Long-Evans rats with electrolytic hippocampal ablations exhibited chronic impairment in performance on a spatial delayed nonmatching-to-sample task in the arms of a T-maze. The same rats exhibited only mild deficits, which disappeared with practice, in dispositional memory-dependent discrimination in the stem. Both types of discrimination were learned rapidly preoperatively with no marked positive or negative interaction between types of discrimination. The present results suggest that hippocampal lesions in rats have far more serious consequences on the performance of representational memory-dependent tasks than similar lesions in monkeys. In agreement with our past studies, the present experiment demonstrated that dispositional and representational memory systems in rodents have at least partially distinct anatomical substrates in brain. The problem of reconstructing digital signals which have been passed through a dispersive channel and corrupted with additive noise is discussed. The problems encountered by linear equalizers under adverse conditions on the signal-to-noise ratio and channel phase are described. By considering the equalization problem as a geometric classification problem the authors demonstrate how these difficulties can be overcome by utilizing nonlinear classifiers as channel equalizers. The manner in which neural networks can be utilized as adaptive channel equalizers is described, and simulation results which suggest that the neural network equalizers offer a performance which exceeds that of the linear structures, particularly in the high-noise environment, are presented  相似文献

The formation of a porous polymer monolith (PPM) is influenced by the physico-chemical properties of the wall surface of its container. This influence can have a dramatic effect on the resulting monolith morphology depending on the nature and composition of the wall. Indeed, a dense polymer layer or “sheath”, distinct from the bulk porous material, has been observed at the wall surface of capillaries, and thus a study was undertaken to explore the dependence of this layer on the hydrophobicity of the surface. A range of silanizing reagents were used to modify the surface of the fused silica capillary, including aminopropyl, trimethylsilyl, octadecyl and perfluorooctyl functionalities. Crosslinked butyl acrylate-based PPM was formed in the modified capillaries and extruded. SEM images of the monoliths were used to examine the sheath morphology and thickness, which are discussed with respect to surface hydrophobicity.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new theory of the relationship between the sentence processing mechanism and the available computational resources. This theory--the Syntactic Prediction Locality Theory (SPLT)--has two components: an integration cost component and a component for the memory cost associated with keeping track of obligatory syntactic requirements. Memory cost is hypothesized to be quantified in terms of the number of syntactic categories that are necessary to complete the current input string as a grammatical sentence. Furthermore, in accordance with results from the working memory literature both memory cost and integration cost are hypothesized to be heavily influenced by locality (1) the longer a predicted category must be kept in memory before the prediction is satisfied, the greater is the cost for maintaining that prediction; and (2) the greater the distance between an incoming word and the most local head or dependent to which it attaches, the greater the integration cost. The SPLT is shown to explain a wide range of processing complexity phenomena not previously accounted for under a single theory, including (1) the lower complexity of subject-extracted relative clauses compared to object-extracted relative clauses, (2) numerous processing overload effects across languages, including the unacceptability of multiply center-embedded structures, (3) the lower complexity of cross-serial dependencies relative to center-embedded dependencies, (4) heaviness effects, such that sentences are easier to understand when larger phrases are placed later and (5) numerous ambiguity effects, such as those which have been argued to be evidence for the Active Filler Hypothesis.  相似文献

The flow of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (unfilled and glass fiber filled) was studied using a capillary rheometer and an instrumented injection molding machine. Despite different thermal histories, the techniques gave similar results. From 330 to 350°C, viscosity was independent of temperature. At 340°C, where most measurements were carried out, pronounced shear-thinning occurred and the shear flow curves were nonlinear, the power law exponent decreasing from 0.51 at a shear rate of 10 s−1 to 0.35 at 104 s−1. A previously reported model was used to derive elongational flow curves from die entry pressure data. Because of the nonlinearity of the flow curves, quadratic log-stress vs. log-strain rate plots were needed to model behavior over the strain rate region studied. The elongational flow curves were similar in shape to the shear flow curves, with an effective Trouton ratio of 30. Despite orientation and structure present in the melt, the extensional viscosities and Trouton ratios were within the range found with normal thermoplastic melts. The results suggest that extensional flow may be inhomogeneous, the flowing units possibly being partially ordered domains.  相似文献

A filamentous, gram-negative, motile bacterium with a single polar sheathed flagellum was isolated from gallbladders of hamsters with cholangiofibrosis and centrilobular pancreatitis. Bacteria grew under microaerophilic conditions at 37 and 42 degrees C, were oxidase, catalase, arginine aminopeptidase, and L-arginine arylamidase positive, reduced nitrate to nitrite, were resistant to cephalothin, and exhibited intermediate susceptibility to nalidixic acid. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the bacterium was a novel member of the Helicobacter genus, most closely related to Helicobacter pametensis. We propose to name this bacterium Helicobacter cholecystus. In epidemiologic studies, isolation of H. cholecystus correlated strongly with the presence of cholangiofibrosis and centrilobular pancreatitis; however, further studies are needed to define the role of this bacterium in pathogenesis.  相似文献

Ti–B–N films with a gradient in the chemical composition were deposited onto austenitic stainless steel sheets by means of unbalanced DC magnetron co-sputtering using a segmented TiN\Tib2 target. Film microstructure was characterized by means of electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXRD). The mechanical properties of the coatings were measured using a depth-sensing nanoindenter. The composition of the films was found to lie close to the quasi-binary section TiN–TiB2 within the ternary system Ti–B–N. The grain size determined from TEM investigations range between 3 and 5 nm. Coatings consisted of a nanocrystalline fcc TiN phase (with boron atoms and oxygen impurities dissolved), and TiB2, TiB and B2O3. Microstructure as well as chemical composition of the films were not influenced significantly by the deposition parameters used in this investigation. Contrary, the mechanical properties were strongly influenced varying the ion bombardment. Hardness values exceeding 50 GPa and elastic moduli close to 500 GPa were obtained.  相似文献
