An experimental binary radiotherapy proposes the concomitant use of a high-Z compound and synchrotron X rays for enhancing radiation dose selectively in tumours by a photoelectric effect. This study aimed at measuring the resulting dose enhancement in irradiated material. A doped Fricke gel dosemeter model was manufactured with 10 mg ml(-1) of iodine (Telebrix) or barium (Micropaque). Samples were irradiated with a monochromatic synchrotron beam at 33.5, 50, 65 and 80 keV. The ensuing enhancement of the sensitivity of the dosemeter was derived from the nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation rates measured at different X-ray doses. Our results demonstrate (1) the preservation of a linear relationship between relaxation rates and X-ray doses for dosemeters doped with high-Z atoms and (2) a clear energy-dependent sensitivity enhancement for barium-doped Fricke gels. This enhancement was neither reproducible with iodinated compounds nor clearly related to the expected dose enhancement factor. However 1% barium sulphate in the gel could significantly improve the gel's response when it was irradiated by low-energy X rays. 相似文献

Background: Inflammation and malnutrition are recognized as important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Owing to substantial short‐term variability of serum C‐reactive protein (CRP), more reliable markers of malnutrition–inflammation complex syndrome should be sought with stronger associations with the risk of CVD in HD patients. We therefore explored the clinical relevance of a composite inflammatory index (prognostic inflammatory and nutritional index [PINI]) and of muscle protein mass indicators, derived from creatinine kinetics. Methods: This cross‐sectional study included 177 HD patients (89 women and 88 men; median age, 67.73 years). CVD and risk factors were assessed using medical charts, clinical examination, and biochemical measurements performed at inclusion. Lean body mass (LBM) was derived from creatinine kinetic modeling, whereas PINI was calculated as the ratio (CRP ×α1‐acid‐glycoprotein)/(albumin × transthyretin). Patients were divided according to the presence or absence of established CVD. Results: The traditional risk factors diabetes (odds ratio [OR], 5.83; p = 0.0045) and smoking (OR, 3.50; p < 0.02) were associated with an increase in prevalent CVD. Low transthyretin (OR, 3.79; p < 0.02) and high levels of CRP (OR, 2.70; p < 0.05), PINI (OR, 3.44; p < 0.02), observed LBM (OR, 3.01; p < 0.05), and the ratio of observed/expected LBM (OR, 4.24; p < 0.01) were associated with CVD after adjustment for age, sex, dialysis center, and dialysis vintage. After additional adjustment for diabetes and smoking, only PINI (OR, 2.85; p = 0.0446) and observed/expected LBM (OR, 2.96; p = 0.0361) were still significant. Conclusion: PINI and LBM are associated with increased relative risk for having CVD and could be used routinely to examine the degree of severity of malnutrition inflammation complex syndrome. 相似文献

We have developed a simple and robust method to fabricate nanoarrays of metals and metal oxides over macroscopic substrates using the crystalline surface layer (S-layer) protein of Deinococcus radiodurans as an electrodeposition mask. Substrates are coated by adsorption of the S-layer from a detergent-stabilized aqueous protein extract, producing insulating masks with 2-3 nm diameter solvent-accessible openings to the deposition substrate. The coating process can be controlled to achieve complete or fractional surface coverage. We demonstrate the general applicability of the technique by forming arrays of cuprous oxide (Cu(2)O), Ni, Pt, Pd, and Co exhibiting long-range order with the 18 nm hexagonal periodicity of the protein openings. This protein-based approach to electrochemical nanofabrication should permit the creation of a wide variety of two-dimensional inorganic structures. 相似文献

Ba(Zn1/3X2/3)O3 materials where X = Ta or Nb (respectively named BZT and BZN) exhibit attractive properties suitable for applications in type I Multi Layer Ceramics Capacitors (MLCC). Nevertheless, to produce such components using Base Metal Electrodes such as copper, a significant reduction of their sintering temperature is required. The aim of this work is first to study the effects of glass phases additions and secondly the stoichiometry influence on the sintering temperature of BZT and BZN. It is shown for example, that our materials can be sintered in air at a temperature lowered by 450C when sintering agents (B2O3 with LiF) are combined with a slight non-stoichiometry. The sintered samples are characterised in terms of final density, microstructure and phase content and it was underlined that such modifications (additions and stoichiometry) does not affect the dielectric properties. 相似文献

Ellipsometric measurements are carried out on different commercial ultra low-K mesoporous thin films under several solvent vapor pressures. In a first step, both open porosity and skeleton refractive indices are estimated using linear and Lorentz-lorenz laws. In a second step, adsorption-desorption isotherms of selected solvents, giving refractive index as a function of the relative pressure, are acquired. Pore size distributions (PSD) are calculated. Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) cause botulism, which is characterized by a flaccid paralysis, through inhibition of acetylcholine release by peripheral cholinergic nerve terminals. This is due to the zinc metallopeptidase activity of the neurotoxin, cleaving one component (synaptobrevin for BoNT/B) of the exocytosis machinery. Yet, there are no specific agents able to control the peptidase-related effects of BoNT/B. We recently developed the first compounds to inhibit this enzymatic activity in the nanomolar range. Here we report that two of our best inhibitors prevent the BoNT/B-induced cleavage of native synaptobrevin on synaptic vesicles, and partially inhibit the suppression of [3H]noradrenaline release from synaptosomes that is caused by BoNT/B. These results were obtained at micromolar concentrations, consistent with the measured inhibitory potency of these inhibitors on the native toxin. These compounds provide a new way to possibly prevent and/or to control the neurotoxin effects of botulinum. 相似文献

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of gamma radiation alone or in combination with oregano essential oil on the murein composition of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and on the intracellular and extracellular concentrations of ATP. The bacterial strain was treated with three radiation doses: 0.4 kGy to induce cell damage, 1.1 kGy to obtain a viable but non-culturable state, and 1.3 kGy to cause cell death. Oregano essential oil was used at 0.006 and 0.025% (wt/vol), which is the MIC. All treatments had a significant effect (P < or = 0.05) on the murein composition, although some muropeptides did not seem to be affected by the treatment. Each treatment had a different effect on the relative percentage and number of muropeptides. There was a significant correlation (P < or = 0.05) between the decrease in intracellular ATP and the increase in extracellular ATP following treatment of the cells with oregano oil. The reduction of intracellular ATP was even more important when oregano oil was combined with irradiation, but irradiation alone at a high dose (< or = 1.1 kGy) significantly decreased (P < or = 0.05) the internal ATP without affecting the external ATP. Recent results are presented on the passive detection, identification, and quantification of a vapor cloud of SF6 measured at a horizontal standoff distance of 5.7 km using a dual-beam interferometer optimized for background signal suppression. The measurements were performed at Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC)-Valcartier during a number of recent open-air experiments. The measurement approach is based on the differential passive standoff detection method that has been developed by DRDC Valcartier during the past few years. This work represents the first such measurement reported in the open literature for a standoff distance as large as 5.7 km. These results clearly demonstrate the capability of the differential radiometry approach to the detection, identification, and quantification of chemical vapor clouds located at long distances from the sensor. 相似文献

In this study, the measurement of the true vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectrum is considered from an experimental and theoretical approach for any general anisotropic thin solid sample exhibiting linear as well as circular birefringence (LB, CB) and dichroism (LD, CD) properties. For this purpose, we have made use of a simple model alpha-helix polypeptide, namely, the poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) or PBLG, reference sample possessing a well-known VCD spectrum and giving rise to slightly oriented films by deposition onto a solid substrate. Also, we have used a different Fourier transform infrared modulation of polarization (PM-FTIR) optical setup with two-channel electronic processing in order to record the PM-VLD and PM-VCD spectra for various sample orientations in its film plane. All the corresponding general relations of the expected intensities in these experiments and the related properly designed calibration measurements were established using the Stokes-Mueller formalism; in addition, the residual birefringence of the optical setup and the transmittance anisotropy of the detector were estimated. From a comparative study of the results obtained in solution and in the solid state, we then propose a simple new experimental procedure to extract the true VCD spectrum of an oriented PBLG thin film: its consists of calculating the half-sum of two spectra recorded at theta and at theta +/- 90 degrees sample orientations. Moreover, the complete linear and circular birefringence and dichroism properties of the ordered PBLG thin film are estimated in the amide I and amide II vibrational regions. This allows us to establish for any sample orientation various theoretical simulations of the VCD spectra that agree nicely with the observed experimental results; this confirms that the measurement of LD and LB is in this case a prerequisite in simulating the true VCD spectrum of a partly oriented anisotropic sample. This validates our combined experimental and theoretical approach and opens the route to promising future vibrational CD studies on other macroscopic anisotropic thin film samples. 相似文献
