The estimation of load interaction effects is essential for residual lifetime calculations of components with cracks. Whereas overloads are widely investigated, there is still no consensus about the effects and mechanisms of underloads. For this reason, load sequences containing underloads are experimentally examined within this paper. Because Kmax and R are not appropriate for describing the cyclic crack tip loading at tension/compression loading, the σtip concept is used to quantify the crack driving force at compressive loads. Among others, the tests also include load sequences that have not been reported in the literature yet like underloads that are applied at a certain distance after an overload. The influence of underloads on crack arrest is also investigated. The experimental tests are performed with the tool steel AISI/SAE 1045.  相似文献

The Danube east of Vienna was originally an untamed, widely branching river with an approximately stable bed elevation. Regulation in the second half of the 19th century changed its morphology fundamentally—initially through upstream regulation and the consequent bedload deposit resulting in heavy aggradation—and subsequently left the bed elevation and water level almost the same until around the 1940s. Only in the second half of the 20th century did the bed elevation and low and mean water levels decrease significantly, and this trend—amplified by the power plant extension—continues today, despite constant bedload dumps to ensure the tailwater supply for the power plant at Vienna Freudenau. Further east from the Austrian-Slovak stretch of border, congestion due to the Gab?íkovo power plant becomes apparent: most of the bedload is again deposited here. This study investigates these processes using hydrographic observations in their spatial and temporal context, and, based on actual bed elevation measurements, creates a bedload balance and compares it with the results of previous studies. Bed erosion in the Danube floodplains and the local national park has far-reaching consequences, especially through siltation and scrub encroachment in the river’s branches, which are further amplified by flat, fine sediment deposits in the foothills and the formation of embankments. In the long term, flood and other water management objectives will also be adversely affected.  相似文献

A key question in the field of ceramics and catalysis is how and to what extent residual water in the reactive environment of a metal oxide particle powder affects particle coarsening and morphology. With X‐ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), we investigated annealing‐induced morphology changes on powders of MgO nanocubes in different gaseous H2O environments. The use of such a model system for particle powders enabled us to describe how adsorbed water that originates from short exposure to air determines the evolution of MgO grain size, morphology, and microstructure. While cubic nanoparticles with a predominant abundance of (100) surface planes retain their shape after annealing to T = 1173 K under continuous pumping with a base pressure of water p(H2O) = 10?5 mbar, higher water partial pressures promote mass transport on the surfaces and across interfaces of such particle systems. This leads to substantial growth and intergrowth of particles and simultaneously favors the formation of step edges and shallow protrusions on terraces. The mass transfer is promoted by thin films of water providing a two‐dimensional solvent for Mg2+ ion hydration. In addition, we obtained direct evidence for hydroxylation‐induced stabilization of (110) faces and step edges of the grain surfaces.  相似文献

Anaerobic treatment of wastes containing methanol and higher alcohols   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Experiments have been performed to ascertain the feasibility of anaerobic digestion for the treatment of an alcoholic waste (i.e. fusel oil), consisting of approx. 50% methanol and 50% higher alcohols. Batch experiments as well as continuous experiments have been conducted. The continuous experiments have been carried out using the “Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket” (UASB-) process. As inoculum a sugar beet waste grown and highly settleable and active anaerobic sludge (SBA-sludge) has been used. The SBA-sludge was shown to be superior to digested sewage sludge as seed material for an anaerobic treatment process, because—although it in fact is adapted to the fermentation of volatile fatty acids (VFA)—it does not have any significant difficulty with respect to the methanogenesis of the alcohols present in the fusel oil waste. The breakdown of higher alcohols starts immediately and that of methanol within a few days, depending on the initial load applied. In the UASB-experiments sludge loads up to 0.6 kg COD·kg VSS−1·day−1 could already be well accommodated within 1 week, so that within this period a space load could be handled as high as 20 kg COD·m−3·day−1, simply by supplying the reactor with approx. 30 kg SBA-VSS·m−3 averaged over the total reactor volume.Contrary to recent findings of Smith & Mah (Appl. envir. Microbial. 36, 870–879, 1978), which were obtained with a pure culture of Methanosarcina barkeri, the sludge is capable of fermenting VFA and methanol rapidly and simultaneously, provided the conditions for VFA and methanol fermentation are favourable. However, as in previous experiments with aqueous solutions of methanol (Lettinga et al., Water Res. 13, 725–737, 1979), we observed that the digestion process can easily become upset, especially with respect to the degradation of VFA. Once again indications have been obtained that one or more trace elements are of eminent importance with respect to the stability of the process. At present the operation of a stable anaerobic treatment process for methanolic wastes cannot be guaranteed.  相似文献

Differential image motion monitors (DIMMs) have become the industry standard for astronomical site characterization. The calibration of DIMMs is generally considered to be routine, but we show that particular care must be paid to this issue if high-accuracy measurements are to be achieved. In a side by side comparison of several DIMMs, we demonstrate that with proper care we can achieve an agreement between the seeing measurements of two DIMMS operating under the same conditions to better than +/-0.02 arc sec.  相似文献

Ovarian cancers include several disease subtypes and patients often present with advanced metastatic disease and a poor prognosis. New biomarkers for early diagnosis and targeted therapy are, therefore, urgently required. This study uses antibodies produced locally in tumor-draining lymph nodes (ASC probes) of individual ovarian cancer patients to screen two separate protein microarray platforms and identify cognate tumor antigens. The resulting antigen profiles were unique for each individual cancer patient and were used to generate a 50-antigen custom microarray. Serum from a separate cohort of ovarian cancer patients encompassing four disease subtypes was screened on the custom array and we identified 28.8% of all ovarian cancers, with a higher sensitivity for mucinous (50.0%) and serous (40.0%) subtypes. Combining local and circulating antibodies with high-density protein microarrays can identify novel, patient-specific tumor-associated antigens that may have diagnostic, prognostic or therapeutic uses in ovarian cancer.  相似文献

In this article, data on cellulose crystallite orientation parameters measured in terms of the Hermans orientation factor, average angle of orientation (αm), and 40, 50, and 75% X‐ray angles in respect to the same 13 cotton cultivars grown at different agroclimatic locations and in different crop years in India are presented and discussed. It was observed that whereas the average values of the X‐ray orientation parameters are different for different varieties they remain practically invariant within individual varieties with change of the location of growth. The orientation parameters, therefore, appear to be genetic in origin and independent of the agroclimatic conditions of growth. It is believed that these results can be suitably exploited by cotton breeders in evolving varieties with an increased strength of fibers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
