Applying combinatorial methods to materials science offers the opportunity to accelerate the discovery of more efficient dielectric ceramics. High-throughput methods have the potential to investigate the effects of a wide range of dopants on the dielectric properties, and to optimise existing systems, encouraging the short innovation cycles that the communications technology industry requires. The London University Search Instrument (LUSI) is a fully automated, high-throughput combinatorial robot that has the potential capability to produce large numbers of sintered bulk ceramic samples with varying composition in 1 day, as combinatorial libraries on alumina substrates. Ba1−xSrxTiO3 (BST) libraries were produced by LUSI as a proof-of-principle, with x = 0–1 in steps of 0.1, and fired to 1350 and 1400 °C for 1 h. Part I of this paper described the manufacture and physical characterisation of BST libraries, showing a regular change in composition with x across the libraries. In this second part, the dielectric properties of BST libraries produced by LUSI are assessed at frequencies between 100 Hz and 1 MHz, and at temperatures between 150 and 500 K. Local piezoelectric properties were also characterised by scanning probe microscope (SPM). All measurements showed evidence of a clear functional gradient varying with x across the library, with measured r corresponding to expected values for BST.  相似文献

The aim of the present research was to investigate the ultrastructural aspects and the immunoexpression of receptor activator of NFκB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) on experimental periodontal disease of alendronate (ALN)‐treated rats. Male Wistar rats received daily injections of 2.5 mg/kg body weight of ALN during 7 days previously and 7, 14, and 21 days after the insertion of a 4.0 silk suture into the gingival sulcus around the right upper second molar. Specimens were fixed in 0.1% glutaraldehyde + 4% formaldehyde under microwave irradiation, decalcified in 4.13% EDTA and paraffin embedded for TRAP histochemistry and immunohistochemistry for RANKL and OPG, or embedded in Spurr epoxy resin for TEM analysis. ALN reduced the activity of osteoclasts and significantly decreased the resorption of the alveolar crest. In the control group the alveolar crest appeared resorbed by TRAP‐positive osteoclasts, which presented ultrastructural features of activated cells. The immunoexpression of RANKL was not inhibited by the drug; however, the expression of OPG was increased in the treated animals. The alveolar crest of ALN‐treated specimens at 21 days showed signs of osteonecrosis, like empty osteocyte lacunae, the exposed bone regions and bacterial infection. The results showed that ALN treatment in individuals with periodontal disease represents a risk of osteonecrosis because of the reduced activity of osteoclasts resultant of the increased immunoexpression of OPG. The presence of saliva in the oral environment is relevant for several essential health processes. However, the noncontrolled early saliva interaction with biomaterials manufactured for oral rehabilitation may generate alterations in the superficial properties causing negative biological outcomes. Therefore, the present review aimed to provide a compilation of all possible physical–chemical–biological changes caused by the early saliva interaction in dental implants and materials for oral regeneration. Dental implants, bone substitutes and membranes in dentistry possess different properties focused on improving the healing process when in contact with oral tissues. The early saliva interaction was shown to impair some positive features present in biomaterials related to quick cellular adhesion and proliferation, such as surface hydrophilicity, cellular viability and antibacterial properties. Moreover, biomaterials that interacted with contaminated saliva containing specific bacteria demonstrated favorable conditions for increased bacterial metabolism. Additionally, the quantity of investigations associating biomaterials with early saliva interaction is still scarce in the current literature and requires clarification to prevent clinical failures. Therefore, clinically, controlling saliva exposure to sites involving the application of biomaterials must be prioritized in order to reduce impairment in important biomaterial properties developed for rapid healing.  相似文献

After the serendipitous discovery of cisplatin, a platinum-based drug with chemotherapeutic effects, an incredible amount of research in the area of coordination chemistry has been produced. Other transition metal compounds were studied, and several new relevant metallodrugs have been synthetized in the past few years. This review is focused on coordination compounds with first-row transition metals, namely, copper, cobalt, nickel or manganese, or with zinc, which have potential or effective pharmacological properties. It is known that metal complexes, once bound to organic drugs, can enhance the drugs’ biological activities, such as anticancer, antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory ones. NSAIDs are a class of compounds with anti-inflammatory properties used to treat pain or fever. NSAIDs’ properties can be strongly improved when included in complexes using their compositional N and O donor atoms, which facilitate their coordination to metal ions. This review focuses on the research on this topic and on the promising or effective results that complexes of first-row transition metals and NSAIDs can exhibit.  相似文献

In industry, due to conservative system design, safety factors associated with uncertainty in the load requirements, discrete availability of commercial rated power, and/or load power variation, most three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors are oversized. Besides the extra capital investment, the oversizing of direct-on-line fixed-speed induction motors can lead to a significant efficiency and power factor reduction. However, the part-load efficiency of oversized motors can still be higher than the full-load efficiency of well-sized smaller motors because, in general, the nominal efficiency increases with the rated power. In this paper, an analysis of potential benefits and drawbacks of motor oversizing is carried out. On the basis of the catalogue technical data provided by one of the largest motor manufacturers for IE1-, IE2-, IE3-, and IE4-class four-pole induction motors, the main results of a simulation-based study on the oversizing energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness are presented. A method to estimate the motor efficiency and power factor for any load level using commercial catalogue data is proposed and applied. Some technical issues associated with motor oversizing are also briefly addressed. It is shown that, if the additional reactive energy consumption due to poorer power factor and the slight speed increase are ignored, for IE1-, IE2- and, to a much less extent, IE3-class motors, oversizing can be cost effective for many motor rated powers, resulting in a higher average efficiency and a lower motor lifecycle cost, as well as in an extended motor lifespan. For most IE3- and IE4-class motors, the oversizing is not cost effective because of the lower nominal efficiency gain when moving to a higher oversized rated power. Additionally, the oversizing impact on the motor energy consumption strongly depends on the load profile of the application. When an old motor fails, it will probably be an IE0- or IE1-class equivalent motor, and this situation provides a golden opportunity for replacing the old motor with a properly sized IE3- or IE4-class motor, which offers significantly higher efficiency for a wide range of loads.  相似文献

This paper presents laboratory results of biological production of hydrogen by photoautrotophic cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. Additional hydrogen production from residual Cyanobacteria fermentation was achieved by Enterobacter aerogenes bacteria. The authors evaluated the yield of H2 production, the energy consumption and CO2 emissions and the technological bottlenecks and possible improvements of the whole energy and CO2 emission chain.The authors did not attempt to extrapolate the results to an industrial scale, but to highlight the processes that need further optimization.The experiments showed that the production of hydrogen from cyanobacteria Anabaena sp. is technically viable. The hydrogen yield for this case was 0.0114 kgH2/kgbiomass which had a rough energy consumption of 1538 MJ/MJH2 and produced 114640 gCO2/MJH2. The use of phototrophic residual cyanobacteria as a substrate in a dark-fermentation process increased the hydrogen yield by 8.1% but consumed 12.0% more of energy and produced 12.1% more of CO2 showing that although the process increased the overall efficiency of hydrogen production it was not a viable energy and CO2 emission solution. To make cyanobacteria-based biofuel production energy and environmentally relevant, efforts should be made to improve the hydrogen yield to values which are more competitive with glucose yields (0.1 kgH2/kgbiomass). This could be achieved through the use of electricity with at least 80% of renewables and eliminating the unessential processes (e.g. pre-concentration centrifugation).  相似文献
