify into the next century as the population of older adults with complex care needs continues to grow. 3. The findings of this study suggest that RN recruitment needs in long-term care include having enough qualified and dedicated staff, supportive and competent administration; competitive salaries and benefits; functional, attractive facilities; improved professional and public image; a caring, supportive environment; realistic regulations; decreased paperwork; progressive nurse practice models; and opportunities for educational advancement and career growth.  相似文献

Many uses of protein hydrolysates have been developed and applied to areas such as nutritional therapy, culture media, and the isolation of biologically active peptides. All these applications need carefully controlled and characterized hydrolysates. In order to produce such a type of hydrolysate, it is possible to use haemoglobin which is a very well defined and constant protein source. Enzymic hydrolysis of haemoglobin by pepsin was carried out at pilot-plant scale in an ultrafiltration reactor with mineral membranes. The object was to obtain a reproducible, decolorized, salt-free enzymic hydrolysate. Two types of membranes were tested having 10000 dalton (M5 type) and 20000 dalton (M4 type) cut-offs. Little significant difference was observed in the final products when both types of membranes were used. Reproducibility of hydrolysates was verified by amino acid analysis and gel filtration chromatography. The haemoglobin hydrolysates produced contained more than 90% protein and are especially suitable for fine applications.  相似文献

A recent series of articles purported that brief psychotherapy is mostly ineffective, that managed care's use of brief interventions constitutes invisible rationing, and that it is ethically mandatory to disclose this information to the patient. In response, the authors of this article demonstrate that health care rationing is multifaceted and universal in modern society, and patient disclosure is far from the simplistic, one-sided matter purported by the previous articles. It may even be deleterious. The authors advocate effective psychotherapy as a viable response to scarce resources and urge the profession to train future practitioners in the full range of emerging innovative and effective psychotherapies. Mathematical models considering motile bacterial transport within a geometrically restrictive cylindrical tube were developed. Two macroscopic transport parameters, the random motility coefficient as a self-diffusion coefficient of the cell population and the chemotactic velocity as a chemical-induced velocity, were derived. The three-dimensional cell balance equation was reduced to forms similar to Segel's one-dimensional phenomenological cell balance equations with additional modifications for bacteria-wall interactions. Two conceptually different approaches accounting for such interactions were presented. The first approach parallels treatments in the gas kinetic theory by viewing bacterial interactions with walls as collisions and subsequent diffusive/specular reflections, which led to the Bosanquet formula for the bacterial diffusion coefficient. Based on the experimental observation that bacterial swimming motion is guided by a straight tube, the second approach considered modifications in the bacterial swimming orientation as a consequence of various long-range interactions with the tube surface. A phenomenological turning model capable of aligning bacterial motion along a tube axis was proposed. The model predicts that under the geometrical restriction of a small cylindrical tube, the macroscopic bacterial transport resulting from the proposed turning model can exhibit behavior that ranges from dimensionally reduced diffusion to pure wave propagation, depending on the influence of the tube diameter on the reversal probability in the bacterial swimming motion. Our theoretical model provides explicit equations that explain how such a transition can occur. The predicted results were then qualitatively compared with experimental data from the literature. As a preliminary comparison, we concluded that bacterial transport in cylindrical tubes of diameter 10 micrometers remains in the mode of a dimensionally reduced diffusion, and shifts to a wave motion when the tube diameter decreases to 6 micrometers.  相似文献

Distribution of markers of local cell-mediated immunity was examined in oral tumors exhibiting different histological stages of differentiation. Using a RT-PCR-based semiquantitative technique we determined levels of Langerhans cells, CD4- and CD8-positive T-cells, macrophages/NK cells, beta2-microglobulin and IFN-gamma mRNAs from tissue biopsies. A positive correlation was found between levels of these immunological markers and the tumor differentiation stage. Since tumor differentiation may correlate with the prognosis and response to various treatment modalities, our results may be useful clinically.  相似文献

Ecological and physiological effects of the sulphate-reducing bacterium (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans on other intestinal organisms were investigated in anaerobic chemostats (dilution rate approximately 0.2 h-1). Reproducible defined bacterial communities were used in these experiments, comprising 14 different saccharolytic and amino acid fermenting species: Bifidobacterium longum, Bif. adolescentis, Bif. pseudolongum, Bif. infantis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Bact. vulgatus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecalis, Ent. faecium, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, Cl. butyricum, Cl. innocuum, Cl. bifermentans. Lactobacillus and Cl. bifermentans populations never rose above minimum detection limits (log10 2.0 and 4.0, respectively) under the experimental conditions employed in these studies. Inclusion of Des. desulfuricans in bacterial cultures (c. log10 8.4 viable cells ml-1) resulted in marked reductions (i.e. greater than 1 log) in planktonic cell population densities of several species, particularly Bif. longum, Cl. perfringens and Bif. pseudolongum. The two bacteroides species were unaffected by Des. desulfuricans, while numbers of Cl. butyricum increased. Extensive wall growth developed in the SRB culture, consisting mainly of Des. desulfuricans (log10 9.2 viable cells ml-1), Bact. thetaiotaomicron and Bact. vulgatus, with lesser numbers of facultative anaerobes, Cl. perfringens and Bif. longum. Wall growth was associated with a reduction in planktonic cell mass and increased acid production by the cultures. Chemotaxonomic study of chemostat microbiotas, on the basis of cellular fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analyses, showed the existence of characteristic bacteroides (C15) and bifidobacterial (C18) markers, but desulfovibrio markers (i-C15:0, C16:0, i-C17:1) could be identified. The metabolic activities of saccharolytic organisms were altered in the SRB chemostat, including synthesis of a number of hydrolytic enzymes involved in carbohydrate breakdown, such as alpha-galactosidase, alpha-glucosidase and beta-galactosidase, together with several mucinolytic enzymes. High concentrations of sulphide (8.2 mmol 1-1) were detected in the SRB chemostat, suggesting that this metabolite may have been inhibitory to some species. Saccharolytic organisms growing in the SRB fermenter utilized more starch, but less galactose-containing polymers, which correlated with the observed glycosidase activities. Profound differences were also recorded with respect to fermentation product formation in the chemostats, where a major switch to acetate production occurred in the SRB culture, with concomitant reductions in propionate, butyrate and lactate, which is an important electron donor for desulfovibrios.  相似文献
