Recent advent of additive manufacturing potentiates the fabrication of microchannels, albeit with limitations in resolution of printed structures, freedom of geometry, and choice of printable materials. Herein, a method is developed by sacrificial molding to fabricate microchannels in various polymer matrices and geometries. This method allows for rapid fabrication of 3D microchannels and channels harboring intricate in‐channel features. The method uses commercially available fused deposition modeling 3D printer and filament made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Mechanically stable molds are fabricated for 3D microchannels that can be completely removed in water. Importantly, the PVA mold is stable and resilient in hydrogels despite being hygroscopic. Perfusion channels are fabricated in biocompatible substrates such as gelatin and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. Fabrication of the network of 3D multilayer microchannels is demonstrated by preassembling sacrificial molds from modular pieces of molds. Intricate staggered‐herringbones grooves (SHGs) are also fabricated within microchannels to produce micromixers. The versatility and resilience of the method developed here is advantageous for biological and chemical applications that require 3D configurations of microchannels in various matrices, which would not be compatible with fabrication by direct 3D printing and softlithography.  相似文献

The wearable device can be a key link between health care and big data and analytics (BDA). The benefits of BDA in health care have been widely acknowledged, but the uncertainty of the implementation of BDA has led some firms to hesitate in adopting this technology. In this research, we are keen to answer the key questions of whether the wearable device firms would adopt the BDA strategy, and how much effort they would put into it. We propose a competition model between the wearable device firms with and without BDA strategies, and consider the consumer’s preference towards BDA and network effects. Our model demonstrates that the investment on BDA directly affects the firm’s equilibrium price, market share and profit and at the same time, this strategy also affects the rival’s performances. When the firm with BDA strategy adopts different competition strategy: conservative or expansive, the outcomes of market are different. We also find that different market structures, fully covered and partially covered, have different impacts on the firms’ competition when the consumers have heterogeneous preference on BDA strategy.  相似文献

Statistical design of experiments (DOE) is widely used today for process and product characterization and optimization. Owing to cost and time considerations, sometimes only a minimum number of experimental runs can be conducted, with added challenges in analysis when the experimental outcomes cannot be measured on a continuous scale and are expressed only in qualitative terms such as ‘excellent’, ‘satisfactory’ and ‘poor’: such outcomes are variously described as ‘categorical’, ‘attribute’, ‘qualitative’, ‘discrete’ or ‘counted’ in nature. This paper offers practical techniques of handling small experiments with such non‐standard DOE response data which are otherwise impossible to analyze by standard statistical software. The suggested procedures, built upon what is called a Likelihood Transfer Function (LTF), do not require complex data analysis but would yield results consistent with the constraints of experimental conditions as well as the objectives of stakeholders. Human computation games (HCGs) utilise human intelligence for the purpose of problem solving through games. Recently, HCGs have increased in popularity within various application areas. A proper system of describing such games is necessary in order to obtain a better understanding of the current body of work and identify new opportunities for future research directions. To date, however, there is little research conducted in understanding how such games could be classified in a systematic manner. Past classification schemes rely either on quality or entertainment aspects of these games. In order to have a deeper understanding of such games, this study argues that they should be classified via different dimensions. As a starting point, this paper reviews existing literature on HCGs and then develops a typology consisting of 12 dimensions and related strategies. This typology provides a holistic view of HCGs, and provides a common understanding of the domain among researchers and designers. The typology will help researchers to better understand the nature and consequences of HCGs, and designers better identify strengths and weaknesses of different strategies for each dimension, thus facilitating the creation of entertaining and effective HCGs.  相似文献

Higher ordered structures of nanofibers, including nanofiber‐based yarns and cables, have a variety of potential applications, including wearable health monitoring systems, artificial tendons, and medical sutures. In this study, twisted assemblies of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene (PVDF‐TrFe), and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers were fabricated via a modified electrospinning setup, consisting of a rotating cone‐shaped copper collector, two syringe pumps, and two high voltage power supplies. The fiber diameters and twist angles varied as a function of the rotary speed of the collector. Mechanical testing of the yarns revealed that PVDF‐TrFe and PCL yarns have a higher strain‐to‐failure than PAN yarns, reaching 307% for PCL nanoyarns. For the first time, the porosity of nanofiber yarns was studied as a function of twist angle, showing that PAN nanoyarns are more porous than PCL yarns. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Glycan microarrays are useful tools for lectin glycan profiling. The use of a glycan microarray based on evanescent‐field fluorescence detection was herein further extended to the screening of lectin inhibitors in competitive experiments. The efficacy of this approach was tested with 2/3′‐mono‐ and 2,3′‐diaromatic type II lactosamine derivatives and galectins as targets and was validated by comparison with fluorescence anisotropy proposed as an orthogonal protein interaction measurement technique. We showed that subtle differences in the architecture of the inhibitor could be sensed that pointed out the preference of galectin‐3 for 2′‐arylamido derivatives over ureas, thioureas, and amines and that of galectin‐7 for derivatives bearing an α substituent at the anomeric position of glucosamine. We eventually identified a diaromatic oxazoline as a highly specific inhibitor of galectin‐3 versus galectin‐1 and galectin‐7.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was grafted onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Composites of PMMA-grafted MWNTs and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) were prepared by solution casting from tetrahydrofuran. Since PMMA is miscible with SAN, the two polymers mix intimately to facilitate the dispersion of PMMA-grafted MWNTs in the SAN matrix. The intimate mixing is evidenced by the transparency of the composites. The incorporation of PMMA-grafted MWNTs to SAN (effective MWNT content=0.5-2 wt%) leads to increases in storage modulus at 40 °C, Young's modulus, tensile strength, ultimate strain, and toughness by 90, 51, 99, 184 and 614%, respectively. Such simultaneous increases in stiffness, strength, ductility and toughness of a polymer by rigid fillers are rarely observed.  相似文献

A water-soluble two-arm fullerene-containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was synthesized through isocyanate-hydroxy condensation reaction with fullerenol as a molecular core and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. The aggregation behavior of the resulting amphiphilic polymer in water, THF, and DMF, was studied by gel permeation chromatography, laser light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The polymer forms spherical aggregates with an aggregation number around 540-1020.  相似文献

We develop a mathematical model of solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell with anode CO kinetics, which is essentially a model that marrying the work of Bernardi and Verbrugge (J. Electrochem. Soc. 139 (1992) 2477) with that of Springer et al. (J. Electrochem. Soc. 148 (2001) A11). Two cases of study were carried out. First, the water self-sufficiency of fuel cell operation was conducted under different current density, temperature, pressure differential across the membrane-electrode-assembly (MEA), hydraulic permeability and electro-kinetic permeability. Comparison of superficial water velocities in the MEA under the effect of different current density with those from Bernardi and Verbrugge was conducted. Results showed that, treating the catalyst layers as interfaces instead of regions as simplified by Bernardi and Verbrugge, would significantly underestimate the water velocities in the MEA and the error is particularly large at high current density operations. Second, the effect of CO poisoning of fuel cell was presented in terms on cell polarization. The prediction covered 0, 25, 50, 100 and 250 ppm of CO concentration in hydrogen feedstock and results were validated by experimental data obtained from Springer et al. The trends of anode polarization curve due to CO poisoning were explained.  相似文献

Summary Blends of poly(1-vinylimidazole) (PVI) and poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) were cast from ethanol or N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). All the blends are miscible based on the single glass transition temperature (Tg) criterion. The Tg values of the blends are higher than those calculated from linear additivity rule. Blends cast from ethanol show a larger positive deviation than those cast from DMF. The Tg-composition curves can be fitted by the Kwei equation. FTIR studies show the existence of a strong hydrogen-bonding interaction between PVI and PVPh.  相似文献
