An Equation of State for Fluids by Applying the Tower—Well Potential Model

A simple theoretical equation of state is derived by applying the Tower-Well potential model about the molecular distribution based on the generalized van der Waals partition function. It needs only three molecular parameters which have distinct physical meanings. The resulting equation of state predicts rather well the vapor pressures, saturated liquid volumes, saturated vapor volumes and PVT thermodynamic properties of polar and structurally complex molecules over a wide temperature and pressure range.

Kinetic and FT-i.r. studies of the sodium-catalysed steam gasification of coal chars

The catalytic effects of Na₂CO₃, NaHCO₃, NaOH, NaNO₃ and NaCl on steam gasification of coal chars have been studied by gravimetric measurements at temperatures ranging from 600 to 750 °C and at atmospheric pressure. FT-i.r. studies were carried out to determine the nature of the catalyst-coal interaction. All the salts studied, except NaCl, exhibited good catalytic activity. It was found that the gasification rate increased linearly with the sodium/carbon ratio until a saturation point was reached at a value of 0.12. For the same metal/carbon ratio, the sodium salts were less active than potassium salts, however their activities were similar when compared on the basis of cation loading. FT-i.r. studies of devolatilized and partially gasified samples treated with the active salts showed absorption bands at 1675,1450 and 880 cm^?1. Based on the gravimetric and i.r. results obtained, a model for the catalyst-coal interaction is proposed.

Decomposition of 2-naphthalenesulfonate in electroplating solution by ozonation with UV radiation

This study investigates the ozonation of 2-naphthalenesulfonate (2-NS) combined with UV radiation in the electroplating solution. 2-NS is commonly used as a brightening and stabilization agent in the electroplating solution. Semibatch ozonation experiments were conducted under various reaction conditions to study the effects of ozone dosage and UV radiation on the oxidation of 2-NS. The concentrations of 2-NS were analyzed at specified time intervals to elucidate the decomposition of 2-NS. Total organic carbon (TOC) is chosen as a mineralization index of the ozonation of 2-NS. In addition, values of pH and oxidation reduction potential were continuously measured in the course of experiments. As a result, the nearly complete mineralization of 2-NS via the ozonation treatment can be achieved. The mineralization of 2-NS is found accelerated by the introduction of UV radiation and has a distinct relationship with the consumption of applied ozone. These results can provide useful information for the proper removal of 2-NS in the electroplating solution by the ozonation with UV radiation.     

Measurements of light scattering from glass substrates by total integrated scattering

A total integrated scattering (TIS) measurement was performed to investigate the surface and volume scattering of K9 glass substrates with low reflectance. Ag layers with thicknesses of 60 nm were deposited on the front and back surfaces of the K9 glass substrates by the magnetron sputtering technique. Surface scattering of the K9 glass substrate was obtained by the TIS measurement of the Ag layers on the assumption that the Ag layers and the K9 substrate had the same surface profile. Volume scattering of the substrates was deduced by subtracting the front and back surface scattering from the total scattering of the substrates.
