The mechanism of self-organization resulting in coordinated collective motion has received wide attention from a range of scientists interested in both its technical and biological relevance. Models have been highly influential in highlighting how collective motion can be produced from purely local interactions between individuals. Typical models in this field are termed ‘metric’ because each individual only reacts to conspecifics within a fixed distance. A recent large-scale study has, however, provided evidence that interactions ruling collective behaviour occur between a fixed number of nearest neighbours (‘topological’ framework). Despite their importance in clarifying the nature of the mechanism underlying animal interactions, these findings have yet to be produced by either metric or topological models. Here, we present an original individual-based model of collective animal motion that reproduces the previous findings. Our approach bridges the current gap between previous model analysis and recent evidence, and presents a framework for further study.  相似文献

The use of exogenous proteases to improve meat tenderness has attracted much interest recently, with a view to consistent production of tender meat and added value to lower grade meat cuts. This review discusses the sources, characteristics, and use of exogenous proteases in meat tenderization to highlight the specificity of the proteases toward meat proteins and their impact on meat quality. Plant enzymes (such as papain, bromelain, and ficin) have been extensively investigated as meat tenderizers. New plant proteases (actinidin and zingibain) and microbial enzyme preparations have been of recent interest due to controlled meat tenderization and other advantages. Successful use of these enzymes in fresh meat requires their enzymatic kinetics and characteristics to be determined, together with an understanding of the impact of the surrounding environmental conditions of the meat (pH, temperature) on enzyme function. This enables the optimal conditions for tenderizing fresh meat to be established, and the elimination or reduction of any negative impacts on other quality attributes.

The rheological behavior of a low-toxicity, aqueous, Al2O3–chitosan–2,5-dimethoxy-2,5-dihydrofuran (DHF) system was examined over a temperature range of 20°–98°C. At room temperature, a high-volume-fraction solids, shear-thinning suspension was produced. The suspension remained in a liquidlike state for ∼24 h. By contrast, at elevated temperatures, DHF became active as a cross-linking agent for chitosan, and a rapid transition from liquidlike to solidlike suspension behavior was apparent. The rate of gelation and the gel strength increased with increased temperature and increased DHF concentration. Gelation occurred at pH 1.4–4.5, which is a complex function of pH. At pH above ∼4, rapid gelation was not possible because of the low-pH solution conditions required for the cross-linking reaction. An examination of the strength and shape-forming properties of several Al2O3–chitosan–DHF systems showed them to be suitable for production of strong, reliable, complex-shaped ceramic components. In particular, small, dense Al2O3 pseudorotors were formed and found to be of sufficient strength for mold removal and subsequent handling. In all formulations examined, chitosan concentrations of <0.5 wt% (by weight of ceramic) were required; therefore, the need for a discrete binder burnout process was eliminated.  相似文献

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is closely associated with high miscarriage rates and, following in-vitro fertilization (IVF), with decreased fertilization rates, suggesting that oocytes and embryos are of poor quality. In this prospective study, we examined the development, metabolic activity and blastocyst cell number of embryos following IVF from 51 patients with either anovulatory PCOS, ovulatory PCOS or tubal disease. The number of oocytes retrieved and the fertilization rates were similar for patients with PCOS and tubal disease. Following embryo transfer, 46% of the patients with PCOS and 36% of patients with tubal disease became pregnant. A similar proportion of surplus embryos from patients with PCOS and tubal disease developed to the blastocyst stage (38% and 43% respectively). Patients with anovulatory PCOS had embryos with less fragmentation which cleaved faster, cavitated earlier and had more cells at the blastocyst stage than embryos from patients with tubal disease. While the profile of glucose uptake and lactate production was similar for all groups throughout preimplantation development, patients with tubal disease who underwent ovulation induction using the 'titrated' regimen optimized for PCOS patients resulted in embryos with reduced pyruvate uptake, in addition to low blastocyst cell numbers. This study demonstrates that with an optimized ovulation induction regimen, embryos from PCOS patients are of good quality and developmental potential.  相似文献

The authors examined married partners' similarity in reported exercise behavior as a moderator of the association between social support for exercise provided and received by extending an actor-partner dyadic effects model. Participants were married cardiac rehabilitation patients and their spouses (N=99 couples). For couples similar in their reported exercise behavior, a significant association was found between both partners' independent reports of providing exercise support to and receiving exercise support from one another (n=49 couples). However, for couples differing in their reported exercise behavior (n=50 couples), no association was found between either partner's provision and receipt of support for exercise. Findings have the potential to inform practitioners of patients who may not be receiving adequate social support for their recommended exercise. In addition to the gas and liquid phases, water can exist in many different solid states. Some of these are the well-studied crystalline ice polymorphs and the clathrate hydrates, but at least two distinguishable amorphous solid forms have also been shown to exist. This diversity of possible condensed states implies a multiplicity of transitions, each of them presumably associated with a nucleation step. Disagreement still exists as to whether the amorphous states can be regarded as metastable phases, and whether the phenomenon of polyamorphism can be treated in terms of phase transitions. In the Earth's hydrosphere, several of the crystalline and amorphous water phases can be formed from vapour, under given conditions of temperature, pressure and supersaturation, and classical nucleation theory is believed to account reasonably well for the observed growth of condensed forms of water in the upper atmosphere. Many terrestrial organisms are able to activate mechanisms to control the nucleation and growth of ice when exposed to sub-zero temperatures, thus enabling them to minimize the lethal effects of extreme freeze desiccation. The substances involved in these mechanisms include carbohydrates, amino acids and so-called cold-shock proteins, but the actual mechanisms of interfering with ice nucleation, although quite well documented, are as yet imperfectly understood. This is particularly true for the genetic control associated with biochemical processes that produce freeze resistance and freeze tolerance. The molecular biology of cold stress is currently a subject of intensive study.  相似文献

The extracellular matrix (ECM) has pleiotropic effects, ranging from cell adhesion to cell survival. In tissue engineering, the use of ECM and ECM-like scaffolds has separated the field into two distinct areas—scaffold-based and scaffold-free. Scaffold-free techniques are used in creating reproducible cell aggregates which have massive potential for high-throughput, reproducible drug screening and disease modeling. Though, the lack of ECM prevents certain cells from surviving and proliferating. Thus, tissue engineers use scaffolds to mimic the native ECM and produce organotypic models which show more reliability in disease modeling. However, scaffold-based techniques come at a trade-off of reproducibility and throughput. To bridge the tissue engineering dichotomy, we posit that finding novel ways to incorporate the ECM in scaffold-free cultures can synergize these two disparate techniques.  相似文献
