Thermo-Sensitive Ba0.64Sr0.36TiO3 Thin Film Capacitors for Dielectric Type Uncooled Infrared Sensors

Ba_0.64Sr_0.36TiO₃ (BST) thin films are prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO₂/Si₃N₄/SiO₂/Si substrates by a sol-gel method. Thermo-sensitive BST thin film capacitors with a Metal-Ferroelectrics-Metal (M-F(BST)-M) structure are fabricated as the active elements of dielectric type uncooled infrared sensors. XRD are employed to analyze the crystallographic structures of the films. AFM observations reveal a smooth and dense surface of the films with an average grain size of about 35 nm. Rapid temperature annealing (RTA) process is a very efficient way to improve crystallization quality. The preferable annealing temperature is 800°C for 1 min. The butterfly shaped C-V curves of the capacitors indicate the films have a ferroelectric nature. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the films at 100 kHz are 450 and 0.038, respectively. At 25°C, where the thermo-sensitive capacitors work, the temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (TCD) is about 5.9 %/°C. These results indicate that the capacitors with sol-gel derived BST thin films are promising to develop dielectric type uncooled infrared sensors.

Spectral shape tunable band-rejection filter using a long-period fiber grating with divided coil heaters

We have developed a new type of tunable band rejection filter, which provides high spectral-shaping flexibility in a wide tuning range. The filter consists of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with divided coil heaters. Each of the divided coil heaters is controlled individually to adjust a temperature distribution along the LPFG and to modify the spectral shape of the LPFG filter. The tunable band rejection filter is demonstrated to function properly when applied as an erbium-doped fiber amplifier gain-flattening filter.

Planar lightwave integrated circuits with embedded actives for board and substrate level optical signal distribution

This paper explores design options for planar optical interconnections integrated onto boards, discusses fabrication options for both beam turning and embedded interconnections to optoelectronic devices, describes integration processes for creating embedded planar optical interconnections, and discusses measurement results for a number of integration schemes that have been demonstrated by the authors. In the area of optical interconnections with beams coupled to and from the board, the topics covered include integrated metal-coated polymer mirrors and volume holographic gratings for optical beam turning perpendicular to the board. Optical interconnections that utilize active thin film (approximately 1-5 /spl mu/m thick) optoelectronic components embedded in the board are also discussed, using both Si and high temperature FR-4 substrates. Both direct and evanescent coupling of optical signals into and out of the waveguide are discussed using embedded optical lasers and photodetectors.     

Mining predecessor–successor rules from DAG data

Data mining extracts implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from databases. Many approaches have been proposed to extract information, and one of the most important ones is finding association rules. Although a large amount of research has been devoted to this subject, none of it finds association rules from directed acyclic graph (DAG) data. Without such a mining method, the hidden knowledge, if any, cannot be discovered from the databases storing DAG data such as family genealogy profiles, product structures, XML documents, task precedence relations, and course structures. In this article, we define a new kind of association rule in DAG databases called the predecessor–successor rule, where a node x is a predecessor of another node y if we can find a path in DAG where x appears before y. The predecessor–successor rules enable us to observe how the characteristics of the predecessors influence the successors. An Analysis of Citation Counts of ETRI‐Invented US Patents

From its foundation until 2004, ETRI has registered over 1,000 US patents. This letter analyzes the characteristics of these patents and addresses the explanatory factors affecting their citation counts. For explanatory variables, research team related variables, invention specific variables, and geographical domain related variables are suggested. Zero‐altered count data models are used to test the impact of independent variables. A key finding is that technological cumulativeness, the scale of invention, outputs in the electronic field, and the degree of dependence on the US technology domain positively affect the citation counts of ETRI‐invented US patents. The magnitude of international presence appears to negatively affect the citation counts of ETRI‐invented US patents.
