The thermal spectral emission from ferromagnetic iron observed at normal incidence and with the magnetization parallel to its surface is partially linearly polarized. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy commonly apply a spin-echo or stimulated echo preparation including sensitizing field gradients. The article reports on a systematic numerical approach to an optimum diffusion preparation considering undesired signal losses caused by relaxation. A large range of possible applications on whole-body units and animal scanners is covered. Instructions for an optimized type and timing of the diffusion preparation are provided for the readership, based on the desired diffusion weighting (b-value), the available maximum field gradient amplitudes, the RF pulse durations and gradient ramp times, and the relaxation characteristics of the specimen (or tissue) of interest. In addition, a new type of diffusion preparation named SEASON (simultaneous Spin-Echo And Stimulated echO preparatioN) is introduced and compared with spin-echo and stimulated echo diffusion preparation. It is demonstrated that spin-echo preparation is superior to stimulated echo preparation in all cases with T2 ≈ T1 and in all cases with relatively low diffusion weighting resulting in short duration of diffusion sensitizing gradients δ « T2. For tissues with T2 « T1 (as musculature or red bone marrow) stimulated echo preparation becomes superior to spin-echo preparation for high ratios b/A2 (b-value indicates diffusion weighting,A is the maximum gradient amplitude). The new SEASON technique allows a higher yield in signal intensity compared to spin-echo or stimulated echo preparations in clinically relevant cases. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Use of the acousto-optic switch as a wavelength-routing element in WDM networks is described. The need for deep isolation between wavelength channels has resulted in the search for efficient sidelobe suppression techniques such as tapering of the acousto-optic profile by imbedding an optical waveguide in one arm of an acoustic directional coupler. The theory of sidelobe-suppression in the optical transmission function of a SAW-coupler apodized acousto-optic filter is presented. A low-sidelobe SAW-coupler-apodized AO switch was fabricated and used in a 1.5 micron multi-wavelength WDM switching demonstration employing four 4 nm-spaced optical channels. Crosstalk was below -19 dB for single wavelength selection and below -15 dB for arbitrary routing patterns, a dramatic improvement over unapodized AO switches  相似文献

Currently Pt-based metals are the best catalytic electrodes for fuel cells at operating temperatures below 500 °C. Pure platinum electrodes suffer degradation of microstructure over time at elevated temperatures due to Ostwald ripening. In this paper, better thermal stability of Pt–Ni nanoporous thin films relative to pure Pt is reported. Based on ab initio calculations, it was found that both the surface energy of a Pt0.7Ni0.3 cluster and the energy change of the Pt–Ni alloy cluster upon ripening on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) solid electrolyte were lower than pure Pt. This suggested a better thermal stability of Pt0.7Ni0.3 than Pt. In addition, annealing impacts on microstructures and properties of nanoporous Pt and Pt–Ni alloy thin films were examined experimentally. SEM images show dramatic porosity reduction for pure Pt after annealing at temperatures of 400–600 °C but insignificant microstructure change for Pt–Ni nanoporous thin films. As a result, in solid oxide fuel cells using nanoporous Pt–Ni cathodic catalysts instead of pure Pt, better stability, lower electrode impedances, and higher power densities were achieved at elevated operating temperatures (350–500 °C).  相似文献

The role of grain boundaries on oxygen surface exchange in an oxide ion conductor is reported. Atomic‐scale characterization of the microstructure and chemical composition near the grain boundaries of gadolinia‐doped ceria (GDC) thin films show the segregation of dopants and oxygen vacancies along the grain boundaries using the energy dispersive spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM‐EDS). Kelvin probe microscopy is employed to verify the charge distribution near grain boundaries and shows that the grain boundary is positively charged, indicating a high concentration of oxygen vacancies. AC impedance spectroscopy on polycrystalline GDC membranes with thin interfacial layers with different grain boundary densities at the cathodes demonstrated that the cells with higher grain boundary density result in lower electrode impedance and higher exchange current density. These experimental evidences clearly show that grain boundaries on the surface provide preferential reaction sites for facilitated oxygen incorporation into the GDC electrolyte.  相似文献

In many popular texture analysis methods, second or higher order statistics on the relation between pixel gray level values are stored in matrices. A high dimensional vector of predefined, nonadaptive features is then extracted from these matrices. Identifying a few consistently valuable features is important, as it improves classification reliability and enhances our understanding of the phenomena that we are modeling. Whatever sophisticated selection algorithm we use, there is a risk of selecting purely coincidental "good" feature sets, especially if we have a large number of features to choose from and the available data set is limited. In a unified approach to statistical texture feature extraction, we have used class distance and class difference matrices to obtain low dimensional adaptive feature vectors for texture classification. We have applied this approach to four relevant texture analysis methods. The new adaptive features outperformed the classical features when applied to the most difficult set of 45 Brodatz texture pairs. Class distance and difference matrices also clearly illustrated the difference in texture between cell nucleus images from two different prognostic classes of early ovarian cancer. For each of the texture analysis methods, one adaptive feature contained most of the discriminatory power of the method.  相似文献

In semiconductor laser diodes layers with high refractive index can act as parasitic waveguides and cause severe losses to the optical mode propagating in the longitudinal direction. For (Al,In)GaN laser diodes, the parasitic modes are typically caused by the SiC or GaN substrate or buffer layers, hence the name substrate modes. A set of four different experiments shows the effect of substrate modes in the near-field (the most direct evidence of substrate modes), as side lobes in far-field, oscillations of the optical gain spectra, and as dependency of threshold current on n-cladding thickness. We derive several basic properties of the substrate modes by simple estimates. For a quantitative analysis we employ a 2-D finite element electromagnetic simulation tool. We simulate periodic variations in the cavity gain spectrum that explain the measurements in terms of absolute value and oscillation amplitude. We show that it is necessary to include the refractive index dispersion in order to get the correct period of the gain oscillations. Furthermore, we use the simulations to optimize the laser diode design with respect to substrate mode losses within the constraints given, e.g., by growth conditions  相似文献

The measured equation of invariance (MEI) is a newly developed computational method which allows finite-difference (FD) or finite-element (FE) mesh to be terminated very closely to objects of interest. In this paper, the authors show how the MEI method may be applied to microstrip antennas and discontinuity problems. Stacking faults within 4H-SiC PiN diodes are known to be detrimental to device operation. Here, we present electroluminescence (EL) images of 4H-SiC PiN diodes providing evidence that electrically and optically stimulated Shockley stacking fault (SSF) propagation is a reversible process at temperatures as low as 210°C. Optical beam induced current (OBIC) images taken following complete optical stressing of a PiN diode and that lead to a small number of completely propagated SSFs provide evidence that such defects propagate across the n–/p+ interface and continue to grow throughout the p+ layer. These observations bring about questions regarding the validity of the currently accepted driving force mechanism for SSF propagation.  相似文献
