A transparent cornea is paramount for vision. Corneal opacity is one of the leading causes of blindness. Although conventional corneal transplantation has been successful in recovering patients’ vision, the outcomes are challenged by a global lack of donor tissue availability. Bioengineered corneal tissues are gaining momentum as a new source for corneal wound healing and scar management. Extracellular matrix (ECM)-scaffold-based engineering offers a new perspective on corneal regenerative medicine. Ultrathin stromal laminar tissues obtained from lenticule-based refractive correction procedures, such as SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), are an accessible and novel source of collagen-rich ECM scaffolds with high mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and transparency. After customization (including decellularization), these lenticules can serve as an acellular scaffold niche to repopulate cells, including stromal keratocytes and stem cells, with functional phenotypes. The intrastromal transplantation of these cell/tissue composites can regenerate native-like corneal stromal tissue and restore corneal transparency. This review highlights the current status of ECM-scaffold-based engineering with cells, along with the development of drug and growth factor delivery systems, and elucidates the potential uses of stromal lenticule scaffolds in regenerative therapeutics. 相似文献

Gary Demos discovered computer graphics while hearing a computer-generated film presentation at CalTech in 1970 by John Whitney
Sr. Gary then began working under the direction of Ivan Sutherland in Utah to develop early computer graphics hardware and
software. In 1974 Gary and John Whitney Jr. started the “Motion Picture Project” at Information International to produce computer
generated simulated scenes for movies (Futureworld, Looker, and Tron) and commercials. These early computer-generated visuals
were quite challenging given the level of software and hardware technology available in the 1970’s. In 1981 Gary and John
left Information International to form Digital Productions, where they produced effects for the movies Last Starfighter and
“2010”, which were both released in 1984. Digital Productions used the Cray XMP computer, together with the Digital Film Printer
that they had developed at Information International. Following a hostile takeover by Omibus of Digital Productions in 1986,
Whitney/Demos Productions was formed, using a Thinking Machine parallel computer. This paper describes the technical challenges

Subset regression procedures have been shown to provide better overall performance than stepwise regression procedures. However, due to the combinatorial nature of evaluating each potential subset, subset regression techniques are costly to use. To resolve this difficulty, the use of a simple genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to reduce the number of subsets which must be evaluated. Any of a number of popular criteria, including Mallows' Cp, MSE, R2, AIC, etc., can be used to drive the search strategy associated with the use of the GA. The leaf area index (LAI) product from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is important for monitoring and modelling global change and terrestrial dynamics at many scales. The algorithm relies on spectral reflectances and a six biome land cover classification. Evaluation of the specific behaviour and performance of the product for regions of the globe such as Australia are needed to assist with product refinement and validation. We made an assessment of Collection 4 of the MODIS LAI product using four approaches: (a) assessment against a continental scale Structural Classification of Australian Vegetation (SCAV); (b) assessment against a continental scale land use classification (LUC); (c) assessment against historical field-based measurement of LAI collected prior to the Terra Mission; and (d) direct comparison of MODIS LAI with coincident field measurements of LAI, mostly from hemispherical photography. The MODIS LAI product produced a wide variety of geographically and structurally specific temporal response profiles between different classes and even for sub-groups within classes of the SCAV. Historical and concurrent field measurements indicated that MODIS LAI was giving reasonable estimates for LAI for most cover types and land use types, but that major overestimation of LAI occurs in some eastern Australian open forests and woodlands. The six biome structural land cover classification showed some significant deviations in class allocation compared to the SCAV particularly where grasslands are allocated to shrubland, savanna woodlands are allocated to shrubland, savanna and broadleaf forest, and open forests are allocated to savanna and broadleaf forest. The land cover and LAI products could benefit from some additional examination of Australian data addressing the structural representation of Eucalypt canopies in the “space of canopy realisation” for savanna and broadleaf forest classes. 相似文献

Abstract: This paper presents a case study of the use of a repeated single‐criterion card sort with an unusually large, diverse participant group. The study, whose goal was to elicit novice programmers' knowledge of programming concepts, involved over 20 researchers from four continents and 276 participants drawn from 20 different institutions. In this paper we present the design of the study and the unexpected result that there were few discernible systematic differences in the population. This paper proposes a unique oscillator-based robot controller with learning abilities to effectively guide a team of robots
operating in uncertain environments. To verify this, we designed four separate controllers and compared their performance
in a series of tests in several different environments. The experiments used a team of three robots to explore arenas with
variable lighting and different obstacle patterns, with a goal of having the team as a whole absorb as much light as possible.
The four controllers were: a reactive controller, an oscillator with fixed parameters, an oscillator whose parameters changed
based on the pattern of sensor information received, and an oscillator-based controller that used reinforcement learning.
Experiments confirmed that the proposed method outperforms the others in all environments tested.

Unlike humans, some animals have evolved a physiological ability to deposit porphyrins, which are pigments produced during heme synthesis in cells, in the skin and associated integument such as hair. Given the inert nature and easiness of collection of hair, animals that present porphyrin-based pigmentation constitute unique models for porphyrin analysis in biological samples. Here we present the development of a simple, rapid, and efficient analytical method for four natural porphyrins (uroporphyrin I, coproporphyrin I, coproporphyrin III and protoporphyrin IX) in the Southern flying squirrel Glaucomys volans, a mammal with hair that fluoresces and that we suspected has porphyrin-based pigmentation. The method is based on capillary liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (CLC-MS), after an extraction procedure with formic acid and acetonitrile. The resulting limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.006–0.199 and 0.021–0.665 µg mL−1, respectively. This approach enabled us to quantify porphyrins in flying squirrel hairs at concentrations of 3.6–353.2 µg g−1 with 86.4–98.6% extraction yields. This method provides higher simplicity, precision, selectivity, and sensitivity than other methods used to date, presenting the potential to become the standard technique for porphyrin analysis. 相似文献

The segmentation of images into meaningful and homogenous regions is a key method for image analysis within applications such as content based retrieval. The watershed transform is a well established tool for the segmentation of images. However, watershed segmentation is often not effective for textured image regions that are perceptually homogeneous. In order to segment such regions properly, the concept of the "texture gradient" is introduced. Texture information and its gradient are extracted using a novel nondecimated form of a complex wavelet transform. A novel marker location algorithm is subsequently used to locate significant homogeneous textured or non textured regions. A marker driven watershed transform is then used to segment the identified regions properly. The combined algorithm produces effective texture and intensity based segmentation for application to content based image retrieval. 相似文献
