The paper presents a summary of six case histories, describing the key features of the hippo and how it formed. The paper also describes the management measures introduced to address the hippo feature.

Check Your Biosignals Here: A new dataset for off-the-person ECG biometrics

The Check Your Biosignals Here initiative (CYBHi) was developed as a way of creating a dataset and consistently repeatable acquisition framework, to further extend research in electrocardiographic (ECG) biometrics. In particular, our work targets the novel trend towards off-the-person data acquisition, which opens a broad new set of challenges and opportunities both for research and industry. While datasets with ECG signals collected using medical grade equipment at the chest can be easily found, for off-the-person ECG data the solution is generally for each team to collect their own corpus at considerable expense of resources. In this paper we describe the context, experimental considerations, methods, and preliminary findings of two public datasets created by our team, one for short-term and another for long-term assessment, with ECG data collected at the hand palms and fingers.

Validation of a Method for Quantitation of Soybean Lectin in Commercial Varieties

Soybean agglutinin (SBA) protein, also known as soybean lectin, is regarded as an anti‐nutrient due to its negative effect on the ability of monogastric animals to gain weight following consumption of raw soybean seed. Historically, SBA has been measured using a time‐consuming and cumbersome hemagglutination procedure. The objective of our research was to obtain a validated methodology that is precise and accurate in the measurement of SBA while allowing minimally equipped laboratories to effectively conduct the analysis, thus our focus was on evaluating an existing commercially available ELISA, an enzyme‐linked‐lectin‐assay (ELLA), and a hybrid ELISA/ELLA. A new ELLA technique that can detect and quantify lectins was chosen and modified specifically for the quantitation of SBA in soybean seed. The proposed ELLA methodology is similar to a standard sandwich ELISA, and uses polyacrylamide‐linked N‐acetylgalactosamine (Gal–NAc–PAA) for a capture phase and the biotinylated version (Gal–NAc–PAA–Biotin) for detection. Based upon the validation data, the ELLA method can precisely and accurately determine soybean lectin levels in soybean seed. The validated ELLA method was used to quantify SBA in nine commercial soybean varieties introduced between 1972 and 2008 and demonstrated that the natural variability of SBA is subject to the effects of genotype and environment.     

Solvent Influence on the Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol over Pt/SiO2 and Pt/H‐MFI 90 Catalysts

Second generation biofuels are produced in the bioliq® process at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology via gasification of pyrolysis oil and synthesis of gasoline from the emerging synthesis gas. An alternative strategy is the direct upgrading of the pyrolysis oil by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). The present study reports on the HDO of guaiacol as one of the phenolic compounds strongly abundant in such mixtures. Special focus was laid on the solvent influence using Pt‐based catalysts. Higher HDO ability was seen using nonpolar solvents and acidic supports. Characterization of the catalysts before and after the test showed that the solvent did not only influence the reactivity, but also the catalyst stability.     

Wild Ways and Paths of Pleasure: Access to British waterfalls, 1500–2000

In Britain the rise of tourism, largely associated with the Romantic taste for landscape, encouraged travel to relatively inaccessible areas. Among travellers in search of the picturesque and the sublime, waterfalls were particularly popular, but these were commonly difficult and dangerous places to visit. The impact of tourism on the evolution of the landscape at waterfall sites over a period during which people travelled to tourist centres on horseback, by coach, by rail and by motor vehicle is examined. Drawing on topographical, travel and tourist literature from the sixteenth century to 2000, together with extensive field observation, the evolution from the 'natural' to the designed landscape, created to meet the needs of, and to attract, visitors, is considered. It is demonstrated how, while facilitating visits to natural attractions such as waterfalls, improved access and the provision of amenities have changed valued landscapes and, hence, the visitor's experience of them.     

Temperature Dependence of Efficiency in GaInN/GaN Light‐Emitting Diodes with a GaInN Underlayer

The temperature dependence of the efficiency (i.e., temperature‐mediated efficiency droop) in blue light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) is investigated. A GaInN/GaN LED with a GaInN underlayer having an indium mole fraction of 8% shows less temperature dependence of efficiency, compared to the LED without an underlayer. Better carrier confinement in the active region of the LED with a GaInN underlayer is proposed to reduce carrier leakage from the active region at high temperature. The results indicate that the insertion of an underlayer leads to an improvement of the LED's radiative efficiency and its high‐temperature‐tolerant performance.
