Call admission control schemes under generalized processor sharing scheduling

Provision of Quality‐of‐Service (QoS) guarantees is an important and challenging issue in the design of integrated‐services packet networks. Call admission control is an integral part of the challenge and is closely related to other aspects of networks such as service models, scheduling disciplines, traffic characterization and QoS specification. In this paper we provide a theoretical framework within which call admission control schemes with multiple statistical QoS guarantees can be constructed for the Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) scheduling discipline. Using this framework, we present several admission control schemes for both session‐based and class‐based service models. The theoretical framework is based on recent results in the statistical analysis of the GPS scheduling discipline and the theory of effective bandwidths. Both optimal schemes and suboptimal schemes requiring less computational effort are studied under these service models. The QoS metric considered is loss probability. Frontal brain activation in repressors and nonrepressors.

Assessed whether resting anterior asymmetry would discriminate individual differences in repressive-defensive coping styles. In 2 sessions, resting electroencephalogram was recorded from female adults during 8 60-sec baselines. Ss were classified as repressors or nonrepressors on the basis of scores on the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MC), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). In midfrontal and lateral frontal sites, repressors demonstrated relative left hemisphere activation when compared with other groups. The MC, but not the STAI or the BDI, contributed unique variance to frontal asymmetry. Relative left frontal activation may be linked to a self-enhancing regulatory style that promotes lowered risk for psychopathology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Models of high velocity impact phenomena

Models of craters formed by impacts at velocities of up to 24.5 km/sec have been computed using the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics, MESA, EPIC and CALE codes. These modeling efforts are compared to data obtained from the Hypervelocity Microparticle Impact project at Los Alamos using the van de Graaff accelerator. A factor of 5 increase in yield strength was needed to account for high strain rate effects and to match the data. Structure in the data is addressed by using crater volume instead of crater diameter cubed. Detailed code comparisons were made between the four codes with good agreement found.     

Flash memory under cosmic and alpha irradiation

Neutron and proton irradiation to simulate cosmic ray jeopardy were used to establish that NOR Flash memory (conventional floating polySi gate or ONO floating gate MirrorBit) soft error failure rate (cross section) is 3-5 orders of magnitude better than SRAM. Flash memory soft error rate for a given dose of alpha particle irradiation is much less than for the same dose from simulated cosmic rays.     

A Multinational Survey of the Quality of Carbamazepine Tablets

The results of a multinational survey of the quality of carbamazepine tablets are reported. A total of 22 laboratories in nineteen countries worldwide participated in the study conducted under the auspices of the Official Laboratories and Medicines Control Services (OLMCS) Section of FIP. The results of tests conducted on 86 samples representing at least 34 different products, comprising the innovator's product Tegretol, 13 other branded products and 20 generic products, are presented. Most products fulfilled the requirements of pharmacopoeial quality standards. However, there were marked differences in dissolution behaviour which suggest that not all products are bioequivalent with each other. Most of the products tested would not comply with a requirement for the percentage of carbamazepine released at 15 minutes, that is proposed for inclusion in the USP monograph for Carbamazepine Tablets.     

Differential effects of hippocampal ablations on dispositional and representational memory in the rat.

Long-Evans rats with electrolytic hippocampal ablations exhibited chronic impairment in performance on a spatial delayed nonmatching-to-sample task in the arms of a T-maze. The same rats exhibited only mild deficits, which disappeared with practice, in dispositional memory-dependent discrimination in the stem. Both types of discrimination were learned rapidly preoperatively with no marked positive or negative interaction between types of discrimination. The present results suggest that hippocampal lesions in rats have far more serious consequences on the performance of representational memory-dependent tasks than similar lesions in monkeys. In agreement with our past studies, the present experiment demonstrated that dispositional and representational memory systems in rodents have at least partially distinct anatomical substrates in brain. Depressive symptoms erode self-esteem in severe mental illness: A three-wave, cross-lagged study.

Vulnerability, scar, and reciprocal-relations models of depressive symptoms and self-esteem were compared among people with severe mental illness (SMI; N=260) participating in a partnership-based intervention study. Assessments were conducted at baseline, midway through the intervention (after 4 months), and at termination (after 9 months). Cross-lagged, structural equation modeling analyses revealed that participants' baseline depressive symptoms predicted a decrease in self-esteem in the first 4 months but not in the subsequent 5 months of participation. Exploratory regression analyses indicated that improved social functioning buffered this deleterious effect of depressive symptoms. These findings, which are consistent with the scar model, highlight the fragile nature of the self and the importance of social functioning in recovery from SMI. Ceramic-matrix composites fatigue and fracture

Fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) have been shown to exhibit excellent high-temperature properties. There are some published data on the mechanical properties of Nicalon fiber-reinforced composites with various matrices, but much of the work was performed in bending, and there is little information on the failure modes in textile-reinforced CMCs, especially under cyclic-loading conditions. This article is an interim report on research that examines the tensile deformation, fracture, smoothbar fatigue, and fatigue crack-growth behavior of several CMCs. Unidirectional, two-dimensional eight-harness satin weave, and three-dimensional angle-interlock weave Nicalon fiber architectures infiltrated with polymers and then pyrolized were investigated and are compared with similar experiments on Nicalon-reinforced calcium-silicate glass-ceramic-matrix composites.
