The effectiveness of detecting melanoma by measuring the intracellular fluorescein fluorescent polarization (IFFP) of patients' SCM (structuredness of the cytoplasmic matrix)-responding lymphocytes was examined. SCM-responding lymphocytes from 46 melanoma patients and 32 healthy volunteers were labeled with fluorescein diacetate and challenged with different stimuli, and the resulting polarization was determined. The polarizations (P) obtained upon stimulation with nothing (P-0), encephalitogenic factor (P-EF), phytohaemagglutinin (P-PHA), or melanoma antigen (P-MEL), and the ratios RR(ef) (P-EF/P-PHA) and RR(mel) (P-MEL/P-PHA) were lower for SCM-responding lymphocytes from the patients as a group than for those of the controls. The specificity and sensitivity of the IFFP tests (using cutoff values) to detect melanoma were 90.6 and 73.9%, respectively. The IFFP tests may facilitate the discrimination between melanoma patients and healthy subjects, and may be used in follow-up of patients with melanoma. 相似文献

Four-wave mixing (FWM) is the most serious fiber nonlinearity associated with low-input optical power levels in long-haul multichannel optical systems employing dispersion-shifted fiber. To reduce the crosstalk due to FWM, a generalized suboptimum unequally spaced channel allocation (S-USCA) technique is proposed and investigated. Even though the developed technique is useful in combating FWM crosstalk in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) lightwave systems with up to 12 channels, its main virtue is in designing multichannel WDM lightwave systems with more than 12 channels. Comparisons of power penalty due to FWM between equal channel spacing (ECS) systems and the S-USCA systems are presented. It is shown that for an intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system operating in an optical bandwidth of 16 nm with 0 dBm (1 mW) peak optical input power per channel, while a conventional ECS WDM system with 0.84-nm channel spacing cannot even achieve a bit-error rate (BER)=10-9, the suboptimum technique developed in this paper, for the same minimum channel spacing, can achieve a BER=10-9 with an FWM crosstalk power of less than 1 dB at the worst channel in a 20-channel WDM system 相似文献

The compression of a paper web in a calender nip has been simulated using the finite element method. The mechanical properties of the paper were allowed to vary in the thickness and machine directions of the web. This was done in order to model the influence of temperature gradients as well as density variations (due to the presence of fibre floes) on the deformation behaviour in the nip. Paper was assumed to be an elastic-plastic material exhibiting strain hardening. The yielding behaviour was governed by the Drucker-Prager yield condition. Simulations of the deformation behaviour when paper was subjected to a temperature gradient, clearly revealed that the deformation gradually became more concentrated towards the surface layers as the temperature of the surface increased. This is in accordance with experimental results which indicate that temperature-gradient calendering promotes the surface properties, whereas the bulk of the structure is preserved. Modelling the deformation behaviour of a structure containing density variations reveals that the paper may contain an inhomogeneous strain distribution after unloading, i.e. after passage through the nip. 相似文献

A floating-gate MOSFET device that can be used as a precision analog memory for neural network LSIs is described. This device has two floating gates. One is a charge-injection gate with a Fowler-Nordheim tunnel junction, and the other is a charge-storage gate that operates as a MOSFET floating gate. The gates are connected by high resistance, and the charge-injection gate is small so that its capacitance is much less than that of the charge-storage gate. By applying control pulses to the charge-injection gate, it is possible to charge and discharge the MOSFET floating gate in order to modify the MOSFET current with high resolution over 10 b. PURPOSE: There are different techniques of boost irradiation in the treatment of patients with anal carcinoma. A new system of applicators is presented, which can be used for an intracavitary afterloading therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three different applicators are available, the first with a central catheter (K1), a second with 5 semicircular fixed catheters (K2) and an eccentric shield, a third with 8 circular fixed catheters and a central shield (K3). RESULTS: The adequate choice of applicator and catheters takes into consideration the individual localisation and extension of anal carcinoma in planning therapy. Thus, in circular growing tumors, an irradiation of the whole circumference of the anal canal is possible. In non-circular growing tumors, the dose applied in the non-affected part of the anal canal can be reduced to a quarter of the dose applied at the tumor. CONCLUSION: The new system of intracavitary afterloading therapy is a good alternative to previous techniques of boost irradiation in the treatment of anal carcinoma.
