Progressive visual analytics (PVA) has emerged in recent years to manage the latency of data analysis systems. When analysis is performed progressively, rough estimates of the results are generated quickly and are then improved over time. Analysts can therefore monitor the progression of the results, steer the analysis algorithms, and make early decisions if the estimates provide a convincing picture. In this article, we describe interface design guidelines for helping users understand progressively updating results and make early decisions based on progressive estimates. To illustrate our ideas, we present a prototype PVA tool called Insights Feed for exploring Twitter data at scale. As validation, we investigate the tradeoffs of our tool when exploring a Twitter dataset in a user study. We report the usage patterns in making early decisions using the user interface, guiding computational methods, and exploring different subsets of the dataset, compared to sequential analysis without progression.  相似文献

We propose one-dimensional photonic bandgap (PB) dielectric structures to be used at grazing incidence in order to obtain an extended bandgap exhibiting considerably reduced reflection loss and dispersion compared to similar structures used at a normal incidence of light. The well-known quarter-wave condition is applied for the design in this specific case, resulting in resonance-free reflection bands without drops in reflection versus wavelength function and a monotonous variation of the group delay dispersion versus wavelength function, which are important issues in femtosecond pulse laser applications. Based on these results we extend our studies to two-dimensional PB structures and provide guidelines to the design of leaking mode-free hollow-core Bragg PB fibers providing anomalous dispersion over most of the bandgap.  相似文献

Objective: The authors investigated health-related effects of social control (influence) that spouses exert in relation to osteoarthritis patients' medical adherence after total knee replacement surgery. Patients' behavioral and emotional responses to control were examined as mediators of associations between spouses' use of two control strategies (pressure, persuasion) and patients' physical and psychological recovery. Design: The authors used a three-wave panel design with assessments at one month before surgery, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Data were collected during in-person interviews with 70 married, older adult patients. Main Outcome Measures: Recovery outcomes were assessed as improvement in knee limitations and depressive symptoms at the 3 month follow-up. Results: Spousal pressure and persuasion at one month postsurgery were indirectly associated with patients' recovery outcomes through patients' positive emotional responses to control. Conclusion: Although there are often immediate behavioral benefits in response to partners' use of both pressure and persuasion, the long-term health effects of these strategies seem to be accounted for by their opposing links to positive emotions. The market's leading Hungarian Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operator—Westel—has recently introduced a Hungarian e-mail reading system as a regular service. It was implemented on the basis of an experimental system developed at the Department of Telecommunications and Telematics of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (DTT BUTE). In this article, the considerations involved in the design and implementation decisions of both the experimental and the industrial systems will be described. Results of the first 10 weeks of regular use of the industrial system will also be given.  相似文献

One of the specific features of the scoliosis operations with a posterior approach is that both the correction of the deformity and then the maintaining of the corrected situation are carried out with the help of the implants. With the currently applied systems based on the CD principle it is still difficult to control the rotational component of the scoliotic curve. To complement the systems based on the CD principle, we have developed an implant family whose application makes the correction of the dorsal deformity generally simplier and derotation more effective. Our method is based on the application of such hooks which, linked to the longitudinal rods and hooked on both transverse processes of the instrumented vertebrae, transmit the concerted forces exerting their influence in the direction of the correction. Depending on their symmetrical relations, the hooks are capable of tilting in the frontal plane and derotating in the horizontal plane simultaneously, in the direction of our choice. The stability and applicability of the hooks were tested in implants into cadavers, and then the intimate relations of the implants were examined by means of radiological tests and dissection on instrumented specimens. On the basis of our results, the implants can already be used in clinical practice.  相似文献

Williams syndrome is a complex developmental disorder. The major cardiovascular component of Williams syndrome is supravalvular aortic stenosis, a progressive disease that may need surgical repair. Williams syndrome is associated with heterozygous microdeletion in the chromosomal region 7q11.23 encompassing the elastin gene. We have identified a new, highly informative tetranucleotide repeat polymorphism within the human elastin gene. This marker together with other, previously described elastin gene markers was used to show deletion of the elastin gene in nine sporadic Williams syndrome patients from Hungary. Application of polymorphisms within and flanking the elastin gene on chromosome 7 provides a fast, polymerase chain reaction based method for mutational analysis of Williams syndrome patients.  相似文献

Dual-label immunocytochemical procedures were employed to provide ultrastructural evidence for the presence of substance P (SP) in afferents to estrogen-receptive neurons in the medial preoptic area (MPO) of the female rat. SP-immunoreactive axon terminals were observed to innervate the periventricular (PvPO) and medial (MPN) preoptic nuclei of the MPO densely, and to form synaptic connections at these sites with neurons which contain estrogen receptors in their nucleus. These results indicate that estrogen-receptive preoptic neurons may be regulated by SP-containing neuronal pathways via synaptic mechanisms.  相似文献

Polymer blends were prepared in the whole composition range using polymers of different polarity. Mechanical properties were characterized by tensile measurements. Surface and interfacial properties were measured and calculated and parameters characterizing the miscibility were determined. A correlation was found between the yield stress and the thermodynamic quantities characterizing the degree of miscibility. Since both the degree of miscibility and morphology are influenced by the interfacial tension, it can be regarded as the best candidate to correlate polymer/polymer interaction and mechanical properties in polymer blends.  相似文献

A bipartite graph is a powerful abstraction for modeling relationships between two collections. Visualizations of bipartite graphs allow users to understand the mutual relationships between the elements in the two collections, e.g., by identifying clusters of similarly connected elements. However, commonly‐used visual representations do not scale for the analysis of large bipartite graphs containing tens of millions of vertices, often resorting to an a‐priori clustering of the sets. To address this issue, we present the Who's‐Active‐On‐What‐Visualization (WAOW‐Vis) that allows for multiscale exploration of a bipartite social‐network without imposing an a‐priori clustering. To this end, we propose to treat a bipartite graph as a high‐dimensional space and we create the WAOW‐Vis adapting the multiscale dimensionality‐reduction technique HSNE. The application of HSNE for bipartite graph requires several modifications that form the contributions of this work. Given the nature of the problem, a set‐based similarity is proposed. For efficient and scalable computations, we use compressed bitmaps to represent sets and we present a novel space partitioning tree to efficiently compute similarities; the Sets Intersection Tree. Finally, we validate WAOW‐Vis on several datasets connecting Twitter‐users and ‐streams in different domains: news, computer science and politics. We show how WAOW‐Vis is particularly effective in identifying hierarchies of communities among social‐media users.  相似文献
