Three groups of 15 female pigs were fed diets containing 0.8%, 1.1%, or 1.8% linoleic acid from 20 to 35 kg followed by 1.0%, 1.2% or 1.4% linoleic acid respectively from 35 kg to slaughter at 85 kg live-weight. Pigs grew at similar rates on all three diets and had similar proportions of carcass fat. The mean proportions of linoleic acid in the backfat lipids were 8.6%, 11.0%, and 13.9% respectively as the amount of the diet increased. There was a significant correlation between the concentration of linoleic acid in the inner backfat lipid and P2 backfat thickness for those animals on the high and medium linoleic acid diets but not for those on the low diet. Backfat from pigs fed the high linoleic acid diet was softer than that from the other two groups of pigs which could not be distinguished using the subjective finger probe method. Using a mechanical probe backfat consistency was distinguished between all three groups and was inversely correlated (r=?0.775, P<0.001) with the concentration of linoleic acid in the lipid. However, none of the pigs had fat which was too soft for bacon production based on either consistency data or linoleic acid content. If 15% linoleic acid is taken to be the maximum acceptable in bacon, then extrapolation of the regression of linoleic acid concentration on backfat thickness suggested that only the 1.4% linoleic acid diet is likely to result in unacceptably soft fat as pigs become leaner. However, this high concentration, although frequently present in current feeds, is not necessary since it is twice that recommended for normal growth and development of pigs. 相似文献

Improving protein stability in unnatural and suboptimal environmentsis a promising application of protein engineering technology.Carefully designed amino acid alterations may lead to dramaticpositive effects on the stability of proteins under highly perturbingconditions, such as in non-aqueous solvents. Applications ofbiocatalysts and proteins with specific binding capabilitiesin the chemical industry have been severely limited by constraintsplaced on the solvent environment. With the advent of convenientmethods for altering the amino acid composition and even synthesizingentirely new protein molecules, it is worthwhile to considerengineering proteins for stability in non-aqueous solvents.In order to identify the features that a protein would needfor stability in organic media, we have been studying the structureand properties of the hydrophobic protein crambin. Crambin isunique in that it is soluble and stable in very high concentrationsof polar organic solvents. Crambin and its water-soluble homologsoffer a powerful demonstration of protein engineering for non-aqueoussolvents. This paper describes the structural features thatcontribute to crambin's special properties. Based on these observationsand consideration of how non-aqueous solvents affect the interactionsimportant in protein folding, a set of rules for designing non-aqueoussolvent-stable proteins is proposed. 相似文献

This paper describes how data from a variety of sources are merged to present new countrywide maps of the solar energy distribution over Ethiopia. The spatial coverage of stations with radiation data was found to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of a countrywide solar energy assessment exercise. Therefore, radiation had to be predicted from sunshine hours by employing empirical models. Using data from seven stations in Ethiopia, linear and quadratic correlation relationships between monthly mean daily solar radiation and sunshine hours per day have been developed. These regional models show a distinct improvement over previously employed countrywide models. To produce a national solar-energy distribution profile, a spatial extension of the radiation/sunshine relationships had to be carried out. To do this, the intercepts (a) and slopes (b) of each of the seven linear regression equations and another six from previous studies, completed in neighbouring Sudan, Kenya and Yemen, were used to interpolate the corresponding values to areas between them. Subsequent to these procedures, 142 stations providing only sunshine data were assigned their “appropriate” a and b values to estimate the amount of solar radiation received, which was then used to produce annual and monthly solar radiation distribution maps for Ethiopia. Doubts have been raised on whether the car industry will manage to reach the goal set by the Voluntary Agreement with the
European Commission, unless tougher measures are taken to reduce CO2 emissions. Taking a stance from the concept of downsizing, we study the historical development of two strategies: first,
shifting the market toward smaller cars, market downsizing; second, a technical downsizing, i.e., technical improvements that
have enabled a reduction of engine size. We focus on the Swedish new car market from 1975 to 2002. Analysis is done by combining
sales statistics with databases over car model parameters. The development of the top and bottom 10% and 20% of the car market
of various parameters points to an increased differentiation of the market; still, the market share of small models remains
low. We identify the potential for downsizing created by increase of maximum specific torque and power and conclude that these
have enabled the cylinder volume to stabilize around 2 l. Increase in engine size has also partly been dampened by the utilization
of supercharging. The potential savings of fuel use presented by the introduction of a sixth gear in manual gearboxes have
not materialized since gearshifts have not systematically been used to lower engine speed. We conclude that there are few
signs of a downsizing in the Swedish new car fleet. From a market perspective, larger cars are still dominant and the technical
potentials to reduce engine size have not been harnessed.

The decomposition of FeS2, both as a single phase and as it exists in coal, has been studied between 250 and 350 °C, in hydrogen and nitrogen atmospheres, and in the presence of a coal-derived solvent. The first-order rate constant for decomposition of FeS2 at 350 °C with H2 alone is 6.7 × 10?1min?1; with H2 and coal-derived solvent, it is 5.5 × 10?2min?1; for FeS2 contained within coal, solvent and H2, it is 8.6 × 10?3min?1. Although the rate constant for decomposition is dependent upon temperature and the system, the activation energy in each case has been calculated to be 88 kJ mol?1. A mechanism consistent with these data is the thermal decomposition of FeS2 to produce Fe1?xS and S, followed by reaction of the sulphur with available hydrogen (from H2, solvent or coal) to form H2S. 相似文献

PMR polyimide resin was prepared from 4,4′-methylenedianiline (MDA), the dimethyl ester of 3,3′,4,4′- benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid (BTDE) and the monomethyl ester of 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (NE). The NE group serves as a chain terminator and crosslinking site. PMR/Celion 6000 composites were fabricated from resins having varying NE concentrations using two molding processes, and the laminates characterized in forced torsion. Glass transition temperatures (Tg) of 360–390°C were observed in the crosslinked resins, as compared with the literature value of 284°C reported for the uncrosslinked systemTg did not decrease with decreasing NE concentrations over the range from 2.0 to 1.25 moles. Stoichiometry, within the range studied, showed little influence on shear properties; however, a 25% variation in matrix shear modulus with processing was observed. The G12 values determined in forced torsion were in excellent agreement with those reported from tensile tests of ±45° laminates. A branching and possible secondary crosslink mechanism is proposed based on dynamic mechanical behavior and infrared spectra of the composites. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to examine how the options for producing electricity, fuels, and heat in a carbon-constrained world affect the cost-effectiveness of a range of fuels and propulsion technologies in the transportation sector. GET 7.0, a global energy system model with five end-use sectors, is used for the analysis. We find that an energy system dominated either by solar or by nuclear tends to make biofuels in plug-in hybrids cost-effective. If coal with carbon capture and storage (CCS) dominates the energy system, hydrogen cars, rather than plug-in hybrids tend to become cost-effective. Performing a Monte Carlo simulation, we then show that the general features of our results hold for a wide range of assumptions for the costs of vehicle propulsion technologies (e.g., batteries and fuel cells). However, sufficiently large changes in say the battery costs may overturn the impact of changes in the energy supply system, so that plug-in hybrid vehicles become cost-effective even if coal with CCS dominate the energy supply. We conclude that analyses of future energy carriers and propulsion technologies need to consider developments in the energy supply system. 相似文献

An analysis technique to assess the viability of digital image correlation (DIC) in tracking the full‐field strains across the surface of hanging historic tapestries is presented. Measurement uncertainty related to the use of the inherent tapestry image in tracking displacements is investigated through use of “synthetic” deformation fields. The latter are generated by mapping the details of a given tapestry image into finite element analyses. The combination of self‐weight loading, material non‐linearity, and image specific heterogeneity (related to slit stitching, damage, and patch‐restorations) serve to generate a bespoke deformation field complex enough to assess the reliability of DIC measurements. Accuracy is evaluated by comparing measured results with the original known deformations. The technique demonstrates that the optimum imaging settings and the choice of subset size for DIC analysis are strongly influenced by the tapestry image and the goal of the measurement, they are found using a compromise between conflicting objectives: minimising measurement error while maximising resolution. 相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Although it is important that children at risk of developing elevated blood lead receive regular screening, attendance at screening programs is variable. A literature review was undertaken to better understand the factors that affect carers' decisions about whether or not to take their children for blood lead screening. METHOD: Electronic databases (Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Psychinfo) were searched to identify relevant publications, supported by reviewing reference lists of identified articles and searching with internet-based search engines. RESULTS: Thirty-four published studies dealing with blood lead screening rates were identified, of which only seven papers focused specifically on parent's attitudes to blood lead screening. The barriers to and enablers of screening for elevated blood lead levels appear to be similar to those identified for other screening programs. DISCUSSION: It is recommended that attendance at screening be routinely monitored, and that where participation is suboptimal further research be undertaken, in close co-operation with affected communities or sub-groups, to determine how best to encourage screening and to protect children from lead. It is important to minimize stigma and to ensure, as far as possible, that practical barriers such as lack of transport do not restrict access to screening programs. 相似文献
