The ethanol steam reforming reaction carried out in a Pd-based tubular membrane reactor has been modelled via a finite element code. The model considers the membrane tube divided into finite volume elements where the mass balances for both lumen and shell sides are carried out accordingly to the reaction and permeation kinetics. Especially, a simplified “power law” has been applied for the reaction kinetics: the comparison with experimental data obtained by using three different kinds of catalyst (Ru, Pt and Ni based) permitted defining the coefficients of the kinetics expression as well as to validate the model. Based on the Damkohler–Peclet analysis, the optimization of the membrane reformer has been also approached.  相似文献

Simplified Approach for the Seismic Response of a Pile Foundation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Pseudostatic approaches for the seismic analysis of pile foundations are attractive for practicing engineers because they are simple when compared to difficult and more complex dynamic analyses. To evaluate the internal response of piles subjected to earthquake loading, a simplified approach based on the “p-y” subgrade reaction method has been developed. The method involves two main steps: first, a site response analysis is carried out to obtain the free-field ground displacements along the pile. Next, a static load analysis is carried out for the pile, subjected to the computed free-field ground displacements and the static loading at the pile head. A pseudostatic push over analysis is adopted to simulate the behavior of piles subjected to both lateral soil movements and static loadings at the pile head. The single pile or the pile group interact with the surrounding soil by means of hyperbolic p-y curves. The solution derived first for the single pile, was extended to the case of a pile group by empirical multipliers, which account for reduced resistance and stiffness due to pile-soil-pile interaction. Numerical results obtained by the proposed simplified approach were compared with experimental and numerical results reported in literature. It has been shown that this procedure can be used successfully for determining the response of a pile foundation to “inertial” loading caused by the lateral forces imposed on the superstructure and “kinematic” loading caused by the ground movements developed during an earthquake.  相似文献

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) frequently affects both the basic and the superordinate components of attention; deficits vary according to patient age. This study evaluated the efficacy of a specific remediation intervention for attention. Sixty-five TBI patients (aged 6?18 years) with attention deficit were assessed at baseline and at 1-year follow-up: 40 patients received attention-specific neuropsychological training for 6 months, and the control group comprised 25 patients. Cognitive assessment included a Wechsler Intelligence Scale (e.g., A. Orsini, 1993) and the Continuous Performance Test II (CPT II; C. K. Conners, 2000). The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS; S. Sparrow, D. Balla & D. V. Cicchetti, 1984) was administered to assess the treatment's ecological validity. At baseline, all patients presented with a mild intellectual disability and pathological scores on the CPT II. At follow-up, significant differences were found between the 2 groups on the CPT II and VABS: The clinical group improved more than the control group. Specific remediation training for attention, including a combination of a process-specific approach and metacognitive strategies, significantly improved attention performance. Radon (222Rn) concentration was evaluated in shops of the Savona Province, Italy, between summer 2002 and winter 2002-2003. The main characteristics of each shops were recorded through a questionnaire investigating the ventilation rate and factors related to 222Rn precursors in the soil and the construction materials. The main variables that were related to radon concentration were the following: age of the building, level of the shop above ground, season of the year, wind exposure, active windows, and type of heating system. Shops equipped with individual air heating/conditioning systems exhibited radon concentrations that were three times higher than those of shops heated by centralized furnaces. Our data indicate that the level of pollution in the shops was of medium level, with an expected low impact on the salespersons' health. Only in wintertime, the action level of 200 Bq m(-3) for the confined environment was reached in 10 shops equipped with individual air heating/conditioning systems.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a system-level design methodology for the efficient exploration of the architectural parameters of the memory sub-systems, from the energy-delay joint perspective. The aim is to find the best configuration of the memory hierarchy without performing the exhaustive analysis of the parameters space. The target system architecture includes the processor, separated instruction and data caches, the main memory, and the system buses. To achieve a fast convergence toward the near-optimal configuration, the proposed methodology adopts an iterative local-search algorithm based on the sensitivity analysis of the cost function with respect to the tuning parameters of the memory sub-system architecture. The exploration strategy is based on the Energy-Delay Product (EDP) metric taking into consideration both performance and energy constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology has been demonstrated through the design space exploration of a real-world case study: the optimization of the memory hierarchy of a MicroSPARC2-based system executing the set of Mediabench benchmarks for multimedia applications. Experimental results have shown an optimization speedup of 2 orders of magnitude with respect to the full search approach, while the near-optimal system-level configuration is characterized by a distance from the optimal full search configuration in the range of 2%.  相似文献

Rett syndrome caused by MECP2 variants is characterized by a heterogenous clinical spectrum accounted for in 60% of cases by hot-spot variants. Focusing on the most frequent variants, we generated in vitro iPSC-neurons from the blood of RTT girls with p.Arg133Cys and p.Arg255*, associated to mild and severe phenotype, respectively, and of an RTT male harboring the close to p.Arg255*, p.Gly252Argfs*7 variant. Truncated MeCP2 proteins were revealed by Western blot and immunofluorescence analysis. We compared the mutant versus control neurons at 42 days for morphological parameters and at 120 days for electrophysiology recordings, including girls’ isogenic clones. A precocious reduced morphological complexity was evident in neurons with truncating variants, while in p.Arg133Cys neurons any significant differences were observed in comparison with the isogenic wild-type clones. Reduced nuclear size and branch number show up as the most robust biomarkers. Patch clamp recordings on mature neurons allowed the assessment of cell biophysical properties, V-gated currents, and spiking pattern in the mutant and control cells. Immature spiking, altered cell capacitance, and membrane resistance of RTT neurons, were particularly pronounced in the Arg255* and Gly252Argfs*7 mutants. The overall results indicate that the specific markers of in vitro cellular phenotype mirror the clinical severity and may be amenable to drug testing for translational purposes.  相似文献

Meiosis is the unique division of germ cells resulting in the recombination of the maternal and paternal genomes and the production of haploid gametes. In mammals, it begins during the fetal life in females and during puberty in males. In both cases, entering meiosis requires a timely switch from the mitotic to the meiotic cell cycle and the transition from a potential pluripotent status to meiotic differentiation. Revealing the molecular mechanisms underlying these interrelated processes represents the essence in understanding the beginning of meiosis. Meiosis facilitates diversity across individuals and acts as a fundamental driver of evolution. Major differences between sexes and among species complicate the understanding of how meiosis begins. Basic meiotic research is further hindered by a current lack of meiotic cell lines. This has been recently partly overcome with the use of primordial-germ-cell-like cells (PGCLCs) generated from pluripotent stem cells. Much of what we know about this process depends on data from model organisms, namely, the mouse; in mice, the process, however, appears to differ in many aspects from that in humans. Identifying the mechanisms and molecules controlling germ cells to enter meiosis has represented and still represents a major challenge for reproductive medicine. In fact, the proper execution of meiosis is essential for fertility, for maintaining the integrity of the genome, and for ensuring the normal development of the offspring. The main clinical consequences of meiotic defects are infertility and, probably, increased susceptibility to some types of germ-cell tumors. In the present work, we report and discuss data mainly concerning the beginning of meiosis in mammalian female germ cells, referring to such process in males only when pertinent. After a brief account of this process in mice and humans and an historical chronicle of the major hypotheses and progress in this topic, the most recent results are reviewed and discussed.  相似文献

We consider a thermodynamic consistent microscale model from for the transport processes of lithium ion concentration and charge in lithium ion batteries. A fully convergent finite element discretisation in space of arbitrary order with uniform time stepping is discussed for this strongly nonlinear coupled system of nonlinear PDEs. We analyse the error for higher order finite element methods on a representative geometry, which shows already the difficulties when dealing with a realistic microstructure. Moreover we derive explicit analytical formulas for the exact solutions for the elliptic subproblem and the complete time-dependent problem for a non-trivial geometry. These results show the need for appropriate boundary approximations as well as adaptive refinement strategies. In addition we incorporate a two-phase intercalation model for the electrode. This moving boundary model, also called Stefan problem, has also been implemented. Simulations of our battery model including the two-phase model will be shown.  相似文献
