When the phenotype of neurons in pre- and paravertebral sympathetic ganglia are compared, there are marked differences in NGF dependence, neuropeptide content, connectivity and electrophysiological properties. The trophic interactions that induce these differences are currently poorly understood. One explanation is that prevertebral neurons receive a second neurotrophic signal, other than NGF, from their target of innervation. If this is the case, neurons in the prevertebral ganglia should express another neurotrophin receptor, in addition to the NGF receptor (trkA). To test this prediction, the level of expression of three neurotrophin receptors, trkA, trkB and trkC, were examined in one paravertebral sympathetic ganglia, the SCG, and two prevertebral ganglia, the celiac and superior mesenteric ganglia. It was found that mRNA encoding the full-length form of the trkB receptor was barely expressed in the SCG. Significantly higher levels of full-length trkB mRNA expression were found in the prevertebral ganglia. Ligands of the trkB receptor may, therefore, contribute to the differentiation and/or survival of some prevertebral sympathetic neurons. 相似文献

Recently, it has been shown that EDM wires undergo thermal buckling at low axial transport speeds and a series of transport instabilities at high axial transport speeds. Hence, only intermediate speeds ensure the straight wire configuration, which is needed for high-accuracy cutting. These conclusions are based on the assumption that the convective heat transfer coefficient remains piecewise constant along the length of the wire. However, a recent study on convection from a vibrating, flexible body shows that the convection coefficient becomes modal. The present study re-examines the wire stability problem with this modal effect in mind. It is shown that at low axial transport speeds, the straight wire configuration may be stable. Its stability hinges on vibration—large amplitude motion implies increased convection and increased stability from thermal buckling. At high transport speeds, the system still undergoes the reported transport instabilities. This work shows that the well-defined intermediate speed range is not so well-defined in the presence of wire vibrations. 相似文献

Admission scores from a model comprising 3 motivation factors concerning the cessation of heroin use and a confidence scale concerning postdischarge abstinence were tested for their ability to predict postdischarge outcomes in patients beginning inpatient opiate detoxification. Statistically significant prediction of abstinence from heroin 30 days after discharge and the number of heroin-free days in the 3 months following admission was based on the confidence scale and a factor concerned with externally imposed constraints on continued heroin use. The single-scale confidence measure made the largest contribution to each prediction, indicating that such scales may be potentially useful outcome predictors for postdischarge abstinence. We report two patients where the finding of isolated fetal hydrocephalus led to the detection of severe fetal thrombocytopenia, using fetal blood sampling. Serological investigation led to the diagnosis of fetomaternal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FMAIT) due to anti-HPA-1a. Both women had had previous unsuccessful pregnancies probably due to FMAIT; one had had four miscarriages at 17-18 weeks' gestation. The other had had one previous pregnancy complicated by severe fetal anaemia, and eventually hydrocephalus developed and the fetus died without the diagnosis of FMAIT being considered. Subsequent pregnancies in the two women were also affected by FMAIT, but prenatal treatment, predominantly with serial fetal platelet transfusions, resulted in a successful outcome in both cases. These observations suggest that FMAIT should be suspected if there is isolated fetal hydrocephalus, unexplained fetal anaemia, or recurrent miscarriages. The accurate diagnosis of FMAIT is important because recent advances in prenatal management can improve the outcome of subsequently affected pregnancies. 相似文献

There has been considerable controversy in concurrency theory between the ‘interleaving’ and ‘true concurrency’ schools.
The former school advocates associating a transition system with a process which captures concurrent execution via the interleaving
of occurrences; the latter adopts more complex semantic structures to avoid reducing concurrency to interleaving.
In this paper we show that the two approaches are not irreconcilable. We define a timed process algebra where occurrences
are associated with intervals of time, and give it a transition system semantics. This semantics has many of the advantages
of the interleaving approach; the algebra admits an expansion theorem, and bisimulation semantics can be used as usual. Our
transition systems, however, incorporate timing information, and this enables us to express concurrency: merely adding timing
appropriately generalises transition systems to asynchronous transition systems, showing that time gives a link between true
concurrency and interleaving. Moreover, we can provide a complete axiomatisation of bisimulation for our algebra; a result
that is often problematic in a timed setting.
Another advantage of incorporating timing information into the calculus is that it allows a particularly simple definition
of action refinement; this we present. The paper concludes with a comparison of the equivalence we present with those in the
literature, and an example system specification in our formalism.

The effect of 2 months of treatment with the oral growth hormone (GH) secretagogue MK-677 on markers of bone metabolism was determined in healthy obese male subjects. This was a randomized, double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled study. Twenty-four healthy obese males, 19-49 years of age, with body mass index > 30 kg/m2 were treated with MK-677 (25 mg/day; n = 12) or placebo (n = 12) for 8 weeks. MK-677 increased markers of bone formation; a 23% increase in the carboxy-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen levels and a 28% increase in procollagen III peptide levels were seen with as little as 2 weeks of MK-677 treatment (p < 0.01 and p = 0.001 vs. placebo, respectively) while a 15% increase in serum levels of osteocalcin was not detected until 8 weeks of treatment (p < 0.01 vs. placebo). Markers of bone resorption were induced within 2 weeks of treatment with MK-677; serum levels of the carboxy-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen were increased 26% at 8 weeks (p = 0.001 vs. placebo), and urine hydroxyproline/creatinine and calcium/creatinine ratios at 8 weeks were increased by 23% (p < 0.05 vs. placebo) and 46% (p < 0.05 vs placebo), respectively, MK-677 increased serum insulin-like growth factor binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5) by 43-44% after 2-8 weeks of treatment (p < 0.01 vs. placebo). Serum IGFBP-4 was increased by 25% after 2 weeks of treatment (p < 0.001 vs. placebo) but no significant change from baseline was observed after 8 weeks of treatment. Plasma interleukin-6 was not significantly changed by active treatment. In conclusion, short-term treatment of healthy obese male volunteers with the GH secretagogue MK-677 increases markers of both bone resorption and formation. Large increases in serum levels of IGF-1 and IGFBP-5 and a transient increase in serum IGFBP-4 were found. Future long-term studies are needed to investigate if prolonged treatment with MK-677 increases bone mass. 相似文献

Stream habitat restoration is an important tool for fisheries management in impaired lotic systems. Although small‐scale benefits of stream habitat restoration are commonly investigated, it is difficult to demonstrate population effects. The Pahsimeroi River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha population was previously restricted to the lower portion of the river by multiple irrigation structures. To address fish passage issues, a combination of restoration projects was initiated including barrier removals, instream flow enhancements and installation of fish screens on diversions. The largest barrier was removed in 2009, more than doubling the amount of accessible linear habitat. We hypothesized restoration efforts would expand the distribution of spawning salmon in the Pahsimeroi River watershed, leading to a broader distribution of juveniles. We also hypothesized a broader juvenile distribution would have population effects by reducing the prevalence of density‐dependent growth and survival. Redds were documented in newly accessible habitat immediately following barrier removal and accounted for a median of 42% of all redds in the Pahsimeroi River watershed during 2009–2015. Snorkel surveys also documented juvenile rearing in newly accessible habitat. Juvenile productivity increased from a median of 64 smolts/female spawner for brood years 2002–2008 to 99 smolts/female spawner for brood years 2009–2014. Overall, results suggested increased habitat accessibility in the Pahsimeroi River broadened the distribution of spawning adult and rearing juvenile salmon and reduced the effects of density‐dependent survival. Large‐scale stream restoration efforts can have a population effect. Despite the large‐scale effort and response, habitat restoration alone is likely not sufficient to restore this population. 相似文献

This study focused on an examination of how type, quality and children's awareness of design features in digital math games, along with an awareness of the mathematics goals of the game, were related to learning outcomes. We conducted a parallel conversion mixed methods study with 45 students in Grades 3 and 4 (ages 9–10). Students participated in clinical interviews using three digital math games. The results suggest a moderated mediation relationship in which the quality of the design features moderated the mediating impact of children's awareness of the game's design features, specifically when the child was aware of the mathematics content learning goal (MCLG) of the game. These findings show how important it is that design features are of high quality in a digital math game, and how this is intertwined with children's awareness of the features and the MCLG. When these variables intertwined in just the right way, the interactions between the children and the digital math game afforded mathematical learning growth. 相似文献

Lactate dehydrogenases are of considerable interest as stereospecificcatalysts in the chemical preparation of enantiomerically pure-hydroxyacid synthons. For such applications in synthetic organicchemistry it would be desirable to have enzymes which tolerateelevated temperatures for prolonged reaction times, to increaseproductivity and to extend then applicability to poor substrates.Here, two examples are reported of significant thermostabilizations,induced by sitedirected mutagenesis, of an already thermostableprotein, the L-lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27
[EC]
, 35 kDa permonomer subunit) from Bacillus stearothermophilus. Thermal inactivationof this enzyme is accompanied by irreversible unfolding of thenative protein structure. The replacement of Argl71 by Tyr stabilizesthe enzyme against thermal inactivation and unfolding. Thisstabilizing effect appears to be based on improved interactionsbetween the subunits in the core of the active dimeric or tetramericforms of the enzyme. The thermal stability of L-lactate dehydrogenasevariants with an active site Arg residue, either in the 171(wild-type) or in the 102 position, is further increased bysulfate ions. The two stabilizing effects are additive, as foundfor the Argl71Tyr/ Gln1O2Arg double mutant, for which the stabilityof the protein in 100 mM sulfate solution reaches that of L-lactatedehydrogenases from extreme thermophiles.
