The prevalence of fluorosis is mainly due to the intake of large quantities of fluoride through water. It is necessary to determine the contribution of water used for drinking and food processing and other diet sources on daily fluoride intake for finding the ways to reduce the excess fluoride intake than the minimum safe level intake of 0.05 mg/kg/day. The main objectives of this study are to determine the quantitative impact of water through drinking and cooking of food and beverages on total fluoride intake as well as to estimate the contribution of commonly consumed diet sources on total fluoride intake. Contribution of water on daily fluoride intake and estimation of total fluoride intake through the diet sources were accomplished through analysis of fluoride in drinking water, solid and liquid food items, Infant formulae, tea and coffee infusions using fluoride ion selective electrode. Determination of incidence of fluorosis in different fluoride endemic areas in Dindigul District of Tamil Nadu, South India is achieved through clinical survey. The percentage of daily fluoride intake through water is significantly higher for infants than children, adults and old age groups of people. The percentile scores of fluoride intake through water from drinking and cooking increases with increase of water fluoride level. The rate of prevalence of fluorosis is higher in adolescent girls and females than adolescent boys and males residing in high fluoride endemic areas. More than 60% of the total fluoride intake per day derived from water used for drinking and food processing. Hence the people residing in the fluoride endemic areas in Dindigul District of Tamil Nadu, South India are advised to take serious concern about the fluoride level of water used for drinking and cooking to avoid further fluorosis risks. 相似文献

Dynamics of arsenic in agricultural soils irrigated with arsenic contaminated groundwater in Bangladesh 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Arsenic (As) concentrations in the soil layers of 12 rice fields located in four As affected areas and two unaffected areas in Bangladesh were monitored during 2003. In the unaffected areas, where irrigation water contained little As (<1 microg/L), As concentrations of rice field soils ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 mg/kg and did not vary significantly with either depth or sampling time throughout the irrigation period. In the As affected areas where the irrigation water contained elevated As (79 to 436 microg/L), As concentrations of rice field soils were much higher compared to those in the unaffected areas and varied significantly with both depth and sampling time. For the top 0 to 150 mm of the soil, the As concentration increased significantly at the end of the irrigation season (May-June 2003). About 71% of the As that is applied to the rice field with irrigation water accumulates in the top 0 to 75 mm soil layer by the end of the irrigation season. After the wet season during which the rice fields were inundated with flood/rain water, the As concentrations in the soil layer decreased significantly and were reduced to levels comparable to those found in soil samples collected at the beginning of the irrigation period. The long-term As accumulation in agricultural soil appears to be counteracted by biogeochemical pathways leading to As removal from soil. 相似文献

The modifications in microstructural, optical, and photoluminescence properties of the Lexan polycarbonate (bisphenol‐A‐polycarbonate) films exposed to different electron doses have been studied using UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained UV–vis spectroscopy results showed decrease in optical energy gap, optical activation energy, and increase in number of carbon atoms per cluster with increase in electron dose. The chemical changes in electron irradiated polymers due to chain scission and reconstruction have been observed from FTIR spectroscopy. The correlation of positron lifetime study with optical measurement is obtained, and electron irradiation‐induced microstructural modifications within the polymer is understood. SEM result shows the degradation of Lexan polymer after electron irradiation. The mechanical properties and average molecular weight of Lexan decrease after irradiation, whereas average number of chain scissions per original polymer molecule increases. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents multiobjective optimization of a typical 2-degree-of-freedom (DOF) parallel kinematic machine (PKM) tool that has only single DOF joints. Nondimensional indices, namely global stiffness index (GSI), global conditioning index (GCI), and workspace index, are considered as the objectives for optimization. The indices GSI and GCI depict the variation of stiffness and dexterity of PKM within the workspace. The leg length and distance between two rails on which actuators slide are treated as design variables as these greatly influence the characteristics of PKM. A multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGA) approach is implemented in MATLAB to find an efficient solution to this complex optimization problem. Fitness function includes inverse kinematics equations, Jacobian and stiffness matrices to compute and optimize the nondimensional indices. First, the optimal value of each index is obtained by single-objective GA. To further improve the results, a hybrid function PATTERNSEARCH is used. This helps to select appropriate boundary conditions for MOGA. To obtain the optimal values of all the three indices, a multiobjective GA is carried out. The results are compared with a conventional exhaustive search method of optimization. The obtained results show that the use of MOGA enhances the quality of the optimization outcome. Secondly, a prototype has been designed and developed with the optimal dimensions. The actual workspace of the PKM and influence of leg collision on the workspace are studied. Finally, a preliminary experimentation was carried out. A comparison between PKM and the three-axis serial kinematic machine tool is presented. 相似文献

Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is a valuable technique for characterization of biological samples, providing a detailed fingerprint of the major chemical constituents. However, water vapor and CO(2) in the beam path often cause interferences in the spectra, which can hamper the data analysis and interpretation of results. In this paper we present a new method for removal of the spectral contributions due to atmospheric water and CO(2) from attenuated total reflection (ATR)-FT-IR spectra. In the IR spectrum, four separate wavenumber regions were defined, each containing an absorption band from either water vapor or CO(2). From two calibration data sets, gas model spectra were estimated in each of the four spectral regions, and these model spectra were applied for correction of gas absorptions in two independent test sets (spectra of aqueous solutions and a yeast biofilm (C. albicans) growing on an ATR crystal, respectively). The amounts of the atmospheric gases as expressed by the model spectra were estimated by regression, using second-derivative transformed spectra, and the estimated gas spectra could subsequently be subtracted from the sample spectra. For spectra of the growing yeast biofilm, the gas correction revealed otherwise hidden variations of relevance for modeling the growth dynamics. As the presented method improved the interpretation of the principle component analysis (PCA) models, it has proven to be a valuable tool for filtering atmospheric variation in ATR-FT-IR spectra. 相似文献

Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a widely accepted synthetic biodegradable polymer for tissue engineering, however its use in hard tissue engineering is limited because of its inadequate mechanical strength and low bioactivity. In this study, we used halloysite nanoclay (NC) as an inorganic filler material to prepare PCL/NC fibrous scaffolds via electrospinning technique after intercalating NC within PCL by solution intercalation method. The obtained nanofibrous mat was found to be mechanically superior to PCL fibrous scaffolds. These scaffolds allowed greater protein adsorption and enhanced mineralization when incubated in simulated body fluid. Moreover, our results indicated that human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) seeded on these scaffolds were viable and could proliferate faster than in PCL scaffolds as confirmed by fluorescence and scanning electron microscopic observations. Further, osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs on nanoclay embedded scaffolds was demonstrated by an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity when compared to PCL scaffold without nanoclay. All of these results suggest the potential of PCL/NC scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. 相似文献

The recent advancements in the field of wireless communications makes the mobile devices to communicate with each other in a self organized manner without relying on stable infrastructure. It requires cooperation between the mobile devices in order to find routes between them when the nodes are not in the communication range of each other. The misbehaving node comes into existence due to scarcely available resources such as battery, bandwidth and computational power. When the nodes collude to misbehave then it further makes the routing process difficult due to frequent network partitioning and it also degrades the overall network throughput. This paper proposes a Collaborative Polling based Routing Security Scheme to detect and isolate the colluding misbehaving nodes in mobile ad hoc networks. The proposed system employs a timeout approach to detect the active neighbors in the neighborhood before monitoring the transmissions which involves it. It ensures that the false detection of a good node as a bad one has been greatly reduced which in turn decreases the send buffer drop because of the availability of alternate routes. The simulation result shows that the measured parameters such as packet drop ratio and malicious drop has been reduced due to the efficient detection and isolation of misbehaving nodes. In this paper it has been shown that employing an underlap channel created by varying the lateral doping straggle in dopant-segregated Schottky barrier SOI MOSFET not only improves the scalability but also suppresses the self-heating effect of this device. Although in strong inversion region the reduced effective gate voltage due to voltage drop across the underlap lengths reduces the drive current, in weak/moderate inversion region defined at ID=5 μA/μm and VDS=0.5 V the analog figures of merit such as transconductance, transconductance generation factor and intrinsic gain of the proposed underlap device are improved by 15%, 35% and 20%, respectively over the conventional overlap channel structure. In addition to this, at VDD=0.5 V the gain-bandwidth product in a common-source amplifier based on proposed underlap device is improved by ~20% over an amplifier based on the conventional overlap channel device. The mixed-mode device/circuit simulation results of CMOS inverter, NAND and the NOR gates based on these devices also show that at VDD=0.5 V the switching energy, static power dissipation and the propagation delay in the case of proposed underlap device are reduced by ~10%, ~35% and ~25%, respectively, over the conventional overlap device. Thus, significant improvement in analog figures of merit and the reduction in digital design metrics at lower supply voltage show the suitability of the proposed underlap device for low-power mixed-signal circuits. 相似文献

Improving the conductivity of electrospinning solutions is often achieved by adding small amounts of conductive additives. HMIMCl, a room temperature ionic liquid, and TEBAC, a quaternary ammonium salt, were added to polylactic acid in chloroform and their effects on solution properties, electrospinning, and fiber properties were investigated. Both additives increased the conductivity which decreased the fiber diameter, but differences were observed on the fiber dispersity and fiber morphology. The conductive solutions caused fiber backbuilding with aggregation and fiber fusion. Reasons for the differences in fiber diameter and fiber morphology are discussed.

The prevalence of fluorosis is mainly due to the consumption of more fluoride through drinking water. It is necessary to find out the fluoride endemic areas to adopt remedial measures to the people on the risk of fluorosis. The objectives of this study are to estimate the fluoride exposure through drinking water from people of different age group and to elucidate the fluoride endemic areas through mapping. Assessment of fluoride exposure was achieved through the estimation fluoride level in drinking water using fluoride ion selective electrode method. Google earth and isopleth technique were used for mapping of fluoride endemic areas. From the study it was observed that Nilakottai block of Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu is highly fluoride endemic. About 88% of the villages in this block have fluoride level more than the prescribed permissible limit in drinking water. Exposure of fluoride among different age groups was calculated in this block, which comprises 32 villages. The maximum estimated exposure doses were 0.19 mg/kg/day for infants, 0.17 mg/kg/day for children and 0.10 mg/kg/day for adults. When compared with adequate intake of minimal safe level exposure dose of 0.01 mg/kg/day for infants and 0.05 mg/kg/day for other age groups, a health risk due to fluorosis to the people in Nilakottai block has become evident. From the results, the people in Nilakottai block are advised to consume drinking water with fluoride level less than 1 mg/l. It has been recommended to the government authorities to take serious steps to supply drinking water with low fluoride concern for the fluorosis affected villages. 相似文献
