This paper considers a novel approach to simultaneous optimization of the adjustable parameters of all the stabilizers in multimachine power systems to obtain the best dynamic performance. It is based on frequency domain analysis using the domain-separation method, Nyquist's stability criterion, and the frequency criterion of quality. With the proposed technique, the condition for stability of the system and the range of variation of the adjustable gains can be determined. Insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) is phosphorylated on multiple tyrosine residues by ligand-activated insulin receptors. These tyrosine phosphorylation sites serve to dock several Src homology 2-containing signaling proteins. In addition, IRS-1 contains a pleckstrin homology domain and a phosphotyrosine binding domain (PTB) implicated in protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions. In a yeast two-hybrid screening using Xenopus IRS-1 (xIRS-1) pleckstrin homology-PTB domains as bait, we identified a Xenopus homolog of Rho-associated kinase alpha (xROKalpha) as a potential xIRS-1-binding protein. The original clone contained the carboxyl terminus of xROKalpha (xROK-C) including the putative Rho binding domain but lacking the amino-terminal kinase domain. Further analyses in yeast indicated that xROK-C bound to the putative PTB domain of xIRS-1. Binding of xROK-C to xIRS-1 was confirmed in Xenopus oocytes after microinjection of mRNA corresponding to xROK-C. Furthermore, microinjection of xROK-C mRNA inhibited insulin-induced mitogen-activated protein kinase activation with a concomitant inhibition of oocyte maturation. In contrast, microinjection of xROK-C mRNA did not inhibit mitogen-activated protein kinase activation or oocyte maturation induced by progesterone or by microinjection of viral Ras (v-Ras) mRNA. Covert recognition of faces in prosopagnosia, in which patients cannot overtly recognize faces but nevertheless manifest recognition when tested in certain indirect ways, has been interpreted as the functioning of an intact visual face recognition system deprived of access to other brain systems necessary for consciousness. The authors propose an alternative hypothesis: that the visual face recognition system is damaged but not obliterated in these patients and that damaged neural networks will manifest their residual knowledge in just the kinds of tasks used to measure covert recognition. To test this, a simple model of face recognition is lesioned in the parts of the model corresponding to visual processing. The model demonstrates covert recognition in 3 qualitatively different tasks. Implications for the nature of prosopagnosia, and for other types of dissociations between conscious and unconscious perception, are discussed. Coffee beverage has been associated with antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, a cariogenic bacterium. This study aimed at identifying natural compounds in coffee that contribute to such activity and investigate the influence of species, roasting and decaffeination on it. Coffee chemical compounds and aqueous extracts of green and roasted regular and decaffeinated Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora beans were tested. MIC, biofilm inhibition and biofilm reduction results were correlated with the concentration of coffee compounds in the extracts. 5-Caffeoylquinic acid, trigonelline and caffeic acid solutions showed bacteriostatic activity (MIC = 0.8 mg/mL). Lighter and regular extracts showed higher inhibitory activity than darker and decaffeinated extracts, with an inverse correlation between bacterial colony-forming units and roasting degree. Only regular C. canephora extracts showed biofilm formation inhibition. The joint effect of chlorogenic acids, trigonelline and caffeine or other compounds removed by decaffeination seems to be one of the causes for coffee antibacterial activity against S. mutans. 相似文献
