Comparative X-ray scattering,microscopical, and mechanical studies on rectangular plates injection molded from different types of isotactic polypropylene

Rectangular plates were injection molded from two grades of commercial polypropylene (PP) differing in the molar mass distribution. The mold was mechanically sealed when a desired pressure p_i,max (up to 1560 bar) was reached. Samples were taken from each plate at different distances from the gate and were investigated by applying various methods. In spatially resolved wide-angle X-ray studies, the cross section of the sample was scanned with a fine X-ray beam (collimated by a Kratky small-angle camera) and the intensity of scattering was registered by a linear detector as a function of position in the cross section. The evaluation of the scattering data delivered profiles of several parameters, describing the distribution of crystallite modification β-PP and γ-PP, the degree of orientation, the size of crystallites, and interplanar spacing, depending on the distance from surface. These results and those from measurements of birefringence and elongation at break, and from polarization microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, provided details of the layered structures in the plates, at different flow lengths, and allowed far-reaching statements about the influence of molecular properties and processing conditions on the development of texture in the plates.     

Development and characterization of inks for screen printing of glass solders for SOFCs

Glass ceramics are supposed to produce stable sealants between ceramic electrolyte and ferritic steel in planar SOFC stacks. The screen printing method is a suitable industrial process in order to produce layers with tailored height and width reproducibly. An appropriate suspension was developed for this application and improved by adjusting the additive composition. This study investigates the rheological behavior of screen printing inks and the corresponding topography of the printed layers. Rotary measurements were carried out to analyse the impact of shear rates on viscosity showing shear thinning behavior. In addition, oscillatory rheometry is performed to gain information about the viscoelastic properties of the slurries and to understand the internal structure of the developed inks. The viscoelasticity and the recovery behavior after shear loading are crucial for the topography of printed films. The principal investigations are executed on solvent-based suspensions, whereby the knowledge gained is used for a transfer to water-based systems allowing a more environmentally friendly handling.     

Die mikroskopische Untersuchung von Fleisch- und Wurstwaren

Zusammenfassung Die Ergebnisse der chemischen Untersuchung von Fleisch- und Wurstwaren sind als ausschließliche Grundlage für ihre Beurteilung durchaus ungenügend; denn wir können noch nicht annähernd sämtliche chemischen Einzelbestandteile des Fleisches und der Wurstwaren mittels der im praktischen Laboratorium anwend aren Methoden nachweisen und noch viel weniger diese Einzelbestandteile quantitativ ermitteln. Es läßt sich aber auch im allgemeinen durch die chemische Untersuchung allein nicht feststellen, ob eine unter bestimmten Namen in den Handel gebrachte Ware die in diesem Namen zum Ausdruck gebrachten Fleischbestandteile tatsächlich enthält, wie z. B., ob Leberwurst Leber enthält, ferner ob minderwertige oder verbotene Organund Gewebeteile beigemischt sind oder nicht.Daher ist die mikroskopische Untersuchung, besonders in gerichtlichen Fällen, unerläßlich.Die nur auf mikroskopischem Wege erreichbare Kenntnis der in Fleisch und Wurstwaren enthaltenen Gewebe und Organe erleichtert bezw. ermöglicht die Beurteilung von Fleisch- und Wurstwaren nicht nur in vorgenannter Richtung, sondern sie erleichtert auch sehr wesentlich die Beurteilung ihres Gesamtwertes. Dieser ist verschieden je nach dem Vorhandensein der mikroskopisch nachzuweisenden Gewebe bezw. Organe und nach deren Wassergehalt. Letzterer wiederum ist z. B. bei Muskelfleisch konstanter und liegt in engeren Grenzen als bei den drüsigen Organen; im elastischen Bindegewebe ist er bedeutend niedriger als im kollagenen Bindegewebe oder im Muskelfleisch.In der vorliegenden Arbeit ist der Versuch gemacht, die mikroskopischen Schnitte der wichtigsten in Betracht kommenden Gewebe und Organe in gekochtem Zustande so zu charakterisieren, daß sie in Gemischen einwandfrei identifiziert werden können.Die Technik der mikroskopischen Untersuchung von Fleisch- und Wurstwaren ist unter Angabe bewährter Verfahren eingehend dargestellt.     

Fluorous Iminoalditols: A New Family of Glycosidase Inhibitors and Pharmacological Chaperones

A collection of new reversible glycosidase inhibitors of the iminoalditol type featuring N‐substituents containing perfluorinated regions has been prepared for evaluation of physicochemical, biochemical and diagnostic properties. The vast variety of feasible oligofluoro moieties allows for modular approaches to customised structures according to the intended applications, which are influenced by the fluorine content as well as the distance of the fluorous moiety from the ring nitrogen. The first examples, in particular in the D ‐galacto series, exhibited excellent inhibitory activities. A preliminary screen with two human cell lines showed that, at subinhibitory concentrations, they are powerful pharmacological chaperones enhancing the activities of the catalytically handicapped lysosomal D ‐galactosidase mutants associated with GM1 gangliosidosis and Morquio B disease.     

Play therapy for children with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the leading birth defect in the United States, yet few treatment options exist for children afflicted with this disorder. Although play therapy has demonstrated its efficacy with numerous special populations, as of today, no research has been conducted on its use with FAS. This article presents an overview of current data on FAS, an argument for the use of child-centered play therapy for children diagnosed FAS, and suggests areas of research needs. Low molecular weight oligo-β-hydroxybutyric acids and 3-hydroxy-N-phenethyl-butyramide – new products from microorganisms

Summary A new group of low-molecular weight channel-forming oligo(hydroxybutyric acids) (cPHBs, 1 with n = 8–30; main component MW ≈ 1300 dalton) was isolated from microorganisms of different origin. Inclusion bodies were electron-microscopically visible in cells in the state of autolysis, not in cells in the exponential phase of growth. cPHB and high-molecular poly(l3-hydroxybutyric acid) (sPHB) is cleaved by phenylethylamine and forms the corresponding monomeric hydroxybutyramide and – under drastic conditions, the crotylamide. One of these compounds, the 3-hydroxy-N-phenethyl-butyramide (5), was isolated as a new natural product now. Synthesis and biological investigation of novel tricyclic benzodiazepinedione-based RGD analogues

Integrins, a widely expressed family of heterodimeric cell surface adhesion proteins, are expressed in a variety of cell types. They play a decisive role in cell-cell adhesion or cell to extracellular matrix adhesion events. Antagonists of alpha(v)beta(3) or alpha(IIb)beta(3) integrin may have a potential use in suppression of pathological processes. We present the synthesis of novel tricyclic benzodiazepinedione-based RGD analogues, which were subsequently tested in a solid-phase receptor assay in order to investigate their binding affinities towards alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(IIb)beta(3) integrin.     

The role of the corpus callosum in dichotic listening: A combined morphological and diffusion tensor imaging study.

The objective of the present study was to examine the role of the corpus callosum (CC) in dichotic listening. For this purpose, 40 right-handed healthy male participants were assessed with morphological and diffusion tensor imaging, which yielded macrostructural (midsagittal area) and microstructural (mean diffusion, fractional anisotropy) measures of the total CC and predefined subregions. Applying the standard consonant-vowel Bergen Dichotic Listening Test (including 3 different attentional instructions), the authors found dichotic listening performance to be substantially related to the integrity of the CC at both macro- and microstructural levels. Results indicate a dual role of the CC; it is relevant not only for the stimulus-driven (bottom-up) transfer of left-ear input to the left hemisphere but also for its attentional (top-down) modulation.
