The authors examined how mock jurors respond to the testimony of hearsay witnesses in trials of child sexual abuse. In Experiment 1, participants watched a highly realistic videotape of a sexual abuse trial. In one condition, the child victim/witness testified on her own behalf, in the hearsay condition, the child's mother testified in lieu of her daughter. Conviction rates were significantly higher in the child condition versus the hearsay condition. In Experiment 2, participants read a trial summary of a sexual abuse case where either the child testified on her own behalf or the child did not testify and hearsay testimony was given by either the child's mother, doctor, teacher, or neighbor. Conviction rates were significantly lower in the child condition versus each of the hearsay conditions but not when the neighbor testified as the hearsay witness. The impact of hearsay testimony may depend on the perceived credibility or prestige of the hearsay witness. Several theoretical reasons are given to resolve the discrepancies in these and other studies that examine the impact of hearsay testimony in trials of child sexual abuse. The effect of hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) and bacteriophage lambda lysozyme (LaL) in combination with high pressure (HP) treatment on the inactivation of four gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Shigella flexneri, Yersinia enterocolitica and Salmonella typhimurium), was studied in skim milk (pH 6.8; a(w) 0.997) and in banana juice (pH 3.8; a(w) 0.971). In the absence of lysozymes, S. flexneri was more sensitive to HP in milk than in banana juice, while the opposite was observed for the other three bacteria. In combination with HP treatment, LaL was more effective than HEWL on all bacteria in both milk and banana juice. Depending on the bacteria, inactivation levels in banana juice were increased from 0.4-2.7 log units by HP treatment alone to 3.6-6.5 log units in the presence of 224 U/ml LaL. Bacterial inactivation in milk was also enhanced by LaL but only by 0.5-2.1 log units. Under the experimental conditions used, LaL was more effective in banana juice than in milk, while the effectiveness of HEWL under the same conditions was not significantly affected by the food matrix. This effect could be ascribed to the low pH of the banana juice since LaL was also more effective on E. coli in buffer at pH 3.8 than at pH 6.8. Since neither LaL nor HEWL are enzymatically active at pH 3.8, we analysed bacterial lysis after HP treatment in the presence of these enzymes, and found that inactivation proceeds through a non-lytic mechanism at pH 3.8 and a lytic mechanism at pH 6.8. Based on these results, LaL may offer interesting perspectives for use as an extra hurdle in high pressure food preservation.  相似文献

A study has been made of the effects of pigeon pea starch obtained from the plant Cajanus cajan (L) Millisp. (family Fabaceae) and plantain starch obtained from the unripe fruit of Musa paradisiaca L. (family Musaceae) on the compressional, mechanical, and disintegration properties of paracetamol tablets in comparison with official corn starch BP. Analysis of compressional properties was done by using density measurements, and the Heckel and Kawakita equations, whereas the mechanical properties of the tablets were evaluated by using tensile strength (T--a measure of bond strength) and brittle fracture index (BFI--a measure of lamination tendency). The ranking for the mean yield pressure, P(y), for the formulations containing the different starches was generally corn < pigeon pea < plantain starch while the ranking for P(k), an inverse measure of the amount of plasticity, was pigeon pea < plantain < corn starch, which indicated that formulations containing corn starch generally exhibited the fastest onset of plastic deformation, whereas those formulations containing pigeon pea starch exhibited the highest amount of plastic deformation during tableting. The tensile strength of the tablets increased with increase in concentration of the starches while the Brittle Fracture Index decreased. The ranking for T was pigeon pea > plantain > corn starch while the ranking for BFI was corn > plantain > pigeon pea starch. The bonding capacity of the formulations was in general agreement with the tensile strength results. The disintegration time (DT) of the formulation increased with concentration of plantain and corn starches but decreased with concentration of pigeon pea starch. The general ranking of DT values was plantain < pigeon pea < corn starch. Notably, formulations containing pigeon pea starch exhibited the highest bond strength and lowest brittleness, suggesting the usefulness of pigeon pea starch in producing strong tablets with minimal lamination tendency. Plantain starch, on the other hand, would be more useful where faster disintegration of tablet is desired. The results show that the starches could be useful in various formulations depending on the intended use of the tablets with the implication that the experimental starches can be developed for commercial purposes.  相似文献

Changes in phosphorus (P) fractions and their plant-availability and downward movement in two strongly P fixing acidic Andosols (Allophanic and Pumice Soils) under Pinus radiata plantations in New Zealand were studied 2 years after triple superphosphate (TSP) and a phosphate rock (BGPR, origin Ben Guerir, Morocco) application, each at four rates, to determine the fate and plant availability of fertilizer-derived P in these soils. The rate of increase of the concentrations of the P fractions was highest for NaOH-Pi (inorganic P associated with Fe and Al oxides and allophane) when TSP was applied and highest for H2SO4-Pi (predominantly calcium phosphates or apatite-type P minerals) when BGPR was applied. The largest pool of soil P, the NaOH-Po (labile organic P), was unaffected by the P fertilizer applications. The rate of NaOH-Pi concentration increase was higher in the higher P fixing Allophanic Soil than in the Pumice Soil. Both types of fertilizers increased resin-Pi (Inorganic P freely available to the plant) and Bray-2 P concentrations but only the TSP application increased Olsen P concentration. Phosphorus derived from TSP and BGPR applications moved down to 10–20 cm soil depth within 2 years of application in the Pumice Soil, but did not move below 10 cm depth in the higher P fixing and less porous Allophanic Soil. The fertilizers significantly increased needle P concentrations 2, 3 and 4 years after fertilizer application, but did not have any significant effect on tree growth.  相似文献

We report a cluster of severe diarrheal disease caused by Vibrio mimicus infection among four persons who had consumed leftover crayfish the day after a private crayfish boil. Gastrointestinal illness caused by Vibrio mimicus has not been reported previously in Washington State. Three cases were laboratory confirmed by stool culture; using PCR, isolates were found to have ctx genes that encode cholera toxin (CT). Two of the cases were hospitalized under intensive care with a cholera-like illness. The illnesses were most likely caused by cross-contamination of cooked crayfish with uncooked crayfish; however, V. mimicus was not isolated nor were CT genes detected by PCR in leftover samples of frozen crayfish. Clinicians should be aware that V. mimicus can produce CT and that V. mimicus infection can cause severe illness.  相似文献

Electrets are dielectric materials possessing a quasi-permanent electric charge or dipole polarization. Frequently, the electrets are adversely affected by environmental temperature and humidity, leading to charge instability, which severely restricts applications. Here we show that silicon nanowires (SiNWs) via modified oxide-assisted growth can surprisingly serve as electrets with permanent electrostatic charges and surface potential up to 7.7 mV. Significantly, the extraordinary electret behavior of SiNWs is extremely robust, remaining stable against immersion in water for over 2 months. The SiNWs were utilized to fabricate a nanogenerator, which yielded an output electrical power of 2.19 × 10(-11) W with a conversion efficiency of 2.2%. The nanogenerator consists of only one movable part, giving highly sustainable and stable output signals, and thus holds promise for various self-powered applications. The permanent electrostatic charges on SiNWs are attributed to the formation of α-quartz in SiNWs.  相似文献

In this report the correlation between the solution photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield and the fluorescence emission of individual semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is investigated. This is done by taking advantage of previously reported enhancement in the macroscopic quantum yield of water-soluble QDs capped with dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) when self-assembled with polyhistidine-appended proteins, and by using fluorescence coincidence analysis (FCA) to detect the presence of "bright" and "dark" single QDs in solution. This allows for changes in the fraction of the two QD species to be tracked as the PL yield of the solution is progressively altered. The results clearly indicate that in a dispersion of luminescent nanocrystals, "bright" (intermittently emitting) single QDs coexist with "permanently dark" (non-emitting) QDs. Furthermore, the increase in the fraction of emitting QDs accompanies the increase in the PL quantum yield of the solution. These findings support the idea that a dispersion of QDs consists of two optically distinct populations of nanocrystals--one is "bright" while the other is "dark;" and that the relative fraction of these two populations defines the overall PL yield.  相似文献

Campylobacter jejuni is the most frequently reported cause of foodborne illness in the United States, but its survival outside the host is poor. The objective of this research was to examine the formation and composition of biofilms by C. jejuni alone and within mixed bacterial populations from the poultry-processing environment. C. jejuni growth was assessed with four media, two temperatures, and two atmospheric conditions to develop culture methods for liquid media that would allow growth within the biofilms. Growth kinetics was followed at four cell densities to determine temporal compatibility within biofilm mixtures. Analysis of the biofilms by confocal laser scanning microscopy showed that C. jejuni formed a biofilm when incubated without other bacteria. The average surface area of stainless steel covered by C. jejuni increased by 50% from 24 to 48 h, remained level to 96 h, and then decreased by 88% by 168 h. C. jejuni and mixed bacterial populations formed biofilms during incubation periods of up to 7 days. The area of the mixture was significantly greater than for C. jejuni alone at 24 h, was approximately the same at 48 h, and was significantly less by 168 h. When incubated with either of two initial inoculum densities of other bacteria, the number of C. jejuni was enhanced after 24 h. The intensity of fluorescence and cell viability were monitored by epifluorescence microscopy. This study provides the basis for studying interactions of Campylobacter spp. with other bacteria in the environment, which will aid in the design of effective intervention strategies.  相似文献
