The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effects of cigarette smoking and serum lipids, folate, and vitamin B12 on the development of lung cancer in the Turkish population. The study group consisted of patients with histologically proven lung cancer and the control group comprised healthy smokers being followed in our smoking cessation outpatient department. Smoking history was obtained from all subjects and serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamin B12, and folate levels were measured. Pack/years of cigarettes smoked were significantly higher in the subjects with lung cancer than in the control group (p < 0.01). Serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, serum folate, and vitamin B12 levels were within normal limits in both groups (p < 0.05), but serum vitamin B12 levels were statistically significantly higher (p < 0.01) in the cancer group than in the controls. In our study, we did not observe low levels of serum cholesterol, vitamin B12, or folate in the lung cancer patients.  相似文献

The most basic visual capabilities found in living organisms are based on motion. Machine vision, of course, does not have to copy animal vision, but the existence of reliably functioning vision modules in nature gives us some reason to believe that it is possible for an artificial system to work in the same or a similar way. In this article it is argued that many navigational capabilities can be formulated as pattern recognition problems. An appropriate retinotopic representation of the image would make it possible to extract the information necessary to solve motion-related tasks through the recognition of a set of locations on the retina. This argument is illustrated by introducing a representation of image motion by which an observer's egomotion could be derived from information globally encoded in the image-motion field. In the past, the problem of determining a system's own motion from dynamic imagery has been considered as one of the classical visual reconstruction problems, wherein local constraints have been employed to compute from exact 2-D image measurements (correspondence, optical flow) the relative 3-D motion and structure of the scene in view. The approach introduced here is based on new global constraints defined on local normal-flow measurements—the spatio-temporal derivatives of the image-intensity function. Classifications are based on orientations of normal-flow vectors, which allows selection of vectors that form global patterns in the image plane. The position of these patterns is related to the 3-D motion of the observer, and their localization provides the axis of rotation and the direction of translation. The constraints introduced are utilized in algorithmic procedures formulated as search techniques. These procedures are very stable, since they are not affected by small perturbations in the image measurements. As a matter of fact, the solution to the two directions of translation and rotation is not affected, as long as the measurement of the sign of the normal flow is correct.Part of this work was accomplished while the author was visiting the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. The stabilizing free energy of beta-trypsin was determined by hydrogen ion titration. In the pH range from 3.0 to 7.0, the change in free energy difference for the stabilization of the native protein relative to the unfolded one (delta delta G0 titration) was 9.51 +/- 0.06 kcal/mol. An isoelectric point of 10.0 was determined, allowing us to calculate the Tanford and Kirkwood electrostatic factor w. This factor presented a nonlinear behavior and indicated more than one type of titratable carboxyl groups in beta-trypsin. In fact, one class of carboxyl group with a pK = 3.91 +/- 0.01 and another one with a pK = 4.63 +/- 0.03 were also found by hydrogen ion titration of the protein in the folded state.  相似文献

The paper describes a program of experiments for speed reduction on 28 through roads in Nordrhein-Westfalen. In the process, different measures of construction, design, and traffic control were examined to determine their usefulness to reduce speed and to improve road safety. The need for systematic evaluation of a catalogue of measures partly resulted in unsatisfactory design conceptions for the through roads. The evaluation of the effects of the program has been carried out by use of before-and-after-studies of large extent. The speed measurements show that a distinct speed reduction can be obtained only from selected physical improvements. Measures based on optical effects and traffic signs were found to have very little effect on vehicle speeds. Furthermore, in light of the relatively small number of accidents that occur on the selected facilities, it was not possible to establish the beneficial impact of each specific control measure with statistical certainty. However, the results of the experiment have had an influence on the current definition of new design standards for main urban streets in Germany.  相似文献

Hyperprostaglandin E syndrome (HPS), the prenatal variant of Bartter's syndrome, is characterized by a marked and selective stimulation of prostaglandin E (PGE2) synthesis. In the study group HPS patients showed increased urinary levels of PGE2, an index of renal, and of 11 alpha-hydroxy-9,15-dioxo-2,3,4,5,20-pentanor-19-carboxyprostano ic acid (PGE-M), an index of systemic PGE2 synthesis of 470% and of 570%, respectively. In addition, plasma concentration of PGE-M was also elevated 6.3-fold when compared with a control group. The urinary levels of other prostanoids were unaltered. During indomethacin treatment in both groups prostanoid excretion rates were suppressed to similar levels. To investigate the origin of stimulated prostanoid biosynthesis in HPS patients CD14+ monocytes were isolated from plasma samples, and the prostanoid synthesis was analyzed. The pattern and amounts of metabolites synthesized from endogenous arachidonic acid pools did not vary significantly between monocytes of the HPS and the control group. Thromboxane A2 (TXA2) was formed as the major prostanoid product. Using PGH2 as an exogenous substrate, again no difference in PGE2 biosynthesis was observed, indicating no difference in PGE-synthetic activity between both groups. Additionally, mRNA expression analysis of CD14+ monocytes via RT-PCR delineated the constitutive expression of cyclooxygenase-1, cyclooxygenase-2, and thromboxane synthase mRNA in cells from HPS patients and controls without statistical differences between these two groups. In conclusion, our data show that monocytes are not the source for the increased PGE2 biosynthesis in children with HPS, and a genetic defect in PGE synthesis can be excluded as the primary event in the pathogenesis in HPS.  相似文献
