Ozonated water has been demonstrated to induce significant results in terms of the elimination of microorganisms. The present study assessed the damage to Streptococcus mutans after exposure to ozonated water; the ozone generator was adjusted to provide an outlet concentration of 60 mg/L, the samples were submitted to different ozonation times 1, 2, 4, 6, and 10 mi. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force images were obtained to identify damage to the bacteria, followed by reactive oxygen species (ROS) evaluation and microbial viability. The results showed a significant reduction in viability and the images evidenced the generation of gaps on the microbial wall and surface layer alterations. Ozone can induce significant damage to S. mutans, thus suggesting that the use of ozonated water to prevent carious lesion formation is extremely promising. 相似文献

A new multipotential pulse technique called differential staircase voltacoulommetry (DSVC) is developed to study charge transfer processes which take place in an electroactive monolayer. We have demonstrated that the faradaic capacitances obtained from DSVC ((ΔQ/ΔE)-E curves) are identical to those obtained in cyclic voltammetry ((I/v)-E curves) when the pulse amplitude fulfils ΔE ? RT/(nF), independently of the reversibility of the electrode process.DSVC presents the advantage of allowing a simpler and more effective correction of the non-faradaic components of the response than does cyclic voltammetry (CV), even considering that the non-faradaic interfacial capacitance changes with the redox state of the adsorbed species.Moreover, DSVC leads to a peak shaped response which is easily characterisable for reversible processes whereas other multipulse techniques lead to null currents in such a way that it is necessary to use short time pulses in order to transform the response to quasi-reversible, which is much more difficult to analyse and which will present a greater distortion, due to non-faradaic effects.Methods for calculating the surface excess and the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the electroactive adsorbates are proposed, experimentally tested and compared with those of CV. 相似文献

Ozone gas diluted in water has been shown to produce significant results in terms of the elimination of microorganisms. Streptococcus mutans is the etiologic agent of dental caries. Methods using water containing ozone and an ultrasonic cleaner were employed for the disinfection of a curette. Streptococcus mutans was grown in a selective medium. The curette was submitted to disinfection by water containing ozone, by ultrasound, and then both techniques were combined. The results show that either method produced a significant microbial reduction, but the efficacy of both methods combined was greater. Giardia spp. is a flagellate protozoan that presents two evolution forms, cysts and trophozoites. Cysts are resistant to chlorine, the most employed disinfectant agent in the treatment of water. For this reason, new techniques for the disinfection of waters that contain this parasite are necessary. This work evaluated the efficiency of the disinfection by ozone and ultrasound individually and simultaneously upon wastewater. The data obtained showed that after application, ozone, ultrasound, and combined techniques induced a significant elimination of Giardia spp. cysts. This study examined the effects of O3 and hot water treatments on the epidermis of Golden papaya fruit. Heat treatments were applied in a hot water brushing (HWB) system. Papayas were brushed under a pressurized hot water rinse stage at 45, 55 and 65 °C for 60 s. In the HWB treatment, 4 ppm ozone was applied to the papayas for 1 or 2 min. The results show that ozone applications did not affect the fruit's cuticular surface, while heat treatments allowed natural fissures on the fruit epidermis to recover. Several crystalloid forms were identified on the epidermis of the papayas after the heat treatments. The predominant crystalloid forms on papayas are tubular and there is a positive response to temperature; the higher the temperature, the larger and more frequent the tubular crystalloids. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) usually have a compromised nutritional status which is an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality. To know the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) and the substrate oxidation measurement is essential to prevent these complications. This study aimed to compare the REE, respiratory quotient (RQ) and body composition between patients with and without COPD. METHODS: This case-control study assessed 20 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attending a pulmonary rehabilitation program. The group of subjects without COPD (control group) consisted of 20 elderly patients attending a university gym, patients of a private service and a public healthy care. Consumption of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) was determined by indirect calorimetry and used for calculating the resting energy expenditure and respiratory quotient. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were also measured. Percentage of body fat (%BF), lean mass (kg) and muscle mass (kg) were determined by bioimpedance. The fat free mass index (FFMI) and muscle mass index (MMI) were then calculated. Results: The COPD group had lower BMI than control (p=0.02). However, WC, % BF, FFMI and MM-I did not differ between the groups. The COPD group had greater RQ (p=0.01), REE (p=0.009) and carbohydrate oxidation (p= 0.002). Conclusions: Elderly patients with COPD had higher REE, RQ and carbohydrate oxidation than controls. 相似文献

Studies about kinetics and modeling of production parameters for biosurfactants are essential to the development of efficient processes from an economic point of view. In this sense, this work evaluated the performance of four nonstructured models to explain the experimental data for biomass growth, substrate consumption, and rhamnolipid production using glycerol as carbon source and a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain. The kinetic parameters of each model were estimated using a global search method known as genetic algorithm and numerical discretization of differential equations by the Runge–Kutta 4th order method. The main result of this study showed that the Monod model best represented the experimental data, with μmax values of 0.06 h−1, KS of 50.8 g L−1, YX/S of 0.43 g g−1, and YP/X equal to 0.017 g g−1. 相似文献

The catalytic hydrolysis of soybean oil was used as an alternative for the production of monoglycerides (MG) and diglycerides (DG). The reactions were conducted in a stainless-steel tubular reactor in the temperature range of 240–290 °C, on niobium phosphate (NBP) and niobium oxide (NBO) as catalysts. In the hydrolysis reactions at 270 °C, the maximum selectivities of the products of interest were obtained at 22 % MG and 48 % DG for the reaction with NBP, and 7 % MG and 33 % DG with NBO, for 59 % and 36 % of triglyceride conversion in 10 min, respectively. The proposed kinetic model presented a good fit of the theoretical model with the experimental data, showing that the previous hypotheses considered for the mechanism development are suitable for describing the kinetics of soybean oil hydrolysis. 相似文献

Breast (BrCa) and prostate (PCa) cancers are the most common malignancies in women and men, respectively. The available therapeutic options for these tumors are still not curative and have severe side effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more effective antineoplastic agents. Herein, BrCa, PCa, and benign cell lines were treated with two ionic liquids and two quinoxalines and functional experiments were performed—namely cell viability, apoptosis, cytotoxicity, and colony formation assays. At the molecular level, an array of gene expressions encompassing several molecular pathways were used to explore the impact of treatment on gene expression. Although both quinoxalines and the ionic liquid [C2OHMIM][Amp] did not show any effect on the BrCa and PCa cell lines, [C16Pyr][Amp] significantly decreased cell viability and colony formation ability, while it increased the apoptosis levels of all cell lines. Importantly, [C16Pyr][Amp] was found to be more selective for cancer cells and less toxic than cisplatin. At the molecular level, this ionic liquid was also associated with reduced expression levels of CPT2, LDHA, MCM2, and SKP2, in both BrCa and PCa cell lines. In this study, we investigated the potential adhesion of marine bacteria isolated from seawater in the port of Chmaâla, Morocco, to sea-immersed 304 and 316 stainless steels using thermodynamic approach and the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM). Furthermore, the physicochemical properties including hydrophobicity and electron donor / electron acceptor (Lewis acid-base) of bacterial isolates and both substrates were evaluated using the contact angle measurements. The molecular identification indicated that the isolated strains were Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus amyloliquefascience. Results also showed that both bacterial strains’s cells have a hydrophilic character with ΔGiwi values of 29.30 and 24.12 mJ m?2 respectively for Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus amyloliquefascience, and are strong electron donating (γ?) and weakly electron accepting (γ+). For substrates surfaces, we found that both sea-immersed stainless steels types were hydrophilic and present strong electron-donor character (γ? = 49 ± 0.2 mJ m?2 for 304 and γ? = 55.07 ± 0.02 mJ m?2 for 316) and weak electron-acceptor character (γ+ = 5.4 ± 0.1 mJ m?2 for 304 and γ+ = 8.3 ± 0.06 mJ m?2 for 316). The theoretical prediction showed that both tested strains, B. thuringiensis and B. amyloliquefascience, exhibited positive values of ΔGTotal vis-à-vis the two sea-immersed stainless steels types which indicates unfavorable adhesion while the ESEM electro-micrographs show that both strains were able to adhere to both strainless steels surfaces. 相似文献
