The cover shows chemiresistors and mass‐sensitive vapor sensors coated with Au‐nanoparticle/dendrimer composites. The Au nanoparticles provide the film with electrical conductivity and the dendrimers control the chemical selectivity, as reported by Nadjedja Krasteva and co‐workers on p. 881. Analyte sorption follows a combined Henry–Langmuir model, and measurements reveal that sorption‐induced increase in film resistance scales linearly with the concentration of analyte sorbed in the film. The background shows a silicon wafer with lithographically defined microelectrode structures for chemiresistor fabrication. Films comprising Au nanoparticles and polyphenylene dendrimers (first and second generation) are deposited onto transducer substrates via layer‐by‐layer self‐assembly and characterized by atomic force microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Their sorption behavior is studied by measuring the uptake of solvents from the vapor phase with quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs). The resistance of the films is simultaneously monitored. Both sensor types, QCMs and chemiresistors, give qualitatively very similar response isotherms that are consistent with a combination of Henry‐ and Langmuir‐type sorption processes. The sorption‐induced increase in relative differential resistance scales linearly with the amount of analyte accumulated in the films. This result is in general agreement with an activated tunneling process for charge transport, if little swelling and only small changes in the permittivity of the film occur during analyte sorption (a first‐order approximation). The relative sensitivity of the films to different solvents decreases in the order toluene ≈ tetrachloroethylene > 1‐propanol ? water. Films containing the larger second‐generation dendrimers show higher sensitivity than films containing first‐generation dendrimers.  相似文献

Bacteriocin production by Enterococcus faecium FAIR-E 198, isolated from Greek Feta cheese, was studied in batch fermentations, under conditions simulating Feta cheese preparation. Maximum enterocin activity and growth rate was obtained in de Man-Rogosa-Sharpe (MRS) broth at 37 degrees C with controlled pH 6.5. The enterocin was produced throughout the growth phase of the microorganism, showing primary metabolite kinetics with a peak activity during the mid-exponential phase. The use of skimmed milk as substrate revealed low enterocin activity. When fermentations were performed in skimmed milk in the presence of rennet, CaCl2, and a mixed starter culture, no enterocin activity was observed, although the examined strain grew well under the above conditions. Finally, when E. faecium FAIR-E 198 was applied as adjunct starter in Feta cheese making, no enterocin activity was detected throughout ripening. Results obtained underline the frequently underestimated finding that in vitro production by novel bacteriocinogenic starter or co-cultures is no guarantee for in situ efficiency. It was concluded that the complex food environment thoroughly interferes with bacteriocin production levels.  相似文献

The activity of vagal motor neurons is influenced by sensory information transmitted to the brainstem. In particular, there is evidence that distention of the stomach increases activity of motor neurons in the dorsal vagal motor nucleus, whereas distention of the duodenum, small intestine, and colon reduces neuron firing. In this study, we determined 1) the response of vagal motor neurons to distention of the stomach and duodenum and 2) whether the response properties were associated with specific morphological features. Using the single-cell recording and iontophoretic injection technique, we identified four groups of vagal motor neurons affected by gastric and/or duodenal distention. Group 1 neurons responded to either gastric or duodenal stimulation. Neurons in groups 2, 3, and 4 were affected by both gastric and duodenal distention. Group 2 neurons were excited by duodenal distention and were inhibited by gastric distention. Group 3 neurons were inhibited by duodenal distention and were excited by gastric distention. Most neurons belonged to group 4. Neurons in this group were inhibited by both gastric and duodenal distention. Our analyses revealed that the neurons affected by both stimuli had distinctive structural features. Neurons in group 2 had the largest somata, the most dendritic branches, and the greatest cell surface area. Neurons in group 3 were the smallest and had the shortest dendritic length. In addition, we were able to demonstrate that the neurons in group 4 had a smaller total dendritic length and a smaller cell volume than neurons in group 2 and had more dendritic branch segments than neurons in group 3. These results suggest that morphological features are associated with specific response properties of vagal motor neurons.  相似文献

Videotaped 37 infants in face-to-face play with their mothers at 6, 13, and 26 wks of age. Analysis proceeded at 3 levels: (a) Ss' periods of attention toward the mothers significantly overlapped with the mothers' facially expressive behavior, especially as Ss grew older. Whereas the total proportion of time looking at mothers decreased, the time looking at them while they were on did not decrease. (b) Ss' Vocalizations, Smiles, and Mouth Openings clustered into "runs" (as described by previous investigators), but at 6 wks these occurred only when the mothers were on. By 26 wks of age, Ss' clusters of expression had become autonomous turns in a dialoglike exchange. (c) Analysis of contingent sequences following the onset of infant attention showed that with Ss 6 wks old, mothers' facial greetings—Nodding, Smiling, and so forth—were only rarely effective in eliciting expressive greetings, but without the mothers' greetings Ss almost never made such responses. With 13-wk-old Ss, mothers more easily elicited greetings, and some spontaneous (unelicited) greetings by Ss could also be seen. However, as correctly stated in the text and indicated throughout the rest of the article, men used the Internet significantly more than women. The correct correlation between total Internet use and gender in Table 1 should therefore be r = .14. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2006-03515-009.) Individuals who seek information on the Internet to cope with chronic illness may be vulnerable to misinformation and unfounded claims. This study examined the association between health-related coping and the evaluation of health information. Men (n = 347) and women (n = 72) who were living with HIV/AIDS and reported currently using the Internet completed measures assessing their Internet use. Health Web sites downloaded from the Internet were also rated for quality of information. HIV-positive adults commonly used the Internet to find health information (66%) and to learn about clinical trials (25%); they also talked to their physicians about information found online (24%). In a multivariate analysis, assigning higher credibility to unfounded Internet information was predicted by lower incomes, less education, and avoidant coping styles. People who cope by avoiding health information may be vulnerable to misinformation and unfounded claims that are commonly encountered on the Internet.
