Slenderness limits normal to the plane of bending for beam-columns in plastic design

This paper describes a theoretical approach for identifying the spacing of lateral restraints to the compression flange for beams, and beam-columns with limited axial force, in regions of moment gradient, in order to achieve an identified rotation capacity of the plastic hinge within this length. The predictions obtained from this approach are compared with the results of tests conducted by Smith and Adams. It is acknowledged that the analytical technique which is used is rather simplistic and could be expanded into a more sophisticated model, although the non-linear nature of the solution may make this cumbersome. Nevertheless a favourable comparison is obtained and it is possible to recommend appropriate formulae for design purposes.     

Regional implications of information technology

Information technology (IT) is already having an impact on economic development in the developed world, both directly and indirectly, and this will undoubtedly grow and intensify. It affects both the nature of the production process and the kinds of goods and services produced, but it also has a particularly significant influence on the location of economic activities. This article focuses upon the spatial impacts of IT in Europe and considers some of the policies which could be pursued by individual cities or regions. Particular attention is paid to the problems of ‘peripheral’ regions of the European Economic Community.     

RACIAL DIFFERENTIALS IN REAL ESTATE ADVERTISING PRACTICES: An Exploratory Case Study

ABSTRACT: This article reports on the print media advertising practices of a major real estate company operating in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during 1981–1984. Statistical findings suggest that, compared to home sellers in a white neighborhood listing with this company, those in an integrated or black neighborhood could expect significantly: (1) lower frequencies of advertisements and open houses noted in the Sunday metropolitan newspaper; (2) higher probabilities of no properties in their area being advertised or advertised only with “one-line” ads; and (3) lower probability of their area being described favorably in the ad Potential nonracial explanations of these findings appear invalid. The potential motivations for these practices and their segregative consequences are analyzed

Effect of Interparticle Potentials and Sedimentation on Particle Packing Density of Bimodal Particle Distributions During Pressure Filtration

Effect of interparticle forces, bimodal particle size distribution, and slurry viscosity on particle packing in alumina bodies consolidated by pressure filtration is presented. The requirements for packing colloidal particles to their highest density are strong repulsive interparticle forces and optimum particle size distribution. Even though these conditions are met, the high packing density in consolidated bodies may be adversely affected by particle segregation resulting from sedimentation. Therefore, the slurry during consolidation must have a sufficiently high viscosity to prevent sedimentation.
