Demand for silver engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is increasing rapidly in optoelectronic and in health and medical applications due to their antibacterial, thermal, electrical conductive, and other properties. The continued commercial up-scaling of ENM production and application needs to be accompanied by an understanding of the occupational health, public safety and environmental implications of these materials. There have been numerous in vitro studies and some in vivo studies of ENM toxicity but their results are frequently inconclusive. Some of the variability between studies has arisen due to a lack of consistency between experimental models, since small differences between test materials can markedly alter their behaviour. In addition, the propensity for the physicochemistry of silver ENMs to alter, sometimes quite radically, depending on the environment they encounter, can profoundly alter their bioreactivity. Consequently, it is important to accurately characterise the materials before use, at the point of exposure and at the nanomaterial-tissue, or “nanobio”, interface, to be able to appreciate their environmental impact. This paper reviews current literature on the pulmonary effects of silver nanomaterials. We focus our review on describing whether, and by which mechanisms, the chemistry and structure of these materials can be linked to their bioreactivity in the respiratory system. In particular, the mechanisms by which the physicochemical properties (e.g., aggregation state, morphology and chemistry) of silver nanomaterials change in various biological milieu (i.e., relevant proteins, lipids and other molecules, and biofluids, such as lung surfactant) and affect subsequent interactions with and within cells will be discussed, in the context not only of what is measured but also of what can be visualized.  相似文献

There is a growing demand for more cost-efficient production processes in Statistical Institutes. One way to address this need is to equip Statistical Information Systems (SIS) with the ability to automatically produce statistical data and metadata of high quality and deliver them to the user via the Internet. Current approaches, although provide for the storage of appropriate metadata, do not use process metadata for guiding the production process. In this paper we present an approach on creating SISs that permits metadata-guided statistical processing based on an object-based, statistical metadata model. The model is not domain specific and can accommodate both microdata and macrodata. We have equipped the model with a set of transformations that can be used to automatically manipulate data and metadata. We show the applicability of transformations with some examples using actual statistical data for R&D expenditures. Finally, we demonstrate how the presented framework can be exploited for the construction of a web site that offers ad hoc query capabilities to the users of statistical data.  相似文献

Clonal plants of three genotypes of Lotus corniculatus (cv Leo) were grown in eight controlled environments under combinations of two temperature regimes, two CO2 concentrations and two watering regimes. Condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins), in-vitro digestibility, initial rates of gas evolution (as an indicator of the initial rates of fermentation of the substrate), volatile fatty acid evolution, and non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) levels were determined in leaves, stems and roots at full flowering. Under control conditions (average midsummer conditions in the United Kingdom) the total condensed tannin content of leaves varied six-fold between genotypes but condensed tannin contents in stems and roots were similar. Condensed tannin levels were significantly increased in leaves and stems of all three genotypes by doubling the CO2 concentration while raising the temperature towards the optimum for growth significantly reduced condensed tannin levels. Drought stress significantly reduced condensed tannin levels in leaves and, particularly, in roots. Nutritive value was inversely related to condensed tannin levels in leaves and a negative relationship was observed between condensed tannin concentrations of more than 25–30 g kg−1 dry matter and the initial rates of gas evolution when subjected to in-vitro fermentation with rumen micro-organisms. In leaves, digestibility was significantly increased by drought and by increasing temperature but reduced by high CO2. In stems, digestibility was significantly increased by drought, but not significantly affected by increasing temperature, or by high CO2 alone. In roots, digestibility was significantly increased by drought, and decreased by increasing temperature or CO2. Increasing the growth temperature towards optimum growth reduced the content of NSC in all tissues with the greatest changes occurring in root tissue. Doubling the CO2 concentration increased NSC levels in leaves and stems with starch content more than doubled under high CO2 while, in roots, increased levels were only observed in combination with drought stress. There was a linear correlation between condensed tannin concentration and total NSC that was positive for leaves, neutral for stems and negative for roots. The relationship between carbohydrate levels and rates of gas production was negative for leaves and positive for stem and roots. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A method to determine safranal content based on non-polar solvent extraction followed by UV–Vis analysis available in the industry for quality control of saffron spice has been studied. Ultrasound-assisted extraction of safranal was carried out and optimised with respect to the solvent: diethyl ether, hexane and chloroform; the time of extraction; and the concentration of saffron in each organic solvent. Best extraction conditions were obtained when 20 g L?1 of saffron was extracted with chloroform for 15 min. Intra-laboratory validation of the optimised conditions and analysis by UV–Vis spectrophotometry showed satisfactory results in linearity, repeatability, intermediate precision and recovery. The limit of detection was 1 mg safranal kg?1 saffron and the limit of quantification was 3 mg safranal kg?1 saffron.  相似文献

Faster market integration of new energy technologies can be achieved by use of proper support mechanisms that will create favourable market conditions for such technologies. The best examples of support mechanisms presented in the last two decades have been the various schemes for the promotion of renewable energy sources (RES). In the EU, the most successful supporting schemes are feed-in tariffs which have significantly increased utilisation of renewable energy sources in Germany, Spain, Portugal, Denmark and many other EU countries. Despite the successful feed-in tariffs for RES promotion, in many cases RES penetration is limited by power system requirements linked to the intermittency of RES sources and technical capabilities of grids. These problems can be solved by implementation of energy storage technologies like reversible or pumped hydro, hydrogen, batteries or any other technology that can be used for balancing or dump load. In this paper, feed-in tariffs for various energy storage technologies are discussed along with a proposal for their application in more appropriate regions. After successful application on islands and outermost regions, energy storage tariffs should be also applied in mainland power systems. Increased use of energy storage could optimise existing assets on the market.  相似文献

There is conflicting evidence in the literature as to whether up-regulation of urokinase plasminogen activator (u-PA) expression is related to bovine mammary epithelial cell growth. The role of u-PA receptor (u-PAR) and that of the plasminogen activator inhibitors type 1 and type 2 (PAI-1 and PAI-2) in bovine mammary epithelial cell proliferation is not known. The effect of growth factors and various hormones known to affect mammary function on expression of u-PA, u-PAR, PAI-1, PAI-2 and cell proliferation using the BME-UV1 bovine mammary epithelial cell line was examined. Cell proliferation was measured using the MTT assay and direct cell enumeration. Results showed that both IGF-1 and EGF increased cell proliferation but EGF was a more potent mitogen than IGF-1. Furthermore, IGF-1 increased by 2-fold expression of both u-PA and u-PAR while EGF increased by 3·8-fold the expression of only u-PAR. Both growth factors had no effect on expression of PAI-1 and PAI-2. In a manner consistent with changes in gene expression, EGF and to a lesser extent IGF-1 up-regulated total cell associated, membrane-bound and secreted u-PA activity. Thus, a strong correlation exists between u-PAR gene expression along with the activity of u-PA present on cell membranes and cell proliferation. Dexamethasone, prolactin and surprisingly insulin had no effect on cell proliferation. Dexamethasone alone and when combined with insulin or prolactin up-regulated gene expression of both PAI- and PAI-2 but not that of u-PA and u-PAR. Decreased total cell-associated, membrane-bound and secreted u-PA activity was detected in cells cultured in the presence of dexamethasone when combined with insulin or prolactin. However no such effect was observed in the presence of dexamethasone alone. Thus, dexamethasone acting synergistically with prolactin or insulin inhibits the activation of the plasmin-plasminogen system but this inhibition is not correlated with any changes in cell proliferation.  相似文献

The effect of active [oxygen absorber (OA) combined with an ethanol emitter (EE)] and modified atmosphere (100% Nitrogen) packaging in combination with a high barrier experimental polyethylene terephthalate‐silicon oxides//low density polyethelene film on shelf‐life extension of grated Graviera cheese stored at 4 and 12°C was investigated. Microbiological (total viable counts, Pseudomonads, lactic acid bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae and Yeasts/Moulds), physico‐chemical (pH, thiobarbituric acid and colour) and sensory (odour and taste) changes occurring in the product were monitored as a function of treatment and storage time (10 weeks). Sensory shelf‐life was approximately 1, 1.5, 4.5, 6, 9 and at least 10 weeks for control samples (12 and 4°C), for N2 packaged samples (12 and 4°C) and samples packaged with the OA + EE (12 and 4°C), respectively. At the point of sensory rejection, yeasts and moulds increased from 2.00 to 3.60 and 5.55 log CFU/g for control samples stored at 4 and 12°C, respectively. Similarly, for samples stored under nitrogen, yeasts and moulds reached 2.00 and 2.32 log CFU/g at 4 and 12°C, respectively. Yeasts and moulds in samples with the OA + EE remained below 2 log CFU/g throughout the entire storage period, irrespective of storage temperature. pH varied between 5.72 and 6.49 depending on specific treatment. Malondialdehyde absorbance ranged between 0.05 for fresh samples and 0.79 mg/kg at the time of sensory rejection of samples. Light parameters L and b decreased while parameter a increased during storage, reflecting a gradual discolouration of all samples and especially those stored at 12°C.  相似文献

Barium studies investigations (barium swallow, barium meal and barium enema) are the basic routine radiological examination, where barium sulphate suspension is introduced to enhance image contrast of gastrointestinal tracts. The aim of this study was to quantify the patients' radiation doses during barium studies and to estimate the organ equivalent dose and effective dose with those procedures. A total of 33 investigations of barium studies were measured by using thermoluminescence dosemeters. The result showed that the patient entrance surface doses were 12.6 ± 10, 44.5 ± 49 and 35.7 ± 50 mGy for barium swallow, barium meal, follow through and enema, respectively. Effective doses were 0.2, 0.35 and 1.4 mSv per procedure for barium swallow, meal and enema respectively. Radiation doses were comparable with the previous studies. A written protocol for each procedure will reduce the inter-operator variations and will help to reduce unnecessary exposure.  相似文献

Highly crystallized silicon layers were grown on metal sheets at high temperature (950 degrees C) by thermal CVD from silane. An intermediate buffer layer was mandatory to prevent interdiffusion and silicide formation but also to compensate lattice parameters and thermal expansion coefficients mismatches between metal and silicon and ideally transfer some crystalline properties (grain size, texture) from the substrate to the silicon layer. After a thermodynamic study, aluminum nitride or titanium nitride diffusion barrier layers were selected and processed by CVD. The structure and the interfaces stabilities of these silicon/nitride/metal stacks were studied by field effect gun scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. As a result, TiN deposited by CVD appears to be an efficient material as a buffer layer between steel and silicon.  相似文献
